Treatment of condylar hypoplasia with distraction osteogenesis: a case report.

This report describes the surgical-orthodontic treatment procedures of a patient with condylar hypoplasia. Condylar hypoplasia is a major factor in any facial abnormality in a growing child. This case report describes a patient with a facial anomaly with an acquired unilateral condylar hypoplasia. His asymmetry was corrected by using functional therapy for the correction of muscle tonus and distraction osteogenesis for lengthening the mandibular ramal height. Fixed orthodontic appliances were used for conventional orthodontic therapy and final occlusal adjustment.

Muscle Fiber Composition Changes after Selective Nerve Innervation.

Facial nerve paralysis interferes with mimetic muscle function. To reconstruct natural facial movement, free muscle flaps are transplanted as new muscles. However, it is difficult to maintain resting tonus. A dual innervation technique in which other nerves such as the hypoglossal nerve or contralateral facial nerve are added is often applied. Using 10-week-old rats (n = 10), the masseteric and hypoglossal nerves were cut, and the distal stump of the masseteric nerve and the proximal stump of the hypoglossal nerve were then sutured (suture group). In the other group, the masseteric nerve was c

Validity of Accelerometer-Based Sensor System for Muscle Tightness Estimation through Vibration on the Upper Limb.

Spasticity is a condition that profoundly impacts the ability to perform everyday tasks. However, its diagnosis requires trained physicians and subjective evaluations that may vary depending on the evaluator. Focal vibration of spastic muscles has been proposed as a non-invasive, pain-free alternative for spasticity modulation. We propose a system to estimate muscular tightness based on the propagation of elastic waves in the skin generated by focal vibration of the upper limb. The developed system generates focalized displacements on the biceps muscle at frequencies from 50 to 200 Hz, measure

The minimum energy hypothesis: a unified model of fixation resolution.

OBJECTIVE: To present a new theoretical construct, the Minimum Energy Hypothesis, which explains structural changes observed in the spine concomitant to spinal joint fixation resolution in initial investigations. DESIGN: Theoretical analysis. HYPOTHESIS: A unified theory of manipulative effectiveness is proposed that integrates the fixation and sensory tonus models of manipulation. The theory is based on the fact that the spine will assume a position of minimum internal energy when mechanical equilibrium is achieved. By using a simple mathematical model, it is shown that the fixation model a

Discharge of identified orexin/hypocretin neurons across the sleep-waking cycle.

Although maintained by multiple arousal systems, wakefulness falters if orexin (hypocretin), orexin receptors, or orexin neurons are deficient; narcolepsy results with hypersomnolence or sudden onset of rapid eye movement sleep [or paradoxical sleep (PS)] and loss of muscle tonus. To learn how orexin neurons maintain wakefulness, we recorded neurons in head-fixed rats across the sleep-waking cycle and then labeled them with Neurobiotin to identify them by immunohistochemistry. We show that identified orexin neurons discharge during active waking, when postural muscle tone is high in associatio

[The influence of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia on neonatal behavior].

Two groups of neonates, 30 cases with hyperbilirubinemia (307.8 +/- 99.86 mumol/L) and 30 normal newborns (control group with bilirubin 80.37 +/- 35.74 mumol/L), were evaluated with Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) and followed up at the age of 2 months and 5 months. All cases in the two groups were evaluated with NBAS at ages of 2-3 days, 12-14 days and 26-28 days. The results showed that there were statistically significant differences between the two groups in the aspects of attention and social responsiveness, the ability to modulate state of consciousness, the motor integrity a

Nonadrenergic, noncholinergic responses stabilize smooth muscle tone, with and without parasympathetic activation, in guinea-pig isolated airways.

In guinea-pig isolated airways, nonadrenergic, noncholinergic (NANC) neural responses converge towards a similar level of smooth muscle tone, via a contraction when the tone is low prior to stimulation, and via a relaxation when the tone is high prior to stimulation. We wanted to assess the effect of simultaneous parasympathetic activation on these converging NANC responses, with and without the addition of sympathetic activation. In guinea-pig isolated airways, the spontaneous airway tone was initially abolished by indomethacin (10 microM). In one series, adrenergic depletion by guanethidine

Extrinsic Laryngeal Muscle Tension in Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia with Shear Wave Elastography.

