Is the Cognitive Ability of Fawn-Footed Mosaic-Tailed Rat Melomys cervinipes Offspring Related to Mothers' Care or Cognitive Abilities?

The cognitive abilities of many non-human animals have been investigated in recent years; however, outside of laboratory rodent strains, it is largely unknown how direct and indirect genetic factors influence the development of cognition. In a previous study, we found no impact of maternal genetic or non-genetic effects on problem solving in the fawn-footed mosaic-tailed rat Melomys cervinipes. However, cognition is multifaceted, and different forms of cognition may not all be influenced by the same factors. Therefore, we investigated whether maternal genetic and non-genetic effects affected t

Mite composition in nests of the Japanese wood mouse, Apodemus speciosus (Rodentia: Muridae).

Acari is a diverse group of arthropods that include well-known parasites of animals. Rodents, particularly, serve as common hosts of mites and ticks, transmitting pathogens to domestic animals and humans. Understanding the ecological dynamics between parasites and rodent hosts is crucial for ecosystem management. Due to limited knowledge about the life history of ectoparasites in wild mouse nests, we collected four nests of Apodemus speciosus, the most common rodent species in the wild areas of Japan, along with soil samples near the nests to study arthropod communities. Mites overwhelmingly p

Cryptic species Hydatigera kamiyai and other taeniid metacestodes in the populations of small mammals in Serbia.

BACKGROUND: Hydatigera (Cestoda: Taeniidae) is a recently resurrected genus with the description of a new species, Hydatigera kamiyai, a cryptic entity within the Hydatigera taeniaeformis species complex. Rodents are intermediate hosts and correct taxonomic identification of H. taeniaeformis sensu lato (s.l.) species is difficult without the use of molecular methods. The aim of this study was to identify and explore the genetic diversity of Hydatigera and other taeniid species. METHODS: Ten different small mammals species (856 individuals) (Rattus rattus, three Apodemus, three Arvicolinae and

[The infection status of Leptospira in rodents on the Heixiazi island of Heilongjiang province, China,in 2011].

OBJECTIVE: To study the infection status of Leptospira in rodents on Heixiazi island Heilongjiang province in 2011. METHODS: A total of 356 rodents were captured by night trap on the Heixiazi island from April to October 2011. The kidney tissue samples were collected by asepsis operation and the genomic DNA were extracted from them. Leptospira strains were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction(PCR) amplification of the 482 bp 23 S rDNA gene. Fifteen PCR products selected by the month were purified and sequenced by the methods of Sanger dideoxy, the sequences then compared with other Leptospi

Immunization with Pneumocystis Cross-Reactive Antigen 1 (Pca1) Protects Mice against Pneumocystis Pneumonia and Generates Antibody to Pneumocystis jirovecii.

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) is a life-threatening infection that affects immunocompromised individuals. Nearly half of all PcP cases occur in those prescribed effective chemoprophylaxis, suggesting that additional preventive methods are needed. To this end, we have identified a unique mouse Pneumocystis surface protein, designated Pneumocystis cross-reactive antigen 1 (Pca1), as a potential vaccine candidate. Mice were immunized with a recombinant fusion protein containing Pca1. Subsequently, CD4+ T cells were depleted, and the mice were exposed to Pneumocystis murina Pca1 immunization comple

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in wild marsupials and rodents from the Atlantic forest of Pernambuco state, northeastern region, Brazil.

Felids are important in the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii because they are the only hosts that can excrete the environmentally resistant oocysts in their feces. Cats acquire T. gondii infection in nature by ingesting tissues of small mammals and birds. Serum samples of 223 feral marsupials and 174 feral rodents captured in 7 segments of the Atlantic Forest of the State of Pernambuco, northeastern region of Brazil, and in urban areas of the municipality of Recife were examined for antibodies to T. gondii by the modified agglutination test (MAT). Antibodies (MAT ≥ 25) were found in 6.7% (15

Hypothermia versus torpor in response to cold stress in the native Australian mouse Pseudomys hermannsburgensis and the introduced house mouse Mus musculus.

This study compared torpor as a response to food deprivation and low ambient temperature for the introduced house mouse (Mus musculus) and the Australian endemic sandy inland mouse (Pseudomys hermannsburgensis). The house mouse (mass 13.0+/-0.48 g) had a normothermic body temperature of 34.0+/-0.20 degrees C at ambient temperatures from 5 degrees C to 30 degrees C and a basal metabolic rate at 30 degrees C of 2.29+/-0.07 mL O2 g(-1) h(-1). It used torpor with spontaneous arousal at low ambient temperatures; body temperature during torpor was 20.5+/-3.30 degrees C at 15 degrees C. The sandy inl

Learning and laterality in wild-caught Namaqua rock mice (Micaelamys namaquensis).

Individuals often exhibit differences in cognition and/or preferences for one side over the other. Such differences have been attributed to the mating system and lateralization of the brain hemispheres that can differ between the sexes, respectively. Despite the hypothesized significant effects on fitness, only a limited number of rodent studies addresses sex differences in laterality and most focus on laboratory rodents. Here we examined whether wild-caught Namaqua rock mice (Micaelamys namaquensis), a rodent widespread in sub-Saharan Africa, exhibit sex differences in learning and laterality

Ecology of Lassa Virus.

