The predictive association between radiological findings and lung cancer development in patients exposed to sulfur mustard gas: 4 decades follow up of 719 victims.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the survivors exposed to Sulfur Mustard (SM). The late abnormalities can be present as chronic bronchitis, tracheobronchial stenosis, asthma, bronchiectasis, airway narrowing, lung fibrosis, and lung cancers. This study aims to investigate the association between radiological findings and lung cancer development in patients exposed to sulfur mustard gas. METHODS: We entered 719 victims exposed to SM during the Iran-Iraq war into our follow-up study in a consensus manner. They were periodically followed with C

A turn-on fluorescent probe based on N-(rhodamine-B)-thiolactam-2-n-butane with ionic liquids for selective and sensitive detection of mustard gas stimulant.

Sulfur mustard (SM) is recognized as one of the most lethal warfare agents. It has the potential to seriously affect public health and safety. To employ appropriate medical countermeasures and treat victims as quickly as possible, the development of a rapid and simple SM detection technique is crucial. The aim of the present study was to explore novel detection systems exhibiting excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. An SM probe, namely N-(rhodamine-B)-thiolactam-2-n-butane (SRB-NB), which was based on a thiolactam structure, was effectively designed and synthesized. The rhodamine and th

Evaluation of umbilical cord blood serum eye drops for severe dry eye in two distinct populations-Sjögren's syndrome and mustard gas-induced ocular injury: Protocol for a pilot randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) serum eye drops contain growth factors, neurotrophic agents, and antimicrobial compounds that may promote ocular surface healing and regeneration. Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune condition characterized by reduced tear production and ocular surface damage, often resulting in severe dry eye symptoms. Mustard gas chemical veterans also suffer from similar debilitating ocular complications due to chronic inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction. While conventional treatments offer symptomatic relief, they lack essential components of na

Expression of selected neuropeptides in pathogenesis of bullous pemphigoid and dermatitis herpetiformis.

Sulfur mustard gas is one of the chemical warfare gases that roughly about 45000 soldiers continue to suffer long-lasting consequences of exposure during the Iran-Iraq war between 1980 and 1988. According to the common pulmonary lesions due to this gas exposure, we studied gross and microscopic pulmonary lesions in cadavers and also assessed the main causes of mortality caused by mustard gas exposure. A case-series study was performed on hospital record files of 100 cadavers that were exposed with documented sulfur mustard gas during the Iran-Iraq war from 1979 to 1988 and autopsied in legal m

Evidence of hair loss after subacute exposure to 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, a mustard analog, and beneficial effects of N-acetyl cysteine.

Mustard gas has been used as a vesicant chemical warfare agent. However, a suitable biomarker for monitoring mustard gas exposure is not known. We observed that the hairs of the guinea pigs exposed intratracheally to subacute doses of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), a mustard analog, came out very easily though there was no sign of skin lesions or skin damage. Also the hairs looked rough and dry and lost the shiny glaze. There was no recovery from this hair loss, though the animals never became hairless, following CEES exposure. Hairs were observed in this study both visually and with ligh

Effects of exposure to sulfur mustard on speech aerodynamics.

UNLABELLED: Sulfur mustard is an alkylating agent with highly cytotoxic properties even at low exposure. It was used widely against both military and civilian population by Iraqi forces in the Iraq-Iran war (1983-1988). Although various aspects of mustard gas effects on patients with chemical injury have been relatively well characterized, its effects on speech are still evolving. We evaluated aerodynamics of speech in male patients following sulfur mustard inhalation. In a case-control study patients with chemical injuries (n=19) along with age and sex-matched healthy control group (n=20) wer

Solid sorbent collection and gas chromatographic determination of bis(2-chloroethyl)sulfide in air at trace concentrations.

This article describes a method for the quantitative determination of the toxic military agent bis(2-chloroethyl)-sulfide (or sulfur mustard) in air or other similar gases at parts-per-trillion levels. The method entails the adsorptive trapping of mustard vapor on a bed of Tenax-GC, followed by the transfer of trapped mustard to a smaller sorbent bed and the thermal desorption of the mustard into a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame photometric detector. Interference from an oxidizing gas (probably NO2) in the air is circumvented by sampling through a filter impregnated with triethanolami

A review on delayed toxic effects of sulfur mustard in Iranian veterans.

