Impact of joint laxity and hypermobility on the musculoskeletal system.

Excessive joint laxity, or hypermobility, is a common finding of clinical importance in the management of musculoskeletal conditions. Hypermobility is common in young patients and in general is associated with an increased incidence of musculoskeletal injury. Hypermobility has been implicated in ankle sprains, anterior cruciate ligament injury, shoulder instability, and osteoarthritis of the hand. Patients with hypermobility and musculoskeletal injuries often seek care for diffuse musculoskeletal pain and injuries with no specific inciting event. Orthopaedic surgeons and other healthcare provi

Musculoskeletal sonography in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the role of sonography in depicting periarticular changes in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to find out whether certain tendons in juvenile SLE patients were different from those of healthy controls. METHODS: Thirty juvenile SLE patients (27 female, 3 male) were recruited for this study. Sonographic evaluations were performed in the knee, ankle, elbow, wrist, and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints on the nondominant sides of the individuals. For comparison, 32 healthy volunteers were included as a control group. RESULTS: Knee effusion was observed mor

Effect of acupuncture on disorders of musculoskeletal system in Nigerians.

Acupuncture was offered to patients with lesions affecting the locomotor system. These patients had received conventional physiotherapy treatment with limited success. The lesions treated by acupuncture were hemiplegia, low back pain, frozen shoulder, dropped foot, Sciatica, and arthritis of the knee and hip. Response to acupuncture was excellent in the more acute conditions of low back pain and frozen shoulder, where six treatment sessions were required for complete recovery. The more chronic conditions required many more treatment sessions and the improvement recorded was significant, though

The role of computed tomography in diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Computed tomography has added another dimension to the evaluation of musculoskeletal disease. The ability to discern subtle differences in tissue densities and the capability of viewing structures in the axial plane has greatly aided the resolution between normal and pathologic tissue and the appreciation of the anatomic relation between normal and pathologic structures. This paper deals with the application of CT in the evaluation of neoplastic, inflammatory, traumatic, metabolic, and congenital diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Simulated effects of the peripheral musculoskeletal system on hand tremor.

Although tremor is the most common movement disorder, the role of the peripheral musculoskeletal system in shaping tremor is not fully understood. Elucidating how tremorogenic muscle activity propagates through the peripheral musculoskeletal system on its way to becoming tremor at the hand is important for understanding the effects of (and improving) tremor-suppression strategies. We present the first model of tremor propagation throughout the upper limb from tremorogenic muscle activity to hand tremor. Using this linear, time-invariant multi-input multi-output model, we simulated the hand tre

Ultrasound-Guided Interventional Procedures in the Musculoskeletal System in Trauma.

Ultrasound (US) has gained traction in musculoskeletal imaging. There are 2 strong points that have boosted the role of US: the possibility of performing dynamic explorations and of guiding interventional procedures. This article reviews the applications of musculoskeletal image-guided procedures in acute and chronic trauma, excluding those specifically related to sports medicine. Most of them are performed using US guidance. Finally, foreign bodies can also be removed using US. All these procedures are safe and highly effective, sometimes making surgery unnecessary. With minimal invasiveness,

Nontuberculous mycobacterial infection of the musculoskeletal system in immunocompetent hosts.

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) were considered saprophytic organisms for many years but now are recognized as human pathogens. Although humans are routinely exposed to NTM, the rate of clinical infection is low. Such infections usually occur in the elderly and in patients who are immunocompromised. However, there has been an increasing incidence in recent years of infections in immunocompetent hosts. NTM infections in immunocompetent individuals are secondary to direct inoculation either contamination from surgical procedures or penetrating injuries rather than hematogenous diss

Preliminary validation of the Review of Musculoskeletal System (ROMS) questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of clinical outcomes is necessary to define best practice. It requires a validated tool that can be easily applied as part of clinical practice. We present the preliminary validation of a brief self-reported Review of Musculoskeletal System (ROMS) questionnaire that captures functional limitations due to musculoskeletal problems and other medical and emotional conditions. METHODS: Data were derived from a clinical outcomes database (Orthopaedic Minimal Data Set [OrthoMiDaS]) that combines patient-reported data collected as part of routine care and secondary data extrac

[Tuberculosis manifestations in the musculoskeletal system exemplified by Poncet's disease].

Tuberculosis is a communicable disease that is occasionally complicated by arthritis, either as part of a disseminated primary infection or through late reactivation, often in immunocompromised hosts such as elderly people, HIV-positive patients or patients under immunosuppressive therapy. Even though musculoskeletal manifestations occur in only about 2% of tuberculosis cases, they can be very heterogeneous and present as spondylitis, osteomyelitis or mono-oligo-polyarthritis. Because of the potential for disastrous outcomes in cases where the diagnosis is delayed, it is important to recognize

Diffusion weighted imaging in musculoskeletal system: where are we now?

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is an advanced MRI technique that harnesses the movement of water molecules within tissues to assess and characterize a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders. By differentiating between isotropic and anisotropic diffusion, DWI provides critical insights into tissue integrity and pathology, proving instrumental in diagnosing conditions. Its sensitivity to changes in tissue microstructure is quantified through metrics like the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA). Advanced methodologies, including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) an

Sexual Dimorphism in the Musculoskeletal System: Sex Hormones and Beyond.

Mounting evidence indicates that whereas some fundamental aspects of bone cell differentiation and function are similar in females and males, there is a clear contribution of sex/gender on the effects of signaling molecules on bone mass and strength and, consequently, on the effects of pharmacologic approaches to treat skeletal disorders. However, until recently, most studies were designed and performed using only 1 sex, resulting in a scarcity of published information on sexual dimorphism of the musculoskeletal system, including the mandible/masticatory muscles and the axial and appendicular
