Cruciferous vegetables are gaining importance as nutritious and sustainable foods, rich in phytochemical compounds such as glucosinolates (GSLs). However, the breakdown products of these sulfur-based compounds, mainly represented by isothiocyanates (ITC) and indoles, can contribute to human health. In the human digestive system, the formation of these compounds continues to varying extents in the different stages of digestion, due to the contact of GSLs with different gastric fluids and enzymes under the physicochemical conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, the aim of the presen

Honey bees and brassica plants are co-evolved and due to the peculiar floral characters, mustard (Brassica juncea) plants are strongly dependent on bees for survival. Mustard is one of the most important oilseeds across the world. Insect pests often cause huge economic losses in mustard and their management, especially during flowering stage is very crucial to achieve maximum yield, although this step often displays undesirable effects on the foraging bees. Effects of synthetic pesticides on bees are widely documented and extensively reported. Although the numbers of pesticides/bio-pesticides

The present study aimed to explore the potential of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.) for phytoremediation of soil contaminated with ciprofloxacin. The antibiotic ciprofloxacin was selected due to its rapidly increasing presence in soil. It is widely used in both livestock and human healthcare, making it the most prescribed drug. To address the remediation of ciprofloxacin in soil, a controlled greenhouse study was performed. B. juncea L. germinated seeds were sown in triplicates with ciprofloxacin concentrations of 50 mg kg-1 to 300 mg kg-1 for three weeks. To assess ciprofloxacin uptake by

S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR). a master regulator of NO homeostasis, is a single-copy gene in most plants. In Lotus japonicus, two GSNOR isoforms were identified exhibiting similar kinetic properties but differential tissue-specific expressions. Previously, a genome-wide identification in Brassica juncea revealed four copies of GSNOR, each encoding proteins that vary in subunit molecular weights and pI. Here, we report multiple forms of GSNOR using 2D immunoblot which showed 4 immunopositive spots of 41.5 kDa (pl 5.79 and 6.78) and 43 kDa (pl 6.16 and 6.23). To confirm, purification o

BACKGROUND: Aluminium (Al) toxicity in acidic soils is a major constraint limiting rapeseed-mustard productivity, particularly affecting Brassica juncea cultivation in acid-prone regions. The narrow genetic base of B. juncea restricts genetic improvement for Al toxicity stress tolerance. To enhance genetic variability and introgress beneficial genomic regions, Brassica carinata-derived B. juncea introgression lines (ILs) were developed and evaluated to dissect the genetic basis of root system architecture and stress tolerance under Al toxicity conditions.
RESULTS: Significant genetic variabil

Brassica juncea cv. 426308 was grown in soils containing 150 mg Cd(2+)kg(-1) soil. After 38 days, the soil was amended with two rates of citric acid or NTA (10 and 20 mmol kg(-1) soil). Control soil was not amended with chelates. Plants were harvested during growth, immediately before and seven days after chelate addition. Shoot composition of organic and phenolic acids and shoot Cd(2+) concentration were determined. Cadmium concentration remained constant during the growth and increased following NTA and citric acid amendments depending on chelate type and concentration. The highest increment

The development of flower and pollen is a complex biological process that involves multiple metabolic pathways in plants. In revealing novel insights into flower and pollen development underlying male sterility (MS), we conducted an integrated profiling of gene and protein activities in developing buds in cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) mutants of mustard (Brassica juncea). Using RNA-Seq and label-free quantitative proteomics, 11,832 transcripts and 1780 protein species were identified with significant differential abundance between the male sterile line 09-05A and its maintainer line 09-05B at

Most hyperaccumulator plants have little economic values, and therefore have not been widely used in Cd-contaminated soils. Rape species are Cd hyperaccumulators with high economic values. Black mustard seed (Brassica juncea) has a higher accumulation ability and a higher tolerance for Cd than oilseed rape (Brassica napus), but its biomass is relatively low and its geographical distribution is limited. However, it is unknown why B. juncea (Bj) is more tolerant to and accumulates more Cd than B. napus (Bn). Here, we found that the differences in Cd accumulation and tolerance between the two spe

A new analytical method employing gas chromatography coupled to electron capture and nitrogen phosphorus detection (GC-ECD/NPD) has been developed and validated for the screening and quantification of 51 pesticides in a matrix of high chlorophyll content - white mustard (Sinapis alba L.). For preparation of the sample extract, the citrate buffered QuEChERS procedure was followed. However certain changes were made to adapt the method to our needs and available laboratory resources. The sample size was reduced to 5 g, 10 mL water was added and exchange of solvent before GC analysis was done. The

Methylotrophic bacteria were isolated from the phyllosphere of different crop plants such as sugarcane, pigeonpea, mustard, potato and radish. The methylotrophic isolates were differentiated based on growth characteristics and colony morphology on methanol supplemented ammonium mineral salts medium. Amplification of the mxaF gene helped in the identification of the methylotrophic isolates as belonging to the genus Methylobacterium. Cell-free culture filtrates of these strains enhanced seed germination of wheat (Triticum aestivum) with highest values of 98.3% observed using Methylobacterium sp.

