Causes of Musculoskeletal Pain in Paget's Disease of Bone.

Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is characterised by increased and disorganised bone remodelling leading to various complications, such as bone deformity, deafness, secondary osteoarthritis, and pathological fracture. Pain is the most common presenting symptom of PDB, but it is unclear to what extent this is due to increased metabolic activity of the disease, complications, or unrelated causes. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 168 people with PDB attending secondary care referral centres in the UK. We documented the presence of musculoskeletal pain and sought to determine its underlying ca

The effects of curcuminoids on musculoskeletal pain: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Western countries are increasingly using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to assist with relieving ailments. Turmeric, from the ginger family Zingiberaceae, has a history of use for medicinal purposes. The polyphenols found in turmeric (curcuminoids) have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties. With the use of CAMs increasing, it is important for the effectiveness of curcuminoids to be established. OBJECTIVES: To identify the effectiveness of the use of curcuminoids for the amelioration of musculoskeletal pain. INCLUSION CRITERIA TYPES OF PARTICI

Epidemiology of musculoskeletal pain in a pediatric emergency department.

The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the percentage of emergency department (ED) visits due to musculoskeletal pain (MSP) by children 3-14 years of age during a period of 1 year; (2) to determine the most frequent presenting complaints; and (3) to characterize their etiology. A cross-sectional study was performed on children aged 3-14(11/12) years attended at the ED of a tertiary hospital due to MSP. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were reviewed 5 days each month for 12 consecutive months. Study days were selected by computer-generated simple random s

A Neurofeedback System to Decrease Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

The existing methods for treating chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain do not address the restoration of altered brain activity, referred to as maladaptive plasticity, resulting from the effects of chronic MSK pain. Using electroencephalography (EEG) an increase in event-related alpha power over the somatosensory cortex was previously observed during movement in chronic MSK pain. A low cost neurofeedback system was developed that focuses on decreasing event-related alpha power. The system detects movement initiation by electromyography (EMG) and extracts movement-related alpha power over the som

Biological Markers of Musculoskeletal Pain: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal pain (MSP) is the leading contributor to disability, limiting mobility and dexterity. As research on the determinants of MSP is evolving, biomarkers can probably play a significant role in understanding its causes and improving its clinical management. This scoping review aimed to provide an overview of the associations between biomarkers and MSP. METHODS: This study followed Arksey and O'Malley and PRISMA-ScR recommendations. Keywords related to biomarkers, association, and MSP were searched on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases from inception

Tick-Borne Disease Infections and Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

IMPORTANCE: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) other than Lyme disease, such as spotted fever group rickettsiosis, ehrlichiosis, and galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-gal) syndrome, are an emerging public health issue. Long-term sequelae secondary to Ehrlichia or Rickettsia infection are uncommon; however, musculoskeletal symptoms are often attributed to prior tick exposure. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential associations between prior exposure to TBDs and musculoskeletal symptoms, including radiographic osteoarthritis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study analyzed serum sample

Central Sensitization in Musculoskeletal Pain: Lost in Translation?

Central sensitization is a physiological mechanism associated with enhanced sensitivity and pain responses. At present, central sensitization cannot be determined directly in humans, but certain signs and symptoms may be suggestive of it. Although central sensitization has received increasing attention in the clinical literature, there is a risk that certain distinctions are being lost. This paper summarizes current knowledge of the physiology of central sensitization and its possible manifestations in patients, in order to inform a debate about the relevance of central sensitization for physi

The spectrum of pediatric amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Children presenting with musculoskeletal pain to pediatric rheumatology clinics are very heterogeneous and on a continuum from those with localized pain to total body pain. Many report intermittent, rather than constant, pain. We examined clinical and psychological characteristics of these children at presentation and specifically those who fulfilled the criteria for fibromyalgia. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, cross-sectional cohort study of children under ≤18 years old presenting to the pediatric rheumatology pain clinic between January 2015 and July 2019 and enrolled in

Physical pain and musculoskeletal discomfort in vascular surgeons.

OBJECTIVE: Work-related pain and disability have been reported in the literature among surgeons. This national survey was designed to identify the prevalence and severity of these symptoms in vascular surgeons. METHODS: A survey was emailed to the 2910 members of the Society for Vascular Surgery. Physical pain was evaluated based on body part, and type of vascular procedure performed using the Borg 0 to 10 pain scale. Wellness questions were also queried. RESULTS: A total of 775 of Society for Vascular Surgery members responded, with a 26.6% response rate. Retirees were excluded from the stu

[An Endurance Athlete with Calf Pain - Probably Musculoskeletal?].

An Endurance Athlete with Calf Pain - Probably Musculoskeletal? Abstract. Deep vein thromboses are frequent and account for one third of all cardiovascular diseases. But undoubtedly patients often present risk factors. To assume a deep vein thrombosis in an endurance athlete with pain in the calf, therefore seems unreasonable. The positive D-dimer and the side differences of the calf diameter was the key for the correct diagnosis. The treatment with Heparin improved clinical symptoms within 5 days and the patient became free of pain. The additionally conducted ultrasound showed no more hints f

Chronic musculoskeletal pain in children: assessment and management.

Paediatricians and paediatric rheumatologists review a large number of children with ongoing pain (disease and non-disease related). A small number of these develop chronic pain conditions that are complex and distressing. Over recent years studies of the epidemiology, aetiology and rehabilitation of pain and pain-associated disability in children have revealed a large prevalence of clinically relevant pain, and have emphasized the need for early recognition and intervention. Medication has a role when part of a multidisciplinary framework, although there is little evidence for or against the

Ethanol sclerotherapy reduces pain in symptomatic musculoskeletal hemangiomas.

UNLABELLED: Hemangiomas, benign vascular lesions, require intervention if causing pain or functional limitations. Functional deficits are common after excision, favoring minimally invasive treatments. To determine whether ethanol sclerotherapy reduces pain and lesion size and to assess complications in symptomatic musculoskeletal hemangiomas, we retrospectively reviewed 19 patients (six males, 13 females; mean age, 34 years) meeting criteria of confirmed hemangioma, treatment with ethanol sclerotherapy, and minimum of 6 weeks of followup. Fourteen were primary lesions and five were recurrent;

Interrelationships between chronic tension-type headache, musculoskeletal pain, and vitamin D deficiency: Is osteomalacia responsible for both headache and musculoskeletal pain?

BACKGROUND: Headache, musculoskeletal symptoms, and vitamin D deficiency are common in the general population. However, the interrelations between these three have not been delineated in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied a consecutive series of patients who were diagnosed as having chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) and were subjected to the estimation of serum vitamin D levels. The subjects were divided into two groups according to serum 25(OH) D levels as normal (>20 ng/ml) or vitamin D deficient (<20 ng/ml). RESULTS: We identified 71 such patients. Fifty-
