A comparison of the postnatal development of muscle-spindle and periodontal-ligament neurons in the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus of the rat.

The trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) is known to include primary afferent neurons of jaw muscle spindles (MS neurons) and periodontal ligament receptors (PL neurons). The aim of this study was to clarify the postnatal development of Vmes neurons by comparing MS neurons with PL neurons using horseradish peroxidase labeling. We measured somal diameter and somal shape of MS and PL neurons in rats from postnatal day (P)7 to P70. No significant changes were seen between postnatal day P7 and P70 in somal diameter or somal shape of MS neurons. Conversely, PL neurons showed a larger somal diame

Neuropathic form of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. Report of 3 cases with complete necropsy, including the first reported case of agenesis of muscle spindles.

In 3 infants with arthrogryposis multiplex congenital (AMC) complete necropsy, including removal of the entire spinal cord, was performed. Histologically, spinal type (neurogenic) atrophy of skeletal muscles in conjunction with spinal motor neurone depletion, unaccompanied by noticeable gliosis, were the most preminent features common to all cases. In addition to these, one infant (Case 1) showed total absence of muscle spindles as evident from the examination of several hundred step-serial paraffin sections covering 11 different levels in 36 samples taken from a wide range of skeletal muscles

Vertebral position alters paraspinal muscle spindle responsiveness in the feline spine: effect of positioning duration.

Proprioceptive information from paraspinal tissues including muscle contributes to neuromuscular control of the vertebral column. We investigated whether the history of a vertebra's position can affect signalling from paraspinal muscle spindles. Single unit recordings were obtained from muscle spindle afferents in the L6 dorsal roots of 30 Nembutal-anaesthetized cats. Each afferent's receptive field was in the intact muscles of the low back. The L6 vertebra was controlled using a displacement-controlled feedback motor and was held in each of three different conditioning positions for durations

Action of vibration on the response of cat muscle spindle Ia afferents to low frequency sinusoidal stretching.

1. A study has been made of the effect of continuous vibration, at 150 Hz, upon the response of muscle spindle afferents to low frequency sinusoidal stretching (1 and 8 Hz). Using the soleus muscle of the anaesthetized cat, with severed ventral roots, recordings were made of single Ia afferents and of the massed Ia afferent discharges in the main bulk of the cut L7 dorsal root. 2. When the amplitude of vibration was large (50 micrometers, short pulses) and that of the sinusoidal stretching was not too great (50-100 micrometers, peak-to-peak) the discharge of the afferents was largely locked 1:

Effects of metabolic inhibitors and ouabain on static afferent discharges from the isolated frog muscle spindle.

Effects of metabolic inhibitors and ouabain on the rate of afferent discharges from isolated muscle spindle of the bullfrog were examined in vitro to elucidate the mechanism for generating afferent action potentials. Dinitrophenol, NaCN, iodoacetic acid, and ouabain gradually reduced the rate of discharges. These drugs were without direct effect on the nerve axon. The rate of discharges was also reduced by Li+, which is known to be minimally extruded from the interior of cells by an active transport mechanism. The rate of discharges remained approximately 50% in the presence of NaCN or in the

Five different types of centrally nucleated muscle fibres in man: elemental composition and morphological criteria. A study of myopathies, fetal tissue and muscle spindle.

Muscle biopsy material from patients with two types of benign hereditary myopathy was explored with electron probe X-ray microanalysis performed on thick cryosections observed in a scanning electron microscope equipped for the analyses. The elemental spectra thus obtained were related to the ratio between cross-sectional areas of centrally located nuclei and corresponding muscle fibres. Fetal myotubes and intrafusal muscle fibres were examined by the same methods. One of the myopathies was characterized by fibres resembling myotubes ('myotubular myopathy') and exhibited elementary spectra with

Muscle Spindle Model-Based Non-Invasive Electrical Stimulation for Motion Perception Feedback in Prosthetic Hands.

Prosthetic hands offer significant benefits for patients with hand amputations by partially replicating the function of real hands. However, most current prosthetics lack sensory feedback on movement, leading to a gap in proprioception for users. To bridge this gap and approximate the natural experience of hand use, prosthetic hands must offer detailed motion feedback. This paper introduces a non-invasive electrical stimulation approach, which can provide motion perception feedback through modeling muscle spindles. By employing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), the method gen

Abnormal vibration induced illusion of movement in essential tremor: evidence for abnormal muscle spindle afferent function.

OBJECTIVES: Vibration induced illusion of movement (VIIM) is abnormal in patients with idiopathic focal dystonia, an abnormality which corrects with fatigue of the vibrated muscle. Since dystonia and essential tremor sometimes coexist in families, we investigated the perception of VIIM and the effect of fatigue on VIIM in patients with essential tremor. METHODS: VIIM in 18 patients with essential tremor was compared with VIIM in 18 healthy control participants before and after volitional fatigue of the vibrated muscles. RESULTS: Vibration of the immobilised biceps produced a subnormal VIIM i

Optimal target localization for botulinum toxin A in treating splenius muscles dystonia based on the distribution of intramuscular nerves and spindles.

Botulinum toxin A injection is commonly used to treat splenius muscle dystonia; however, the optimal injection site within the muscle remains unidentified. This study identified the optimal target for botulinum toxin A based on the distribution of intramuscular nerves and spindles in the splenius muscles. This study included 24 adult individuals. The curve connecting the external occipital protuberance and the third thoracic spinous process was the longitudinal reference line (line L). The curve connecting the external occipital protuberance and the mastoid process was the horizontal reference

Expression of myosin heavy chain isoforms in regenerated muscle spindle fibres after muscle grafting in young and adult rats--plasticity of intrafusal satellite cells.