OBJECTIVES: It has been assumed that patients with primary muscle tension dysphonia (pMTD) have more extrinsic laryngeal muscle (ELM) tension, but tools to study this phenomenon lack. Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a potential method to address these shortcomings. The objectives of this study were to apply SWE to the ELMs, compare SWE measures to standard clinical metrics, and determine group differences in pMTD and typical voice users before and after vocal load. METHODS: SWE measurements of the ELMs from ultrasound examinations of the anterior neck, supraglottic compression severities fro

Sternocleidomastoid Muscle and Head Position: How to Minimize Muscle Tension.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSThe coronavirus disease pandemic has changed the setting of many jobs, forcing people to switch to remote work. In turn, telework is associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal disorders, as it is difficult to ensure an ergonomically correct work environment at home. Complaints of headaches, neck pain, and dizziness are reported by both young and old people. One of the reasons for such complaints might be an incorrect head position and prolonged tension in the neck muscles that is directly correlated with a spatially misaligned computer monitor and peripherals

Spasticity: the misunderstood part of the upper motor neuron syndrome.

Spasticity is a sensorimotor phenomenon related to the integration of the nervous system motor responses to sensory input. Although most commonly considered a velocity-dependent increase to tonic stretch, it is related to hypersensitivity of the reflex arc and changes that occur within the central nervous system, most notably, the spinal cord. Injury to the central nervous system results in loss of descending inhibition, allowing for the clinical manifestation of abnormal impulses. Muscle activity becomes overactive. This is mediated at several areas of the stretch-reflex pathway. Although spa

[The strain on the rider's arms in straight-ahead motorcycle operation].

The causes of vibration hazards to motorcycle mail deliverers have been considered to be due to the vibrations from the motorcycle, strain on the rider's hands and arms, cold conditions, and duration of the operation and others, and the rider's muscle tone in handling the motorcycle rises as the stability of the motorcycle decreases. In this report, the steering angle and banking of the motorcycle, vibration on the handgrips and EMG on the rider's arms and shoulders were measured during motorcycle operation with weights placed on the front and rear carriers. The relationship between the stabil

Styles of oroalimentary behavior: relationship with modulation of emotional behavior and myographic tension of the oral region.

The relationship between styles of oroalimentary behavior and both modulation of aggressive behavior and myographic tension at rest for some muscles engaged in the process of mastication was examined for 24 women. Our data suggested an inverse relation between outward overt hostility and oral appetitive hyperactivation with or without partial masticatory components. Moreover, the oral appetitive activation was negatively correlated with the myographic tension of oral region, particularly the right masseter.

Disorders of Muscle Mass and Tone.

Muscle disease has various clinical manifestations that range from exertional and non-exertional rhabdomyolysis, fasciculations, weakness, rigidity, stiffness, gait abnormalities, poor performance, and alterations in muscle mass and tone. Neurogenic disorders and non-neurogenic disorders such as primary muscle disease can cause muscle atrophy and changes in muscle tone. Myotonic disorders can have a genetic (eg, inherited channelopathies) or acquired (eg, electrolyte derangements) origin. Normal muscle enzyme activities do not rule out a myopathic disorder as the underlying cause of muscle atr

Automated Creak Differentiates Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia and Muscle Tension Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether automated estimates of vocal creak would differentiate speakers with adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD) from speakers with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) and speakers without voice disorders. METHODS: Sixteen speakers with AdLD, sixteen speakers with MTD, and sixteen speakers without voice disorders were recorded in a quiet environment reading aloud a standard paragraph. An open-source creak detector was used to calculate the percentage of creak (% creak) in each of the speaker's six recorded sentences. RESULTS: A Kruskal-Wallis o

Training-induced alterations of the in vivo force-velocity relationship of human muscle.

Seventeen male and female subjects (ages 20-38 yr) were tested pre- and posttraining for maximal knee extension torque at seven specific velocities (0, 0.84, 1.68, 2.51, 3.35, 4.19, and 5.03 rad . s-1) with an isokinetic dynamometer. Maximal knee extension torques were recorded at a specific joint angle (0.52 rad below the horizontal plane) for all test speeds. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups: group A, control, n = 7; group B, training at 1.68 rad . s-1, n = 5; or group C, training at 4.19 rad . s-1, n = 5.
