Isokinetic thigh muscle strength after ligament reconstruction in the knee joint: results from a 5-10 year follow-up after reconstructions of the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee joint.

We evaluated the thigh muscle strength using an isokinetic dynamometer in 80 patients 5 to 10 years following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Patients with good results also had good muscle function, both of their flexor and their extensor muscles. Patients with poor results demonstrated reduced muscle strength in both their hamstrings and their quadriceps. Patients with fair functional results demonstrated reduced strength of their extensor muscles compared to their normal leg. However, strength in their operated leg's flexor muscles was unchanged compared to their normal leg. This

Changes in forearm muscle stiffness in relation to grip strength.

INTRODUCTION: Grip strength plays a critical role in sports involving the upper extremities, prompting extensive research in this area. This study investigated the forearm muscles, which are considered to be closely associated with grip strength, with the aim of quantitatively evaluating how individual muscles are influenced by variations in grip strength by using shear wave speed measurements. METHODS: Grip strength was measured using a grip strength dynamometer, and muscle stiffness was evaluated using shear wave elastography to determine shear wave speed. Forearm muscle shear wave speed me

Effects of attentional focus on performance in standardized lumbar strength tests.

BACKGROUND: A significant body of research has revealed the effect of attentional focus on the performance of a variety of motor tasks. However, the effect of different directed attentional foci on performance in standardized lumbar strength tests remains unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the effect of directed attentional focus on performance in standardized lumbar strength tests. METHOD: The sample consisted of 48 physically active adults (23.3 ± 3.1 years), distributed into three groups: external focus group (EFG), internal focus group (IFG), and control group (CG). The study con

Use of the muscle volume analyzer to evaluate enzyme replacement therapy in late-onset Pompe disease.

The muscle volume analyzer (MVA) can predict limb muscle weight based on bioelectric impedance analysis, whereas the conventional handheld dynamometer (HHD) measures muscle strength. In this study, a 26-year-old female on invasive ventilation due to late-onset Pompe disease was treated with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for 12 months. MVA measurements demonstrated time-dependent improvement from the baseline compared to HHD measurements, showing remarkably fluctuating muscle strength. Thus, the MVA can be used as an alternative, particularly for patients suffering from severe limb muscle we

Reliability of Handheld Dynamometry to Measure Focal Muscle Weakness in Neurofibromatosis Types 1 and 2.

OBJECTIVE: To determine a suitable outcome measure for assessing muscle strength in neurofibromatosis (NF) type 1 and NF2 clinical trials, we evaluated the intraobserver reliability of handheld dynamometry (HHD) and developed consensus recommendations for its use in NF clinical trials. METHODS: Patients ≥5 years of age with weakness in at least 1 muscle group by manual muscle testing (MMT) were eligible. Maximal isometric muscle strength of a weak muscle group and the biceps of the dominant arm was measured by HHD. An average of 3 repetitions per session was used as an observation, and 3 sess

Relation between spasticity and strength in individuals with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

The relation between spasticity and strength in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) has not been extensively researched. Knee and ankle spasticity and strength were quantified in a retrospective analysis of 60 individuals with spastic diplegic CP (mean age 12 years, range 3 to 38) and a group of 50 individuals without disabilities (WD group; mean age 12 years, range 4 to 36). Spasticity was measured using a KinCom dynamometer that stretched the passive knee flexors or ankle plantarflexors at different speeds and recorded the amount of resistive torques. For the strength tests, the participant

The importance of lower-extremity muscle strength for lower-limb functional capacity in multiple sclerosis: Systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lower-limb functional capacity is impaired in most people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Reductions in lower-extremity muscle mechanical function (e.g., muscle strength) appear to have critical implications for lower-limb functional capacity. However, no review has summarized the current knowledge about the importance of muscle strength for functional tasks in PwMS. Expanding the current knowledge would advance the design of both clinical and research interventions aiming to improve functional capacity in PwMS. OBJECTIVES: (1) To identify studies that measured lower-extremity mus

Muscle strength measurements and functional outcome of an untreated complete distal rectus femoris muscle tear.

A 46-year-old man sustained an injury to his right thigh while skiing. He sought medical advice after 6 weeks, presenting a palpable painful mass of his anterior proximal thigh but no functional deficit. An isolated complete distal intrasubstance tear of the rectus femoris muscle was diagnosed on ultrasound and MRI scans, and the patient received no medical treatment. Functional and dynamometer tests after 1 year showed high limb symmetry indexes and only slightly reduced values for peak torque and total work on the injured side. The patient had resumed skiing activities and reported slight pa

Handgrip strength testing in rheumatic diseases.

Rheumatic diseases encompass diverse immune-mediated disorders that compromise musculoskeletal and systemic functions, often resulting in persistent disability. Hand muscle weakness is an early and clinically meaningful manifestation across rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Reduced handgrip strength (HGS) is an integrative measure that reflects systemic inflammation, neuromuscular involvement, and functional deterioration, providing critical insight into disease progression. The current review aims to overview available evidence on HGS
