Cross-resistance, genetics, and realized heritability of resistance to fipronil in the house fly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae): a potential vector for disease transmission.

Houseflies, Musca domestica (L.), are ubiquitous pests that have the potential to spread a variety of pathogens to humans, poultries, and dairies. Pesticides are commonly used for the management of this pest. Fipronil is a GABA-gated chloride channel-inhibiting insecticide that has been commonly used for the management of different pests including M. domestica throughout the world. Many pests have developed resistance to this insecticide. A field-collected strain of M. domestica was selected with fipronil for continuous 11 generations to assess the cross-resistance, genetics, and realized heri

Detection of Besnoitia besnoiti DNA by real-time PCR in individuals or in pools of Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae), reveals parasite circulation on cattle farms.

Bovine besnoitiosis is an emerging disease in Europe, transmitted mechanically by the stable fly Stomoxys calcitrans. Infected cattle harbouring large quantities of parasitic cysts in their dermis are considered super-spreaders. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that Besnoitia besnoiti DNA can be detected in stable flies captured in the immediate vicinity of these hosts. In this case, we wanted to assess how far away from the super-spreaders we could capture infected Stomoxys flies. On two cattle farms affected by besnoitiosis in the south of France, super-spreaders were identifie

Insecticidal and Synergistic Potential of Three Monoterpenoids against the Yellow Fever Mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), and the House Fly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

As resistance to the limited number of insecticides available for medical and veterinary pests becomes more widespread, there is an urgent need for new insecticides and synergists on the market. To address this need, we conducted a study to assess the toxicity of three monoterpenoids-carvone, menthone, and fenchone-in comparison to permethrin and methomyl against adults of two common pests: the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) and the house fly (Musca domestica). We also examined the potential for these monoterpenoids to enhance the effectiveness of permethrin and methomyl when used toget

Field trials of fatty acids and geraniol applied to cattle for suppression of horn flies, Haematobia irritans (Diptera: Muscidae), with observations on fly defensive behaviors.

Adult horn fly populations were tracked on cattle for 2-week periods before, during and after multiple treatments (every 3-4days) with two repellents in a mineral oil carrier. Cattle were sprayed four times in a two-week period either with 2% geraniol (125ml/cow) or a 15% mixture of short chain fatty acids (C8-C9-C10)(250ml/cow), and there were untreated control cattle. Trials were conducted in California and North Carolina for 3 summers. Short-term fly counts (same day) on treated cattle were reduced by 61-99%, depending on material and trial, and the fatty acid mixture provided better contro

Larval morphology of the avian parasitic genus Passeromyia: playing hide and seek with a parastomal bar.

The enigmatic larvae of the Old World genus Passeromyia Rodhain & Villeneuve, 1915 (Diptera: Muscidae) inhabit the nests of birds as saprophages or as haematophagous agents of myiasis among nestlings. Using light microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, we provide the first morphological descriptions of the first, second and third instar of P. longicornis (Macquart, 1851) (Diptera: Muscidae), the first and third instar of P. indecora (Walker, 1858) (Diptera: Muscidae), and we revise the larval morphology of P. heterochaeta (Villenueve, 1915) (Diptera: Mu

First record of human myiasis caused by association of the species Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliplioridae), Sarcophaga (Liopygia) ruficornis (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), and Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

We report a rare case of myiasis caused simultaneously by three dipterous species. A 54 yr-old indigent patient was admitted to Andaraí Hospital with painful eruptions on the scalp. The parieto-occipital sulcus showed two lesions caused by scratching associated with deep, odoriferous and exudative pediculosis. Larvae removed with the help of forceps and vaseline produced 153 adults, identified in the laboratory as 114 specimens of Chrysomya megacephala (F., 1794), 38 of Sarcophaga (Liopygia) ruficornis (F., 1794), and one of Musca domestica (L., 1758).

Evaluating the Efficiency of Baited BioFlyTrap P38T, H-Trap, and Nzi and Vavoua Traps Towards Biting Flies of Glossinidae, Tabanidae and Muscidae (Stomoxyini) Families in Northeastern KwaZulu-Natal.

In efforts to survey biting flies, there is a need for a multi-species trap that can capture diverse families of hematophagous flies, thus functioning as a more robust and representative trapping method. The current study evaluated the efficiency of the baited P38T BioFlyTrap with other standard traps, namely the H-trap used in South Africa, the Vavoua (West/Central Africa), and the Nzi (East Africa), in informing decision-making to undertake enhanced surveillance and control interventions against biting flies in South Africa. A comparative study was done using a 4 × 4 Latin Square Design (LSD

Evaluation of the efficacy of insecticide-treated scarves to protect children from the trachoma vector Musca sorbens (Diptera: Muscidae): A phase II randomised controlled trial in Oromia, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The eye-seeking fly Musca sorbens can act as a vector for ocular Chlamydia trachomatis, causing trachoma, yet there has been very little research on control measures. We investigated whether insect repellent products, specifically insecticide-treated clothing, could provide personal protection to the user from eye-seeking flies. METHODS: We first conducted a series of phase I laboratory studies to inform our choice of field intervention. We then conducted a phase II randomised controlled trial testing the efficacy of permethrin-treated scarves (PTS) in reducing fly-face contact in

Spatio-temporal dynamics and diversity of hematophagous flies (Diptera: Muscidae, Tabanidae, and Glossinidae) in livestock areas of Southern Benin: dominance of Stomoxys and occurrence of Glossina tachinoides with implications for vector surveillance.