Satellite cells are the myogenic precursor cells of postnatal skeletal muscles. After muscle injury they can proliferate, differentiate, fuse and form myofibres. We have analysed regeneration of distinctly different types of intrafusal fibres in rat muscle spindles. We have introduced the new technique of heterochronous allotransplantation and compared it with the previously used standard autografting method. The allotransplantation method enables one to graft muscles from very young animals; we have used the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles from 2- to 28-day-old rats, which were grafte

Muscle spindle reinnervation using transplanted embryonic dorsal root ganglion cells after peripheral nerve transection in rats.

OBJECTIVES: Muscle spindles are proprioceptive receptors in the skeletal muscle. Peripheral nerve injury results in a decreased number of muscle spindles and their morphologic deterioration. However, the muscle spindles recover when skeletal muscles are reinnervated with surgical procedures, such as nerve suture or nerve transfer. Morphological changes in muscle spindles by cell transplantation procedure have not been reported so far. Therefore, we hypothesized that transplantation of embryonic sensory neurons may improve sensory neurons in the skeletal muscle and reinnervate the muscle spindl

Spindle cell hemangioendothelioma of the temporal muscle resected with zygomatic osteotomy: a case report of an unusual intramuscular lesion mimicking sarcoma.

Spindle cell hemangioendothelioma (SCH) was originally described by Weiss and Enzinger (1986) as a low-grade angiosarcoma resembling both cavernous hemangioma and Kaposi's sarcoma. Recent studies suggest that SCH is a benign neoplasm or reactive lesion accompanying a congenital or acquired vascular malformation. Most SCHs present as one or more nodules affecting the dermis or subcutis of the distal extremities. Few reports describe SCH of the head and neck region; even fewer note intramuscular SCH. Here, we describe a case of SCH involving the temporal muscle mimicking soft tissue sarcoma, who

Enhancing motor performance through brief skin cooling: exploring the role of enhanced sympathetic tone and muscle spindle sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Although brief skin cooling (BSC) is widely used in sports medicine and rehabilitation for its positive effects on motor performance, the mechanism underlying this motor facilitation effect remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To explore the hypothesis that BSC enhances muscle force generation, with cold-induced sympathetic activation leading to heightened muscle spindle sensitivity, thereby contributing to this effect. METHODS: The study involved two experiments. Experiment 1 included 14 healthy volunteers. Participants submerged their hand in ice water for 3 min. Sympathetic activity w

The loss of slow skeletal muscle isoform of troponin T in spindle intrafusal fibres explains the pathophysiology of Amish nemaline myopathy.

KEY POINTS: The pathogenic mechanism and the neuromuscular reflex-related phenotype (e.g. tremors accompanied by clonus) of Amish nemaline myopathy, as well as of other recessively inherited TNNT1 myopathies, remain to be clarified. The truncated slow skeletal muscle isoform of troponin T (ssTnT) encoded by the mutant TNNT1 gene is unable to incorporate into myofilaments and is degraded in muscle cells. By contrast to extrafusal muscle fibres, spindle intrafusal fibres of normal mice contain a significant level of cardiac TnT and a low molecular weight splice form of ssTnT. Intrafusal fibres o

Jaw muscle spindle afferents coordinate multiple orofacial motoneurons via common premotor neurons in rats: an electrophysiological and anatomical study.

Jaw muscle spindle afferents (JMSA) in the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme) project to the parvocellular reticular nucleus (PCRt) and dorsomedial spinal trigeminal nucleus (dm-Vsp). A number of premotor neurons that project to the trigeminal motor nucleus (Vmo), facial nucleus (VII) and hypoglossal nucleus (XII) are also located in the PCRt and dm-Vsp. In this study, we examined whether these premotor neurons serve as common relay pool for relaying JMSA to multiple orofacial motoneurons. JMSA inputs to the PCRt and dm-Vsp neurons were verified by recording extracellular responses to elec

Consequences of ankle joint immobilisation: insights from a morphometric analysis about fibre typification, intramuscular connective tissue, and muscle spindle in rats.

Orthosis immobilisations are routinely used in orthopaedic procedures. This intervention is applicable in bone fractures, ligament injuries, and tendonitis, among other disorders of the musculoskeletal system. We aimed to evaluate the effects of ankle joint functional immobilisation on muscle fibre morphology, connective tissue, muscle spindle and fibre typification triggered by a novel metallic orthosis. We developed a rodent-proof experimental orthosis able to hold the tibiotalar joint in a functional position for short and long terms. The tibialis anterior muscles of free and immobilised le

Influences on the fusimotor-muscle spindle system from chemosensitive nerve endings in cervical facet joints in the cat: possible implications for whiplash induced disorders.

The aim of the present study was to establish if there exists reflex connections from ligamentous structures in cervical facet joints and the fusimotor system of dorsal neck muscles. In seven cats, anaesthetized with alpha-chloralose, bradykinin (BK) of concentrations between 12 and 50 microg was injected into the facet joint between C1 and C2. Recordings were made from single muscle spindle afferents (MSA) originating in contralateral trapezius and splenius muscles (TrSp). Fusimotor induced changes in the sensitivity of the muscle spindle afferents were assessed by recording the responses to

[Peculiarities of the innervation of some muscles in the oto-rhino-laryngological region].

This study shows different aspects of the innervation of some striated muscles. It appears that neuromuscular spindles are not present in all skeletal muscles. Some muscles of the oto-rhino-laryngological region lack spindles whilst their direct antagonists possess them. Amongst the muscles of the external and middle ear, the soft palate and the larynx having opposite actions, there is in each case one muscle which does not have any spindles. These muscles then have only motor innervation. The muscles which have neuro-muscular spindles are innervated by nerves composed of extra- and intrafusal
