Effectiveness of deep dry needling versus manual therapy in the treatment of myofascial temporomandibular disorders: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are the most common cause of orofacial pain of non-dental origin, with approximately 42% of diagnoses corresponding to myofascial pain. Manual therapy and dry needling are commonly used interventions for the treatment of myofascial temporomandibular disorders. However, it is unclear whether one of them could be superior to the other. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present systematic review and network meta-analysis was to compare the effectiveness of manual therapy and dry needling in patients with myofascial TMD. METHODS: This is a systematic revie

The effects of foot reflexology on symptoms of discomfort in palliative care: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: In palliative care, the relief of discomfort is sought by an overall approach, combining prescribed medication and additional therapies, such as foot reflexology (FR). The main objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of FR in a population of inpatients in a palliative care unit (PCU).The precariousness of the patients led us to perform a feasibility study and not a cohort study from the outset. Its secondary objective was to assess the impact of an FR session on some symptoms of discomfort (anxiety, pain, troubled sleep, and psychological distress). METHODS: This is

Are manual therapies effective at reducing chronic tension headache frequency in adults?

MAYBE. Among patients with chronic tension headaches, manual therapies may reduce headache frequency more than sham manual therapy, usual care, or exercise treatments-by 1.5 to 4.2 headaches or days with headache per week (strength of recommendation, B; preponderance of evidence from primarily small, heterogeneous randomized controlled trials [RCTs]).

A pilot study of parents' experiences of reflexology treatment for infants with colic in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Many infants under 4 months suffer from infantile colic. Infants with colic cry a lot, appear to be in pain, and it is difficult to sooth them. Colic is a painful condition for the infant and very stressful to parents. Parents in Finland get advice to try reflexology treatment for their infant, but there are no studies in Finland to support this advice. AIM: The aim of the pilot study was to treat infants with reflexology and find out parents' experiences of the effects of the treatment on colic symptoms and parental stress. METHOD: A total of 33 parents of 35 infants diagnosed w

Manual therapy treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common orthopedic condition with a prevalence of 2%-3% in children aged 10-16 years. Conservative interventions remain controversial and are usually based on physical therapy exercises and treatments. Manual therapy techniques may also serve as adequate treatments for AIS due to their ability to improve range of motion and decrease muscle tone and pain. OBJECTIVE: To critically assess the current literature on the effectiveness of manual therapy methods used to treat AIS. METHODS: PubMed, PEDro, BioMed Central, and Google Scholar databas

Growing pains: a noninflammatory pain syndrome of early childhood.

The term 'growing pains' has been used for almost 200 years to refer to the often severe, generally bilateral lower-extremity nocturnal pains experienced by up to one-third of all children at some time during early childhood. No clear mechanism has yet been identified that explains these pains, but there is an increasing body of evidence indicating that several factors, individually or in combination, might be responsible for this phenomenon. These include mechanical factors, such as joint hypermobility and flat feet, decreased pain thresholds, reduced bone strength, and emotional factors invo

[Pain modulating systems and manual medicine].

Pain can be modulated on several different levels of the nociceptive system. Starting with the primary nociceptive afferents, which can be sensitized and desensitized, a major part of the nociceptive control takes place on the spinal level, where the information is modulated through interneurons with excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, before it is forwarded via projection neurons to the thalamus and different brain stem nuclei. Endogenous opioids play hereby an important role. The activity of the spinal neurons is, in turn, influenced by descending excitatory and inhibitory pathways

Osteopathic manipulation and its applicability in the emergency department: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), also known as osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), is a set of manual techniques, developed by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, founder of osteopathic medicine, initially limited to osteopathic medicine, for the treatment of painful conditions. This toolset is now used by allopathic physicians, international osteopaths, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other healthcare workers for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. OMT can be used in the emergency department (ED) for the treatment of musculoskeletal complaints as an adjunct to pharma
