[Mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome in Austria. Four cases with one fatal outcome. 2. Pathological findings].

First pathoanatomic case report of mucocutaneous lymph-node syndrome (MCLS) from Austria: A 3 1/2 year old boy was admitted to the Pediatric Department with a six day history of fever and bilateral conjunctivitis. He showed a maculous exanthema, red and fissuring lips, reddened tonsils and a coated tongue. Submandibular lymph nodes were swollen (1 cm diameter); ESR 128/138; peripheral leukocytosis 17 x 10(9)/l. On the tenth day of illness membranous desquamation from the fingertips and a strawberry tongue was observed. The ECG showed a myocardial infarction in the apical portion of the left ve

Aneurysmal coronary artery disease. Atherosclerotic coronary artery ectasia or adult mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki's disease)?

A 46-year-old white man presented with a history of multiple myocardial infarctions since the age of 32. Coronary angiography demonstrated severe aneurysmal coronary artery disease. Four-vessel coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) using bilateral internal mammary arteries and the left radial artery was successfully performed. The differential diagnosis of early onset adult aneurysmal coronary artery disease is discussed, with emphasis on Kawasaki's disease and atherosclerotic coronary artery ectasia. When CABG is indicated, total arterial revascularization should be attempted.

Sudden death in an adolescent four years after recovery from mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease).

A case is presented of sudden death during physical activity in a 15-year-old boy with clinically inactive mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease). At autopsy, the coronary arteries were involved by multiple aneurysms and obstructive thrombi, and the left ventricular myocardium was extensively scarred. Although Kawasaki disease most commonly occurs in infants and young children, it may be a cause of sudden death in adolescents.

Infantile periarteritis nodosa or mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome. A report on four cases and diagnostic considerations.

Coronary artery aneurysm in childhood is a rare disease and has in most cases been ascribed to infantile periarteritis nodosa (IPN). In recent years a mucocutaneous lymph node syndrom (MLNS) has been found almost exclusively in Japan first described by Kawasaki 1967; this disease frequently involves the coronary arteries and myocardium. Four cases with coronary aneurysms are presented from Sweden and seem to be first described from Scandinavia. Three of these patients died a sudden death with cardiac arrest. Since MLNS and IPN have identical clinical and pathological features, we suggest that

Morphological observations on the vasculitis in the mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome. A skin biopsy study of 27 patients.

Twenty-seven skin biopsies were obtained from the exanthemata of patients in the acute stage of the mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (MCLS). The three vascular systems of different caliber size--the intrapapillary capillary loops (ICL), the superficial arteriolar or venular plexus (SAP, SVP) and the small subcutaneous vessels--were examined to investigate the characteristics of the vasculitis in MCLS and differentiate it from infantile polyarteritis nodosa (IPN). Significant papillary edema and dilatation of ICL, SAP and SVP were observed on the 4th day after the onset of the illness, and the

The value of angiography in the follow-up of coronary involvement in mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease).

From September 1976 to August 1988, 205 patients with mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease) were evaluated; 29 were suspected of having coronary artery abnormalities because of either abnormalities on echocardiography (n = 21), congestive heart failure (n = 3), prolonged fever (n = 3) or cardiac arrest (n = 2). All 29 underwent cardiac catheterization and 22 were found to have coronary artery abnormalities. An additional 4 patients were diagnosed solely by autopsy; therefore, 26 patients (12%) in this series had coronary artery abnormalities. The clearance of contrast medium fro

Mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki syndrome) mimicking a suppurative parapharyngeal space infection. Case report and review of the literature.

A six-year-old girl presented with fever, trismus and a very tender, enlarged submandibular mass. CT-scanning showed a right parapharyngeal mass and enlarged cervical nodes in the posterior triangle. Surgical exploration of the area failed to reveal an abscess. Subsequently the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of Kawasaki syndrome were met. This unusual presentation is compared with previously reported cases in the literature.

[Acute mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki-syndrome) with fatal periarteritis nodosa of the coronary arteries. Another case from Europe].

Case report of a 1 8/12-year-old boy suffering from an acute febrile disease with phlegmonous cervical lymphadenopathy, skin rash and other septic symptoms. Bacterial cultures were sterile, and antibiotics had no effect, whereas prednisone made an immediate improvement. On the 23rd day of illness the patient died unexpectedly. Autopsy revealed a ruptured coronary aneurysm due to periarteritis nodosa. This curious disease of yet unknown cause is quite frequent in Japan, but very rare in Europe.

Acute febrile mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease) in adults: case report and review of the literature.

A 25-year-old female meeting all six criteria for Kawasaki disease is reported. A total of 22 reported cases of adult Kawasaki disease, including the present case, are reviewed. In adult Kawasaki disease, arthralgia, gastrointestinal complications and hepatic dysfunction are seen more frequently than in childhood cases. Cardiac complications are rarely seen in adult Kawasaki disease. Two cases have been positive for anti-nuclear antibody (ANA). The present patient had increased levels of serum IgE and was positive for ANA, suggesting involvement of an immune mechanism. Adult Kawasaki disease i

Mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki dIsease) in Israel. A review of 13 cases: is pseudomonas infection responsible?

In this report the clinical, laboratory and histopathological findings of 13 children with Mucocutaneous Lymph Node Syndrome (Kawasaki disease; MCLS) are reviewed. This is the first report of a series with a description of the clinical findings as well as pathological findings in patients from Israel. Pseudomonas infection appeared to be the underlying cause of both the clinical symptoms and the pathological changes of some (or all) cases of Kawasaki disease.

The anaesthetic management of a case of Kawasaki's disease (mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome) and Beckwith-Weidemann syndrome presenting with a bleeding tongue.

An unusual case of a 13-month-old child with Kawasaki's disease and the Beckwith-Weidemann syndrome is presented. The child, while anticoagulated with warfarin and aspirin to prevent extension of a coronary artery thrombus, fell and lacerated the tongue resulting in haemorrhage and significant swelling. The ongoing haemorrhage, combined with difficulty in securing venous access resulted in the child becoming shocked. Surgical intervention was required to stem the haemorrhage. The anaesthetic management of a shocked child with a coronary artery aneurysm and thrombosis, a potentially difficult a

Intracytoplasmic inclusions in urinary sediment cells from a patient with mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease). A case report.

An intracytoplasmic inclusion seen in cells in the urinary sediments of a patient with the mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease) is described. Cytochemical features suggested that the inclusion-bearing cells may be derived from mononucleated phagocytic cells. The presence of these cells may be related to the acute febrile phase of the disease.

[Periarteriitis nodosa in children and mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome as causes of multifocal convulsions (propulsive petit-mal) (author's transl)].

On an infant with the classical signs of Kawasaki-disease (MLNS), in whom after a few days began to show distal demarcations on all four extremities due to arterial malperfusion. Parts of these extremities had to be resected. Histologic evaluation showed an infantile type of periarteriitis nodosa. Later on the child developed multifocal convulsions. The similarities of MLNS and IPN are discussed as well as cerebral vasculitis.

Cardiac and coronary arterial involvement in infants and children from New England with mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease). Angiocardiographic-echocardiographic correlations.

Forty-four patients, aged 6 months to 11 years, meeting the clinical criteria for mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki disease) were studied from March 1980 to March 1981. A protocol was designed for evaluation of cardiac involvement including electrocardiogram, chest X-ray film, cardiac enzyme determinations and M mode and two dimensional echocardiograms. Aspirin was given during the acute febrile period as an anti-inflammatory agent in a dosage of 100 mg/kg per day; followed by 30 mg/kg per day for 10 weeks or longer if platelet counts were elevated. Angiocardiography was performed in
