[Mixed infections and inflammatory ophthalmic diseases: clinical and laboratory observations].

UNLABELLED: In recent years, all medical specialists, including ophthalmologists, have been facing the problem of mixed infections. Recurrent inflammation in the anterior and posterior eye segments is often a result of infection by more than one variety of pathogens. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Over the period 2013-2016, 34 patients (14 men and 20 women) with different inflammatory processes in the eye who appeared DNA-positive for mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum) and/or chlamydiae (Chlamydia trachomatis) (PCR testing of tear fluid and/or urine) were followed up. All patient

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis in semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus): microbiological study of clinically affected and unaffected animals with special reference to cervid herpesvirus 2.

BACKGROUND: Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) is one of the most common ocular diseases in ruminants worldwide. In addition to keratitis and conjunctivitis, animals with IKC can develop uveitis, corneal ulcer, and in severe cases, blindness. The bacteria Moraxella spp. has been described as the primary causative agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in cattle (Bos taurus), while Chlamydia spp. and Mycoplasma conjunctivae are considered the main causative agents of IKC in sheep (Ovis aries). Previous studies indicated cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2) as the primary causative age

Conjunctivitis associated with a Mycoplasma-like organism in swine.

A midwestern producer reported high incidence of conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis in a herd of crossbred finishing swine. Complete necropsy was performed on 3 pigs with bilateral mucopurulent conjunctivitis and chemosis; other gross lesions were not seen. Mycoplasma sp was isolated from conjunctival swab specimens obtained from 1 pig; small numbers of streptococci and coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated from conjunctival swab specimens from all 3 pigs. Neither swine influenza virus nor pseudorabies virus was isolated from conjunctival swab specimens. Histologically, the 3 pig

Sanitary Emergencies at the Wild/Domestic Caprines Interface in Europe.

Population density and distribution of the four native European wild Caprines (Rupicapra rupicapra, Rupicapra pyrenaica, Capra ibex, Capra pyrenaica) have increased in recent decades. The improved conservation status of this valuable wildlife, while a welcome event in general terms, is at the same time a matter of concern since, intuitively, frequent and tighter contacts with sympatric livestock imply a greater risk of cross-transmission of emerging and re-emerging pathogens, and offer unexpected opportunities for pathogens to spread, persist and evolve. This article recalls the transmissible

Urethral inflammation in male chimpanzees caused by ureaplasmas and Chlamydia trachomatis.

Specimens from men with acute non-gonococcal urethritis were tested to determine their microbial content and then given intra-urethrally to male chimpanzees. Two animals received ureaplasmas only and one became infected. The second did so when given a different strain. Both developed a polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) response. Two chimpanzees received a mixture of ureaplasmas and Chlamydia trachomatis and there was a suggestion that the ureaplasmas delayed or suppressed the chlamydial response. The latter, that is urethral infection with a pronounced PMNL response, was most clearly seen in

Cicatricial pemphigoid and erythema multiforme.

Cicatricial pemphigoid (CP) and erythema multiforme (EM) are bullous diseases that involve the skin and mucous membranes including the conjunctiva. Of all the bullous diseases, CP and EM not only involve the conjunctiva most frequently but also cause the most severe conjunctival disease. A chronic, progressive disease, CP is characterized by shrinkage of the conjunctiva, symblepharon, entropion, trichiasis, dry eye, and finally reduced vision from corneal opacification. It is primarily a disease of the elderly that affects more women than men and is characterized by blisters or bullae in a sub

Experimental reproduction of Mycoplasma gallisepticum disease in chukar partridges (Alectoris graeca).

An outbreak of conjunctivitis and severe respiratory disease occurred in an integrated chukar partridge (Alectoris graeca) operation that involved about 8000 birds. The main clinical features were conjunctivitis and sinusitis and frequent mouth breathing, but almost no gasping or coughing. In 1000 breeders, egg production declined from 73% to 20%. Morbidity reached 100%, and losses from mortality and culling approached 60%. At necropsy, a conjunctivitis (often bilateral) and extensive caseated sinusitis were common. There was an occasional slight mucoid tracheitis, but no significant air sac l

Field investigation of Mycoplasma gallisepticum infections in house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) eggs and nestlings.

We conducted a field study to investigate the occurrence of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) in eggs and nestlings from nests of house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus). Forty-three nests were located between the months of April and August 1998 and were followed with one to three sampling efforts. Vitelline membrane of fresh eggs, whole embryos, or swabs from the choanal cleft or conjunctiva of nestlings were inoculated into mycoplasma broth for MG isolation and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. No isolation of MG was made from 39 eggs or 110 nestlings sampled during the study. Pooled choanal

Outbreaks of infectious keratoconjunctivitis in alpine chamois and ibex in Switzerland between 2001 and 2003.

