Lullament: lullaby and lament therapeutic qualities actualized through music therapy.

Lullabies and laments promote new awareness, enculturation, adaptation, and grief expression. These concepts' relevance to palliative care, however, has not been examined. In this study, a music therapist used a grounded theory-informed design to reflexively analyze lullaby and lament qualities, evident in more than 20 years of personal palliative care practice. Thus, the construct "lullament" emerged, which signified helpful moments when patients' and families' personal and sociohistorical relationship with lullabies and laments were actualized. Specific music could be both a lullaby and a la

Music therapy: a novel motivational approach for dually diagnosed patients.

Co-occurring mental illness and addiction is very common and results in worse treatment outcomes compared to singly diagnosed addicted individuals. Integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders is associated with better treatment outcomes; however there is a wide range of what is included in integrated treatment. Due to patient and staff interests, integrated treatment often includes complementary and alternative therapies, including music and art therapy. There is a need to study how these approaches effect treatment engagement, retention, and outcome. This study was a prospective naturalis

[Music therapy effectiveness to decrease anxiety in mechanically ventilated patients].

The aim of this review is to find out whether or not music therapy is an effective nursing intervention to decrease anxiety and promote relaxation in ventilator-dependent patients. For the purpose of this review, relaxation has been considered as a reduction in state anxiety and physiologic signs (heart rate, blood pressure or respiratory rate). A comprehensive search has been conducted in electronic databases (Cochrane Library, Medline, CINHAL, Embase and PsycLit) in order to identify systematic reviews on music therapy effectiveness or randomised control trials that compare the effectiveness

Music in mind, a randomized controlled trial of music therapy for young people with behavioural and emotional problems: study protocol.

AIMS: This article is a report of a trial protocol to determine if improvizational music therapy leads to clinically significant improvement in communication and interaction skills for young people experiencing social, emotional or behavioural problems. BACKGROUND: Music therapy is often considered an effective intervention for young people experiencing social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. However, this assumption lacks empirical evidence. STUDY DESIGN: Music in mind is a multi-centred single-blind randomized controlled trial involving 200 young people (aged 8-16 years) and their p

The Effect of Music-Repeating Robotic Parrot Therapy and Different Instrumental Live Music Therapies on Anxiety and Fatigue Levels in Hemodialysis Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three different music-based interventions on anxiety and fatigue levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis, compared to a concurrent control group receiving standard care. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial involved 64 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis. They were randomly assigned to four equal groups (n = 16 each): live music, live ney sound therapy (using a traditional reed flute known for its soothing, breath-like tones), a music-repeating robotic parrot therapy (an interactive robotic parrot that repeats music or sounds pr

Cognitive enhancement through music therapy: meta-analytic evidence across clinical population.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive decline in aging populations presents a growing public health concern. Music therapy has emerged as a promising non-invasive approach to enhance cognitive function. METHODS: This meta-analysis synthesized data from 14 studies (2010-2025) assessing Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) outcomes following music therapy interventions. RESULTS: Results revealed a significant improvement in cognitive function (SMD = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.26 to 0.67), particularly with passive listening-based therapies administered for more than 3 months (SMD = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.05 to 1.20). Music therapy in health care practice: promise, pitfalls, and policy implications.

Music therapy has gained recognition as a safe, effective, and person-centered intervention that bridges neuroscience, medicine, and humanities. This review synthesizes current evidence on its clinical applications, mechanisms of action, ethical complexities, and policy implications. While the strongest evidence lies in dementia care, expanding research demonstrates its effectiveness in managing a wide range of conditions, including Parkinson's disease, stroke, acquired and traumatic brain injury (ABI/TBI), schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder, depression, insomnia, and in palliative care.

Effects of music therapy on intravitreal injections: a randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Procedures are frequently performed under regional or local anaesthesia, where patients maintain a level of consciousness. This has been associated with heightened pre- and intraprocedural anxiety levels, which may increase the risk of emotional distress and worsen patient outcomes. Music therapy has been proposed as an effective non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety levels. This is a pilot study aimed at evaluating the effect of music therapy on anxiety and perceived pain during intravitreal injections (IVI) in the Singaporean context. METHODS: Study participants w

Music Therapy and Nursing Cotreatment in Integrative Hospice and Palliative Care.

Integrative hospice and palliative care is a philosophy of treatment framing patients as whole persons composed of interrelated systems. The interdisciplinary treatment team is subsequently challenged to consider ethical and effective provision of holistic services that concomitantly address these systems at the end of life through cotreatment. Nurses and music therapists, as direct care professionals with consistent face-to-face contact with patients and caregivers, are well positioned to collaborate in providing holistic care. This article introduces processes of referral, assessment, and tr

History of Music Therapy and Its Contemporary Applications in Cardiovascular Diseases.

Contrary to what is commonly believed, music therapy is an old cure, the use of which is lost in the mists of time. Music always has been perceived to have particular healing powers, and the entire history of civilization contains aspects that link music to physical and mental healing. It seems that the adoption of music for therapeutic purposes harks back to a distant past, probably since the Paleolithic period: it was believed that listening to music could affect the behavior of human beings. In later centuries, the concept of "musical organ-tropism" was born and developed, because according

Clinical application of Medical Resonance Therapy Music in high-risk pregnancies.

Music is an ancient method for healing. In the year 550 B.C., Pythagoras from Greece developed a concept for the use of music in medicine, esteeming music higher than many other medical treatments. The Medical Resonance Therapy Music (MRT-Music) of the German classical composer and musicologist Peter Huebner is built on this concept of Pythagorean music medicine. Its therapeutic effect may be best explained by the natural phenomenon of resonance between the harmony laws of the microcosm of music and the biological laws of the body. Results received after application of MRT-Music indicate multi

A Phenomenological Analysis of Older Adults' Lived Experience in Music Therapy.

With population aging, policies and practices that support healthy aging can be strengthened by creating accessible environments and incorporating the voices of older adults. This phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experiences of 12 Brazilian older adults participating in a group music therapy process. Over 3 months, a music therapist facilitated 12 weekly music therapy sessions for a group of 12 older adults. Each session lasted an hour and included songs based on participants' musical preferences. Beginning with the 6th session, the group engaged in writing a song addressing t

Developing Music Therapy in Maternity Care in Ireland: A Qualitative Study.

Music therapy can be a form of preventive or early intervention. It strengthens and utilizes women's own resources to build resilience, aids relaxation, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, promotes parent-infant attachment, and adapts to physical and psychological challenges during the perinatal period. The inclusion of music therapy in Irish maternity services has the potential to improve the quality of healthcare delivery provided to parents and infants. Recent studies demonstrate that the prospect of music therapy is welcomed by parents and perinatal healthcare professionals in Irel
