Intraosseous Myofibroma of the Mandible in a Pediatric Patient: Comprehensive Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and Immunohistochemical Characterization.

Intraosseous myofibroma of the mandible is a benign myofibroblastic neoplasm with limited documentation in the pediatric population. This case report outlines the presentation of a nine-year-old girl with a history of swelling and pain involving the lower left side of the face for two months. Examination revealed a mass originating from the posterior part of the mandible, and radiographic evaluation with panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed a well-defined unilocular radiolucency with three-dimensional cortical expansion. Pathological examination revealed the

Clinico-pathologic correlations of myofibroblastic tumors of the oral cavity. II. Myofibroma and myofibromatosis of the oral soft tissues.

BACKGROUND: Myofibroma is a solitary benign tumor of myofibroblasts. Myofibromatosis describes multiple, simultaneous myofibromas at different sites in various organs. The clinico-pathologic correlations of myofibroma/myofibromatosis confined only to oral soft tissues were analyzed. METHODS: In the English language literature, 41 myofibroma and 12 myofibromatosis cases involving the oral soft tissues were found. From our files, three new myofibroma cases were added. RESULTS: Age at time of diagnosis of oral mucosa myofibroma ranged from birth to 70 years (mean 21.7 years), considerably highe

Post-surgical thyroid bed myofibroma simulating a recurrent papillary thyroid carcinoma: A case report and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Myofibromas are rare benign spindle cell tumors of the soft tissue, bone, or internal organs that occur at any age. Here, we report a post-surgical thyroid bed myofibroma that mimicked a papillary thyroid carcinoma. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 56-year-old male presented with a mass in the thyroid surgical bed, detected 3 years post thyroidectomy following papillary carcinoma. DIAGNOSIS: Thyroid ultrasonography revealed a well-defined, lobulated, hypoechoic, solid nodule, with large rod-like echogenic foci in the thyroid surgical bed. The development of a postoperative suture granuloma was

Genetic variant of SRF-rearranged myofibroma with a misleading nuclear expression of STAT6 and STAT6 involvement as 3' fusion partner.

Pediatric neoplasms with a myofibroblastic differentiation are frequent in children, in particular myofibroma. Recently, a novel deep soft tissue myofibroblastic neoplasm has been described with high cellularity, a smooth muscle phenotype and SRF-RELA fusion. We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with a tumor of the deep soft tissue of the arm, with overlapping histological features with the recently described SRF-RELA group of myofibromas but differing by the presence of calcifications, a novel SRF-STAT6 fusion transcript and nuclear expression of STAT6. No local recurrence no

Transcatheter management of mid-aortic syndrome secondary to myofibroma presenting in infancy with severe left ventricular dysfunction: a case report.

In this study, we summarise a case of a myofibroma causing mid-aortic syndrome due to obstruction of the distal thoracic and abdominal aorta leading to severe left ventricular dysfunction. The patient was managed with percutaneous intervention via balloon dilation and stent placement. On follow-up, the patient has normalisation of ventricular function, is off anti-hypertensives, and is being monitored for re-stenosis.

Recurrent SRF-RELA Fusions Define a Novel Subset of Cellular Myofibroma/Myopericytoma: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall With Sarcomas With Myogenic Differentiation.

Cellular myofibroblastic tumors other than desmoid-type fibromatosis are often diagnostically challenging due to their relative rarity, lack of known genetic abnormalities, and expression of muscle markers which may be confused with sarcomas with myogenic differentiation. In this study we investigate the molecular alterations of a group of cellular myofibroblastic lesions with in the myofibroma and myopericytoma spectrum for better subclassification. Two index cases were studied by paired-end RNA sequencing for potential fusion gene discovery. One chest wall soft tissue tumor in a 3-month-old

Novel NOTCH3 alteration expanding the molecular spectrum of pericytic tumours: report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION: Myofibromas are part of the pericytic tumour family, which includes myopericytomas, glomus tumours and angioleiomyomas. While they typically display benign behaviour when arising in the skin and subcutaneous tissues of the head and neck, rare aggressive variants have been reported, particularly those with visceral or intracranial involvement. The most frequently identified molecular alterations in myofibromas are PDGFRB gain-of-function mutations, primarily single-nucleotide substitutions. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report two cases of myofibroma: one aggressive case with cen

PDGFRB and NOTCH3 Mutations are Detectable in a Wider Range of Pericytic Tumors, Including Myopericytomas, Angioleiomyomas, Glomus Tumors, and Their Combined Tumors.

