Hypertension is asymptomatic until late stages of pathogenesis, rendering an effective means of detection for early diagnosis essential. The current method of diagnosing hypertension requires two or more sphygmomanometric readings over two or more office visits, which potentially hinders early detection. Though retinopathy is an indicator of vascular damage, it generally presents in later stages of hypertension. Previous and related studies have suggested that the microvasculature in the bulbar conjunctiva may be a sensitive site to assess vasculopathy. Conjunctival microangiopathy was assesse

Eye drops used for diagnostic mydriasis may produce systemic side effects in preterm infants. Studies on the pupil dilating and systemic effect of various mydriatic agents yielded conflicting results. We conducted a prospective randomized double-blind study on the systemic effect of two mydriatic eye-drop combinations. Thirty-nine preterm infants were randomly assigned to two groups. An eye-drop combination of 2.5% phenylephrine and 0.5% tropicamide (group D) was compared with the combination of 0.5% cyclopentolate and 0.5% tropicamide (group F). Either eye-drop combination was followed by 0.5

PURPOSE: To assess retinal and choroidal changes following rapid mydriasis in healthy adults.
METHODS: Seventy-one volunteers (71 right eyes) participated in a prospective randomised controlled trial. They were divided into two groups: tropicamide (n=36) and a mixture (tropicamide:phenylephrine=1:1, n=35) groups. Ophthalmic examinations included visual acuity, intraocular pressure and axial length measurements. Ultra-widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography was used to assess retinal and choroidal parameters before and after mydriasis. This technique covers a 24×20 mm²

We studied the effects of multiple dosing and pre-instilled mydriatics (0.5% tropicamide and 0.5% phenylephrine) on the intraocular concentration and anti-inflammatory action of topical 0.1% pranoprofen (PPF) in rabbit eyes. PPF was applied in a single or multiple doses: 1 to 4 times consecutively at 5-minute intervals with or without pre-instilled mydriatics. PPF concentrations in the aqueous humor increased dose-dependently. The PPF concentrations also increased dose-dependently, and reached the maximal concentration by instillation 3 times in the presence of pre-instilled mydriatics, and th

The authors studied a mechanism of an increase in intraocular concentration of topical 0.1% pranoprofen (PPF) induced by pre-instilled mydriatics (0.5% tropicamide and 0.5% phenylephrine) in rabbit eyes. Ingredient solutions of mydriatics were instilled 60 minutes prior to instillation of PPF. The PPF concentrations in the cornea, aqueous humor and iris-ciliary body did not increase with pre-instilled benzalkonium chloride, chlorobutanol and tropicamide. The PPF concentrations were increased by pre-instilled phenylephrine (PHE), and the concentrations were 2 to 3 times higher than those withou

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable vision loss, yet access to retinal screening remains limited in low-resource settings such as Liberia. This study evaluated the real-world diagnostic performance of an offline artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled smartphone-based non-mydriatic fundus camera for detecting referable diabetic retinopathy in a routine general outpatient screening setting in Liberia.
METHODS: This prospective study was conducted at the General Outpatient Department of John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Monrovia, Liberia. Adults aged 18 years an

The present study demonstrated that less than three days of exposure to low levels of normally cycled ambient illumination are sufficient to cause death to photoreceptor cells in adult pigmented and albino rat. Cyclic light levels as low as 133 and 320 lux were found to destroy photoreceptor cells. A single mydriatic treatment with atropine immediately preceding the three-day exposure was sufficient to permit the effect in pigmented rats. No mydriasis was required for albino rats. When pigmented rats were reared in either 3 lux or 100 lux, it was found that these different light histories did

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hundreds, if not thousands, of non-mydriatic fundus images are acquired in primary care offices daily and uploaded for remote grading by ophthalmologists, retina specialists, and/or artificial intelligence. No prior studies of this magnitude have explored the yield of sight-threatening pathology identified on these platforms. The goal of this study is to report on the prevalence of potentially sight-threatening pathology during a 9-year experience with a single national telemedicine platform.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a multicenter, non-interventional, non-maske