BACKGROUND: Germin-like proteins (GLPs) are naturally occurring glycoproteins ubiquitously found in all plants. These are members of the cupin super family having defensive roles against pathogens causing biotic stresses. Before this study GLPs were not thoroughly investigated in Brassica juncea and its parent species particularly concerning biotic stress responses. This study aimed to identify and characterize the GLP family in B. juncea and its progenitor species, and to determine candidate B. juncea genes (GLPs) conferring resistance against biotic stresses using Alternaria leaf spot diseas

If Norflurazon-treated mustard (Sinapis alba L.) seedlings are grown in low-fluence-rate white light, accumulation of carotenoids is completely inhibited, while levels of chlorophyll (Chl) a and b are comparable to those of control seedlings. Measurements of fluorescence yield and oxygen evolution indicate that carotenoid-free, green cotyledons are unable to perform leephotosynthesis in vivo. When thylakoid membranes were prepared and electron transport was measured in vitro, only PSI but not PSII activity was detected. Solubilization of the photosystems from thylakoid membranes and separation

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if opioid-induced behavioral effects, such as sedation, can be detected using a shuttle box experimental apparatus and whether thermal preference following noxious stimulation using mustard oil is reversed by morphine administration in fish.
METHODS: 5 goldfish (Carassius auratus) underwent 2 randomized blinded experimental trials, with a crossover study design. First, opioid effects were tested in a shuttle box without painful stimulus. Fish were injected 5 days apart with butorphanol at 0.4 or 10 mg/kg, morphine at 5 or 10 mg/kg, or saline IM. After 30 minutes, each f

BACKGROUND: Masked allergens in processed foods are sometimes responsible for "idiopathic" anaphylaxis because of the lack of full ingredient labeling. Patients, even if they are aware of a specific hypersensitivity, may be unaware of trace amounts of the offending allergen(s) that are present in these products.
METHODS: We report a case of severe anaphylaxis to mustard masked in "chicken dips." A 38-year-old woman had an anaphylactic reaction beginning 20 minutes after eating "chicken dips" in a fast food restaurant. She was treated successfully in an emergency room and then referred to us f

Black spot disease is an important disease infected by Alternaria brassicicola, which seriously affects the yield and quality of Brassica juncea. Arachidonic acid (ARA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid, induces the defense response of plants against pathogens. Here, we analyzed the induced resistance effect of ARA against black spot disease, and further revealed the underlying mechanism via physiological and transcriptome analyses. Treatment with 10 μM ARA exhibited the strongest resistance induction, dramatically improving the activities of defense enzymes (laccase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase,

In this study, a model crop plant white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) was treated with an aqueous dispersion of silica-coated CdTe quantum dots (CdTe/SiO2 QDs) in a 72-h short-term toxicity test. The toxicity was established via measurements of (i) the root length and (ii) the chlorophyll fluorescence. These results were compared to two other sources of cadmium, free Cd ions (CdCl2) and prime un-shell nanoparticles CdTe QDs. Tested compounds were applied in concentrations representing 20 and 200 μM Cd. The uptake and translocation of Cd were investigated using inductively coupled plasma optical em

Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.] transgenics overexpressing ATP sulfurylase (APS plants) were shown previously to have higher levels of total thiols, S, and Se. The present study explores the effect of ATP sulfurylase overexpression on tolerance and accumulation of other metals, both oxyanions and cations, reasoning that some anions may react directly with ATP sulfurylase, while other ions may be bound by its thiol end products. The APS transgenics were compared with wild-type plants with respect to tolerance and accumulation of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V, W, and Zn, sup

Very few cases of hypersensitivity due to ingestion of mustard have been described in the literature, although this spice enjoys widespread use. We present three cases of anaphylactic reactions to ingestion of a small amount of mustard sauce. In our patients we performed skin prick tests with mustard and with the rest of the vegetables belonging to the Cruciferae family. We also performed skin prick tests with common pneumoallergens. We measured specific serum IgE to mustard using the CAP System (Pharmacia). Oral challenges with the other vegetables of the Cruciferae family were performed in t

Proteins containing domain of unknown function (DUF) are prevalent in eukaryotic genome. The DUF1216 proteins possess a conserved DUF1216 domain resembling to the mediator protein of Arabidopsis RNA polymerase II transcriptional subunit-like protein. The DUF1216 family are specifically existed in Brassicaceae, however, no comprehensive evolutionary analysis of DUF1216 genes have been performed. We performed a first comprehensive genome-wide analysis of DUF1216 proteins in Brassicaceae. Totally 284 DUF1216 genes were identified in 27 Brassicaceae species and classified into four subfamilies on