African animal trypanosomiases (AAT) are vector-borne diseases transmitted by hematophagous flies, causing substantial economic losses in sub-Saharan African livestock systems. No multisite, inter-seasonal entomological study has previously characterized vector communities in southern Benin. This study characterizes their spatio-temporal distribution and diversity to inform AAT surveillance. A multisite survey was conducted across 6 communes during 2 contrasting seasons in 2025, using Vavoua, biconical, and Nzi traps deployed for 72 consecutive hours per session. Flies were identified morpholo

Bio-activities of Clerodendrum inerme extracts, essential oil, main terpenes and Ag nanoparticles against the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae) and their non-target effects against its parasitoid, Spalangia cameroni (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) and earthworms.

The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, is a cosmopolitan noxious dipteran hematophagous insect of veterinary and medical importance. There is a renewed interest to develop eco-friendly green pesticides to control stable flies while avoiding the health and environmental hazards of synthetic pesticides. In that framework, Clerodendrum inerme essential oil (EO) was produced by hydrodistillation, and analysed by using (GC-FID) and GC-MS). Isoeugenol (33.1 %) and dibutyl phthalate (29.3 %) were identified as the main components. Silver nanoparticles (Ci-based AgNPs were produced using the methanol (M

Evaluation of 4 adult trap types including the newly developed VectorCube for surveillance of multiple vector groups.

Comprehensive risk assessment for vector-borne disease requires effective monitoring of various vector groups. However, this depends on the traps' ability to capture multiple vector families. This study compares 3 commercially available traps, BG-Sentinel 2, BG-Trap Station as a combination of a BG-Pro and Gravid trap, and the Encephalitis Virus Surveillance trap, with the VectorCube, a newly developed prototype. Multiple openings enable multidirectional vector capture, and color cues can be easily attached and changed. All traps were tested under a uniform, carbon dioxide flow rate at 10 samp

Geographical distribution of potential mechanical vectors implicated in Surra transmission in Spain: an entomological perspective.

BACKGROUND: Haematophagous Diptera can transmit a wide range of diseases to both humans and animals. Some species of the Trypanosoma genus rely on these vectors for transmission, either cyclically or mechanically. Trypanosoma evansi, the causative agent of Surra, is the only African-origin trypanosome species detected in Spain to date, which is mechanically transmitted. METHODS: To assess the occurrence and distribution of potential mechanical vectors at the national level, a systematic review was conducted on the Hippoboscidae, Muscidae and Tabanidae families. The review followed the methodo

Effect of bait decomposition on the attractiveness to species of Diptera of veterinary and forensic importance in a rainforest fragment in Brazil.

Insects associated with carrion can have parasitological importance as vectors of several pathogens and causal agents of myiasis to men and to domestic and wild animals. We tested the attractiveness of animal baits (chicken liver) at different stages of decomposition to necrophagous species of Diptera (Calliphoridae, Fanniidae, Muscidae, Phoridae and Sarcophagidae) in a rainforest fragment in Brazil. Five types of bait were used: fresh and decomposed at room temperature (26 °C) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. A positive correlation was detected between the time of decomposition and the abundance of C

Spring succession of necrophilous insects on wildlife carcasses in Louisiana.

Seven fresh animal carcasses were monitored throughout decomposition in a mixed flatwood forest in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA from 1 April to 1 July 1999. Succession patterns of necrophilous insects were documented for the following: one Louisiana black bear (threatened species), two white-tailed deer, two alligators, and two swine as the experimental reference. Our results suggest variation in the species composition of necrophilous insects among animal carcass types. A total of 93 arthropod species, from 46 families and three classes, were manually collected from the seven carcasses. Only 1

[Remarks on the morphology of forensically significant fly maggots].

For medico-legal purposes, usually as an aid in establishing the time of death, it is considered essential for forensic pathologists to have detailed entomological knowledge regarding the recognition and classification of several types of flies and their maggots, including the families of Calliphoridae, Muscidae and Sarcophagidae. We try to deal with the description of external and internal morphology of cyclorrhaphous maggots, the biology and lifecycles of blowflies, houseflies and fleshflies.
