Muscle synergy adaptation with fatigue development in constant-power cycling.

Neuromuscular fatigue is known to alter muscle activation, but its effects on the modular control of cycling are not fully understood. In this study, we examined how fatigue during constant-power cycling affects the structure and coordination of lower-limb muscle synergies. Twenty recreational cyclists performed a constant-power test at 70% of their individual peak power until task failure. Bilateral surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from seven lower-limb muscles, processed, and decomposed into muscle synergies using non-negative matrix factorization at three normalized time points:

Jitter and muscle fiber conduction velocity in long COVID fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Long coronavirus disease (long COVID, LC) is defined as the continuation or development of new symptoms 3 months after the acute stage of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. In LC, the rate of fatigue/postexertional malaise (F-PEM) has been described to be as high as 70%, regardless of age or severity of the acute symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) function and the isolated muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) in situ in LC cases and controls. METHODS: We studied 37 subjects without SARS-CoV-2 (controls) and 32

Quantitative Muscle Fatigue Estimation with High SNR Flexible Skin Electrode.

In recent years, surface electromyography (sEMG) has been commonly used to diagnose neuromuscular abnormalities. Since sEMG measures electrical signals from various tangled muscle nerves, a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is required to estimate the condition accurately. Previously, Ag/AgCl electrodes were widely used for sEMG measurements, but noble metals are more advantageous for long-term and continuous measurement. In this study, we improved the SNR of bioelectrical signals by increasing the surface area of a flexible skin-electrode made of noble metal. The electrode surface area was inc

Trunk extensor fatigue influences trunk muscle activities during walking gait.

Prolonged physical activities may introduce risks for low back injury due to the adapted neuromuscular response of the system once neuromuscular fatigue is present. Trunk extensor muscles were fatigued in fourteen healthy women to observe myoelectric changes in the trunk musculature during walking trials performed before and after fatigue conditions. Sub-maximal efforts at 50% and 70% maximal trunk extension effort were performed until the pre-determined levels could not be sustained. Surface electromyography (EMG) from lumbar paraspinal (LP), rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO) muscl

Muscle fatigue during intermittent exercise in individuals with mental retardation.

This study examined fatigue profile during intermittent exercise in 10 men with mild to moderate mental retardation (MR) and 10 men without mental retardation (C). They performed 4 x 30s maximal knee extensions and flexions with 1-min rest on an isokinetic dynamometer. Peak torque of flexors (PTFL) and extensors (PTEX), total work (TW), and lactate were measured. Fatigue was calculated as the magnitude of decline (%) in PTFL, PTEX, and TW and as rate of decline (linear slope) in TW from 1st to 4th set. MR had lower PTFL, PTEX, TW, and lactate throughout the protocol than C, while pre-motor tim

Consequences of sarcolemma fatigue on maximal muscle strength production in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Myalgic encephalomyelitis is an invalidating chronic disease often associated with exercise-induced alterations of muscle membrane excitability (M wave). No simultaneous measurements of maximal isometric force production and sarcolemma fatigue in the same muscle group have been previously reported. We hypothesized that M wave alterations could be partly responsible for the reduced muscle force present in this invalidating disease. METHODS: This retrospective study compared two groups of patients who presented (n = 30) or not (n = 28) alterations of M waves evoked by direct muscle

Skeletal muscle-specific myostatin overexpression promotes muscle oxidative capacity and fatigue resistance in transgenic mice.

In addition to controlling muscle mass, myostatin may support oxidative metabolism and endurance. Loss of function through gene knockout or post-natal blockade generally lowers muscle oxidative capacity and increases fatigability. These observations imply that myostatin activation could promote a more oxidative and less fatigable muscle phenotype. Gain-of-function approaches that activate myostatin in vivo, however, are largely absent. To test whether myostatin promotes oxidative metabolism in muscle, we constructed transgenic (TG) mice with myostatin (Mstn) gene overexpression restricted to s

Development of muscle fatigue during intermittent submaximal static contraction in an agonist heterogeneous muscle group.

