A case of Mycobacterium chelonae mediastinitis and acute humoral rejection after heart transplantation.

Mediastinitis is one of the life-threating complications that can occur after cardiac surgery. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no report of mediastinitis caused by Mycobacterium chelonae, which is one of the rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacteria species. As far as we know, our case is the first case describing the curative management for mediastinitis caused by M. chelonae after heart transplantation.

[A Case of Disseminated Cutaneous Mycobacterium chelonae Infection Successfully Improved with Thermal Therapy].

A 54-year-old female with dermatomyositis treated with cyclosporine and methylprednisolone presented with multiple subcutaneous nodules on her upper and lower extremities on December 2011. The number of lesions gradually increased. She had a history of surgical intervention such as debridement, skin graft of right lower leg due to trauma and subsequent bacterial infection on August 2011. Culture from a skin lesion on June 2012 confirmed Mycobacterium chelonae, which was susceptible to clarithromycin (CAM). We started treatment with CAM, imipenem/cilastatin (IPM/CS) and tobramycin (TOB) for 2 w

In vitro bactericidal activity of antibiotic combinations against clinical isolates of Mycobacterium chelonae.

Mycobacterium chelonae is one of the most antibiotic-resistant species of the pathogenic, rapidly-growing mycobacteria. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bactericidal activity of classical and new potential drugs, alone and in combinations, against clinical isolates of Mycobacterium chelonae. Clarithromycin was seen to be the most bactericidal drug. In drug combinations, this compound is most useful with gentamicin, fluoroquinolones, rifampicin, linezolid, other aminoglycosides, doxycyline and carbapenems. The combination of tobramycin with ciprofloxacin or moxifloxacin also exhi

Mycobacterium chelonae infection treated with combined medication and surgical therapy: A case report.

RATIONALE: The misuse of antibiotics and immunosuppressive agents has led to an increase in the incidence of infections caused by opportunistic pathogens, and even rare microbial infections such as Mycobacterium chelonae (MC) have emerged. Currently, there are very few reported cases of MC infection globally, and clinical experience in treating this disease is limited. This case report focuses on the treatment methods for infections caused by this bacterium, aiming to accumulate experience for clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition. PATIENT CONCERNS: This study reports a

Disseminated panniculitis in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) due to Mycobacterium chelonae infection.

A 14-year-old female bottlenose dolphin was diagnosed with mycobacterial panniculitis based on punch biopsy specimens. The necropsy revealed numerous pyogranulomas in the blubber, as well as marked acute multifocal necrosuppurative pneumonia and lymphadenitis. In addition, the animal had marked scoliosis, which had first been noted clinically in the dolphin at about 1 mo of age. The animal had been treated with low-dose dexamethasone for approximately the last 19 mo to reduce perceived discomfort from spondyloarthritis and with the progestational agent altrogenest for approximately 8 yr to pre

Disseminated infection due to Mycobacterium chelonae with scleritis, spondylodiscitis and spinal epidural abscess.

Mycobacteria other than tuberculosis (MOTT) have a low incidence as pathogens in human pathology. The most frequent clinical expression is the disseminated disease in subjects with compromised cellular immunity. Bacteriological characteristics in culture can generate confusion with other pathogens, which delays the appropriate diagnosis and treatment. We present a case of a disseminated infection due to Mycobacterium chelonae with scleritis, spondylodiscitis and spinal epidural abscess in a man with a medical background of cellular immunity deficit induced by therapeutic drugs. The antibiotic

Disseminated Mycobacterium Chelonae infection in an immunocompromised adult: An uncommon etiology of skin infection.

Mycobacterium Chelonae is a rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) that is ubiquitous in the environment and is associated with skin and soft tissue infections (1). Because Mycobacterium Chelonae is an opportunistic infection, it can present as skin abscess, cellulitis, osteomyelitis, pulmonary infection or disseminated infections, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems or underlying lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis or bronchiectasis. M.Chelonae is one of the most pathogenic rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM). Diagnosing RGM and distinguishing it from My

Mycobacterium Chelonae Infection of the Buttocks Secondary to Lipofilling: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Mycobacterium chelonae is a nontuberculous mycobacterium, classified as a Runyon type IV mycobacterium. In relation to humans, it is most commonly associated with tissue trauma or pulmonary infections. The majority of medical reports describe finding M. chelonae in the surgical setting, attributing infection to inadequate sterilization of surgical equipment. Symptoms are often nonspecific and include pain, erythema, and draining subcutaneous nodules and skin lesions. Therefore, the diagnosis of M. chelonae is often difficult to establish without prior suspicion of the disease, but can be confi