Five outbreaks of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (ikc) affecting alpine chamois and ibex in the western and central Swiss Alps were recorded in 2001 to 2003. Mycoplasma conjunctivae was identified from conjunctival swabs by means of a nested pcr in 27 of the 28 chamois tested. The outbreaks occurred in an area covering 1590 km(2). Deep valleys acted as a barrier to the spread of the disease. A total of 409 chamois and 33 ibex with clinical signs of ikc were reported. Most of the chamois were shot, primarily because they were blind or in poor general body condition. Almost a quarter were obser

Host Prior Exposure Augments Gene Expression Heterogeneity of Both Host and Pathogen During In Vivo Infection.

Variability in acquired protection, whether from prior infection or vaccination, helps drive inter-individual level variation in disease traits. It remains unclear, however, whether this extends to the within-host regulatory environment and what the consequences are for reinfecting pathogens. Here, we asked whether prior pathogen exposure of hosts induces gene expression heterogeneity in host and/or pathogen during infection. We quantified gene expression in vivo following a high-dose challenge of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus) previously given controlled, varied exposures to a bacterial

Potential pathogens carried by Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) in southern Spain.

The Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) population of southern Spain was surveyed for potential pathogens associated with the conjunctiva, external ear canal, as well as reproductive and upper respiratory tracts. We sampled 321 ibex (131 adult males, 100 adult females, and 90 yearlings); these included 271 apparently healthy animals and 50 that were naturally infected with Sarcoptes scabiei. A total of 688 bacterial isolates were identified (377 gram-negatives, 225 gram-positives, and 86 Mycoplasma spp.); sex, age, location, infection with S. scabiei, and disposition of the animal (free-r

Occurrence of keratoconjunctivitis apparently caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum in layer chickens.

Natural cases of keratoconjunctivitis, apparently caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), in layer chickens are described. The disease occurred in a commercial flock consisting of 36,000 pullets (Babcock), first appearing around 30 days of age. Clinically, affected chickens showed unilateral or bilateral swelling of the facial skin and the eyelids, increased lacrimation, congestion of conjunctival vessels, and respiratory rales. Some of the severely affected chickens closed their eyes. The morbidity reached 27.8%, and it was estimated that approximately 10% died from reduced feed intake due t

Host prior exposure augments heterogeneity in gene expression in both host and pathogen during in vivo infection.

Variability in acquired protection, whether from prior pathogen exposure or vaccination, is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of host population-level variation in disease traits. It remains unclear whether this extends to the within-host physiological environment and what the consequences are for reinfecting pathogens. Here, we asked whether prior pathogen exposure of hosts induces gene expression heterogeneity in the host and/or pathogen during infection. The influence of host tissue on M. gallisepticum vlhA gene expression.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum, a significant poultry pathogen, has evolved rapidly in its new passerine host since its first reported isolation from house finches in the US in 1994. In poultry, M. gallisepticum infects the upper respiratory tract, causing tracheal mucosal thickening and inflammation, in addition to inflammation of the reproductive tract. However, in house finches M. gallisepticum primarily causes inflammation of the conjunctiva. Given that different tissues are primarily affected by the same pathogen in different hosts, we have compared the early changes in gene expression of the p

A Comparative Study on the Impact of FIV and FeLV Infection on the Ocular Microbiota in Persian Cats: Insights From Co-Infection and Single Infections.

BACKGROUND: The ocular microbiome of cats infected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) or feline leukemia virus (FeLV) might differ from that of healthy cats. This study aimed to examine and compare the conjunctival bacterial and fungal flora in these groups. METHODS: Bacterial and fungal cultures were conducted from the conjunctiva of 80 Persian cats, categorized into four groups: normal, FIV-infected, FeLV-infected, and co-infected with both FIV and FeLV. PCR assays confirmed the presence of FIV, FeLV, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma. The microbiological analysis was compared across the diff

Frequency of different human mollicutes species in the mucosa of the oropharynx, conjunctiva, and genitalia of free-ranging and captive capuchin monkeys (Cebus spp.).

This study is the first to evaluate the occurrence of several Mollicutes species in Brazilian capuchin monkeys (Cebus spp.). Mollicutes were detected by culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in samples of the oropharyngeal, conjuctiva, and genital mucosae of 58 monkeys. In the oropharynx, Mollicutes in general (generic PCR to the Class), and those of the genus Ureaplasma (genus PCR), were detected in 72.4% and 43.0% of the samples, respectively. The identified species in this site included: Mycoplasma arginini (43.1%), M. salivarium (41.4%), and M. pneumoniae (19.0%). Both Ureaplasma and