A comparison of the mean power frequency (MPF) and the root mean square amplitude (rms) of the myo-electric signal of two agonist muscles [triceps brachii (fast; TB) and anconeus (slow; ANC)] has been made during repeated intermittent static contractions. Subjects were asked to maintain different extension torques at 50% of maximal voluntary contraction until this could no longer be maintained (endurance time). The interval between successive contractions was kept constant at 3 min. During the first six successive contractions, a decrease in MPF and an increase in rms were most pronounced, ANC

Regulation of muscle potassium: exercise performance, fatigue and health implications.

This review integrates from the single muscle fibre to exercising human the current understanding of the role of skeletal muscle for whole-body potassium (K+) regulation, and specifically the regulation of skeletal muscle [K+]. We describe the K+ transport proteins in skeletal muscle and how they contribute to, or modulate, K+ disturbances during exercise. Muscle and plasma K+ balance are markedly altered during and after high-intensity dynamic exercise (including sports), static contractions and ischaemia, which have implications for skeletal and cardiac muscle contractile performance. Abdominal muscle fatigue following exercise in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a restriction on maximum ventilatory capacity contributes to exercise limitation. It has been demonstrated that the diaphragm in COPD is relatively protected from fatigue during exercise. Because of expiratory flow limitation the abdominal muscles are activated early during exercise in COPD. This adds significantly to the work of breathing and may therefore contribute to exercise limitation. In healthy subjects, prior expiratory muscle fatigue has been shown itself to contribute to the development of quadriceps fatigue. It is

Exogenously applied muscle metabolites synergistically evoke sensations of muscle fatigue and pain in human subjects.

What is the central question of this study? Can physiological concentrations of metabolite combinations evoke sensations of fatigue and pain when injected into skeletal muscle? If so, what sensations are evoked? What is the main finding and its importance? Low concentrations of protons, lactate and ATP evoked sensations related to fatigue. Higher concentrations of these metabolites evoked pain. Single metabolites evoked no sensations. This suggests that the combination of an ASIC receptor and a purinergic P2X receptor is required for signalling fatigue and pain. The results also suggest that t

Evaluation of muscle energy in isometric maintenance as an index of muscle fatigue in roller speed skating.

Roller speed skating is a discipline in which muscle fatigue plays an important role in athletes; in this work, we wanted to evaluate whether a methodological approach based on the energy required to maintain an isometric muscle contraction for one minute, indexed on the MVIC (maximum voluntary isometric contraction), i.e. % RMS/MVIC can give results similar to the frequency decay analysis/time in terms of usability for athlete training and injury prevention. Right and left gluteus maximus and vastus lateralis muscles (involved in the propulsive phase of skating ) were examined separately by s

Oxygenation and hemodynamics do not underlie early muscle fatigue for patients with work-related muscle pain.

Patients suffering from work-related muscle pain (WRMP) fatigue earlier during exercise than healthy controls. Inadequate oxygen consumption and/or inadequate blood supply can influence the ability of the muscles to withstand fatigue. However, it remains unknown if oxygenation and hemodynamics are associated with early fatigue in muscles of WRMP patients. In the present study we applied near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) on the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) and trapezius (TD) muscles of patients with WRMP (n = 18) and healthy controls (n = 17). Our objective was to determine if there were group

Acute effects of different muscle fatigue conditions during strength training on localized muscle bioimpedance in women.

This study aims to compare the localized muscle bioimpedance (ML-BIA) responses under different muscle fatigue conditions during strength training (ST). Twelve women participated in the study, which followed a crossover, counterbalanced, and randomized design. The experimental sessions were conducted using a 45° leg press machine, consisting of two conditions: a session until muscle failure (MF) and a session with no muscle failure (NMF). ML-BIA was assessed before the sessions, immediately after all sets were completed, and 20 and 30 min post-sessions. The ML-BIA measures of resistance (R), r