Pericytic tumors are subclassified as myopericytomas, myofibromas, angioleiomyomas, and glomus tumors according to the current World Health Organization classification. These pericytic tumors form a continuous morphologic spectrum, including those with combined morphology. However, to our knowledge, no widely accepted criteria for classifying tumors with combined morphology are available. Recent studies have identified platelet-derived growth factor receptor-beta (PDGFRB) gene mutations in a subset of myofibromas, myopericytomas, and myopericytomatoses but not in angioleiomyomas. NOTCH recepto

Pediatric Subcutaneous Scalp Mass: A Case Report and Review.

Infantile myofibroma is a unique fibrous tumor encountered in the head and neck. Although the majority of cases are solitary nodules that require only conservative management, awareness of the possibility of multicentric disease is important considering its substantial morbidity. A 3-month-old girl presenting with an enlarging 2.5-cm firm, mobile, nontender subcutaneous scalp mass was evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging and biopsy, revealing a diagnosis of infantile myofibroma. The literature was reviewed for supporting evidence of recommended management in a disease with no official tre

Oral spindle cell neoplasms: a review of 307 cases.

The infrequent exposure of pathologists to soft tissue spindle cell neoplasms coupled with overlapping histologic patterns can often make diagnosis challenging. We reviewed all nonodontogenic spindle cell neoplasms seen between 1982 and 2002 (86,162 total accessions). Diagnoses were reclassified according to current standards supplemented with immunohistochemistry. Of the 307 neoplasms reviewed (0.36% of total accessions), neural tumors were the most common benign entities, accounting for 21% of total cases. Kaposi's sarcoma was the most common malignancy, accounting for 67% of all cases. Diag

Infantile myofibromatosis with orbital involvement: a case presentation and review of the literature.

Infantile myofibromatosis is a rare fibrous tumor that typically presents during infancy or early childhood. We describe a 4-year-old boy with a history of multicentric infantile myofibromatosis who presented with new-onset right-sided proptosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated an expansile intracranial lesion arising from the greater wing of the sphenoid bone, producing mass effect at the right orbital apex and compressing the optic nerve. Histopathologic examination of a biopsy specimen confirmed a myofibroma with associated reactive bone changes. Over a 36-month follow-up peri

A rare case of neonatal colonic obstruction caused by a solitary intestinal tumor.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal obstruction caused by a tumor is very rare in newborns, and the preoperative diagnosis is difficult. We herein report a rare case of neonatal colonic obstruction due to solitary intestinal myofibroma with characteristic findings on gastrografin enema and the surgical strategy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-day-old female infant presented to our neonatal intensive-care unit with abdominal distention and bilious vomiting after feeding. A gastrografin enema showed that the transverse colon near the hepatic flexure was not delineated at the oral side. When pressure was applied, a

Novel SRF-ICA1L Fusions in Cellular Myoid Neoplasms With Potential For Malignant Behavior.

Pericytic tumors comprise a histologic continuum of neoplasms with perivascular myoid differentiation, which includes glomus tumors, myopericytoma, myofibroma, and angioleiomyoma. Despite their morphologic overlap, recent data suggest a dichotomy in their genetic signatures, including recurrent NOTCH gene fusions in glomus tumors and PDGFRB mutations in myofibromas and myopericytomas. Moreover, SRF-RELA fusions have been described in a subset of cellular variants of myofibroma and myopericytoma showing myogenic differentiation. Triggered by an index case of an unclassified cellular myoid tumor

The pericyte antigen RGS5 in perivascular soft tissue tumors.

Perivascular soft tissue tumors are relatively uncommon neoplasms of unclear lineage of differentiation, although most are presumed to originate from or differentiate to pericytes or a modified perivascular cell. Among these, glomus tumor, myopericytoma, and angioleiomyoma share a spectrum of histologic findings and a perivascular growth pattern. In contrast, solitary fibrous tumor was once hypothesized to have pericytic differentiation--although little bona fide evidence of pericytic differentiation exists. Likewise the perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) family shares a perivascular