Iranian soldiers were attacked with chemical bombs, rockets and artillery shells 387 times during the 8-years war by Iraq (1980-1988). More than 1,000 tons of sulfur mustard gas was used in the battlefields by the Iraqis against Iranian people. A high rate of morbidities occurred as the result of these attacks. This study aimed to evaluate the delayed toxic effects of sulfur mustard gas on Iranian victims. During a systematic search, a total of 193 (109 more relevant to the main aim) articles on sulfur mustard gas were reviewed using known international and national databases. No special evalu

Oxidative Stress: An Intersection Between Radiation and Sulfur Mustard Lung Injury.

Nuclear and chemical weapons of mass destruction share both a tragic and beneficial legacy in mankind's history and health. The horrific health effects of ionizing radiation and mustard gas exposures unleashed during disasters, wars, and conflicts have been harnessed to treat human health maladies. Both agents of destruction have been transformed into therapies to treat a wide range of cancers. The discovery of therapeutic uses of radiation and sulfur mustard was largely due to observations by clinicians treating victims of radiation and sulfur mustard gas exposures. Clinicians identified vuln

[Using thalidomide against pathological neovascularization].

Thalidomide was first used during the 50's-60's, especially for morning sickness in pregnant women. It was found to be a powerful teratogen only years later and was banned from use. At the same time it was found to have anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic properties and was approved as treatment for leprosy. As such, thalidomide might be used against pathological neovascularization, as seen in mustard gas exposure. From past experience we know that the eyes are the most vulnerable organ to mustard gas exposure. In some of the casualties there is a late sequella including pathological corneal

Former poison gas workers and cancer: incidence and inhibition of tumor formation by treatment with biological response modifier N-CWS.

Mustard gas is known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects on animal and human cells. In this report, 1,632 male Japanese who worked in poison gas factories at some time between the years 1927 and 1945 were studied to determine comparative risk for development of cancer, the reference population being data on Japanese males overall. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for lung cancer in workers directly and indirectly involved in the production of mustard gas was significantly elevated. In addition, SMR for lung cancer in worker who had worked for more than 5 years was also significant

War gases as olfactory probes.

The tear gas ethyl bromoacetate is a fruity-smelling alkylating agent that blocks the ability of the frog nose to respond to esters and a variety of other odorants, but leaves sensitivity to amines unimpaired. Lachrymators and chemical warfare agents of other functional types such as sulfides (mustard gas) and amines (nitrogen mustards) may have similarly specific actions that will enable their use as chemical probes of the sense of smell.

Senescence and Stress Signaling Pathways in Corneal Cells After Nitrogen Mustard Injury.

Mustard gas keratopathy (MGK), a complication of exposure to sulfur mustard, is a blinding ocular surface disease involving key cellular pathways, including apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Recent studies indicate that cellular senescence contributes to the pathophysiology of mustard gas toxicity. This study aimed to assess senescence and stress-related pathways-particularly mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling-in nitrogen mustard (NM)-induced corneal injury. In vitro, primary human corneal epithelial (P-HCECs), primary human corneal mesenchymal stromal cells (hcMSCs

Toxicology and pharmacology of the chemical warfare agent sulfur mustard.

There have been reports of chemical attacks in which sulfur mustard might have been used (a) on Iranian soldiers and civilians during the Gulf War in 1984 and 1985 and (b) in an Iraqi chemical attack on the Iranian-occupied village of Halbja in 1988, resulting in many civilian casualties. Heavy use of chemical warfare in Afghanistan by the Soviet military is a recent innovation in military tactics that has been highly successful and may ensure further use of chemical agents in future military conflicts and terrorist attacks as a profitable adjunct to conventional military arms. Mustard is a po

Long-term Respiratory Effects of Mustard Vesicants.

Sulfur mustard and related vesicants are cytotoxic alkylating agents that cause severe damage to the respiratory tract. Injury is progressive leading, over time, to asthma, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, airway stenosis, and pulmonary fibrosis. As there are no specific therapeutics available for victims of mustard gas poisoning, current clinical treatments mostly provide only symptomatic relief. In this article, the long-term effects of mustards on the respiratory tract are described in humans and experimental animal models in an effort to define cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to