Individuals living in endemic hotspots of Lassa fever have recurrent exposure to Lassa virus (LASV) via spillover from the primary host reservoir Mastomys natalensis. Despite M. natalensis being broadly distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, Lassa fever is only found in West Africa. In recent years, new LASV reservoirs have been identified. Erudition of rodent habitats, reproduction and fecundity, movement patterns, and spatial preferences are essential to institute preventative measures against Lassa fever. Evolutionary insights have also added to our knowledge of closely related mammarenavir

A remarkable rodent: Regeneration and reproduction in spiny mice (Acomys).

Although certain organisms are chosen and employed to better understand a specific problem in biology (so-called model organisms), sometimes an animal model reveals its' biomedical importance by happenstance. In many ways, the advent of spiny mice (Acomys) as an emerging model to study regeneration and menstruation stands as a case study in scientific pseudoserendipity (Diaz de Chumaceiro, 1995). As we recount in this chapter, the discovery of these phenotypes, while not entirely accidental, was nonetheless unexpected. In addition to recounting how we uncovered these unusual mammalian traits,

Molecular typing of Leptospira spp. strains isolated from field mice confirms a link to human leptospirosis.

In recent years, human leptospirosis has been reported in Jinping and Liping counties, Guizhou province, but the leptospires have never been isolated. To track the source of infection and understand the aetiological characteristics, we performed surveillance for field mice carriage of leptospirosis in 2011. Four strains of leptospire were isolated from Apodemus agrarius. PCR confirmed the four isolates as pathogenic. Multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) showed that the four strains were closely related to serovar Lai strain 56601 belonging to serogroup Icterohaemorrhagi

Two new species of Syphacia (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) in endemic murid rodents from Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Two new species of Syphacia (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) are described from endemic murids of Sulawesi, Indonesia: Syphacia (Syphacia) taeromyos sp. n. and S. (S.) paruromyos sp. n. parasitic in the caecum of Taeromys celebensis and Paruromys dominator, respectively. They are readily distinguished from all of the congeners recorded from Indonesia-Australian regions by having a round cephalic plate, vesicular lateral alae in the male, posteriorly positioned excretory pore in the male, and/or lacking cervical alae. Syphacia (S.) paruromyos differs from S. (S.) taeromyos by having a whip-like tail appen

Lassa virus infection in Nigeria: clinical perspective overview.

Lassa fever is a severe, often fatal, hemorrhagic fever caused by Lassa virus, an Arenavirus that can be transmitted to humans from asymptomatically infected multimammate rats. The speculation is that Lassa viral infection may affect between 2 to 3 million people each year in certain portions of the West African region, causing a mortality of about 10000 during the same period. Lassa fever is one of the endemic zoonosis in Nigeria with a high probability for nosocomial transmission due to several health care sector challenges. Although treatment is available for Lassa fever, early diagnosis is

Field rats form a major infection source of leptospirosis in and around Madurai, India.

AIMS: To determine the seroprevalence of leptospires and to isolate Leptospira spp. from field rats and bandicoots in and around Madurai. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen rats and five bandicoots were trapped alive from fields in and around Madurai. Blood samples were tested for anti-leptospiral antibodies by microscopic agglutination test while the urine and kidney samples were used for isolation of leptospires. The isolated leptospires were tested for pathogenic status (13 degrees C test and PCR) followed by serological and genetic characterization. RESULTS: Serology revealed the presence o

Mammalian organ regeneration in spiny mice.

Fibrosis-driven solid organ failure is a major world-wide health burden with few therapeutic options. Spiny mice (genus: Acomys) are terrestrial mammals that regenerate severe skin wounds without fibrotic scars to evade predators. Recent studies have shown that spiny mice also regenerate acute ischemic and traumatic injuries to kidney, heart, spinal cord, and skeletal muscle. A common feature of this evolved wound healing response is a lack of formation of fibrotic scar tissue that degrades organ function, inhibits regeneration, and leads to organ failure. Complex tissue regeneration is an ext

Comparative Genomic Characterization of the Multimammate Mouse Mastomys coucha.

Mastomys are the most widespread African rodent and carriers of various diseases such as the plague or Lassa virus. In addition, mastomys have rapidly gained a large number of mammary glands. Here, we generated a genome, variome, and transcriptomes for Mastomys coucha. As mastomys diverged at similar times from mouse and rat, we demonstrate their utility as a comparative genomic tool for these commonly used animal models. Furthermore, we identified over 500 mastomys accelerated regions, often residing near important mammary developmental genes or within their exons leading to protein sequence

Description of a Murine Model of Pneumocystis Pneumonia.

Pneumocystis pneumonia is a serious lung infection caused by an original ubiquitous fungus with opportunistic behavior, referred to as Pneumocystis jirovecii. P. jirovecii is the second most common fungal agent among invasive fungal infections after Candida spp. Unfortunately, there is still an inability to culture P. jirovecii in vitro, and so a great impairment to improve knowledge on the pathogenesis of Pneumocystis pneumonia. In this context, animal models have a high value to address complex interplay between Pneumocystis and the components of the host immune system. Here, we propose a pr
