A clinical comparison of outpatient and standard myringoplasty.

This prospective study compared the surgical outcomes of 35 patients who underwent myringoplasty--16 who were treated as outpatients and 19 who were admitted as inpatients. The outpatient technique involved a free skin graft, with the temporalis fascia placed as an underlay graft. The inpatients underwent the standard myringoplasty procedure. Postoperatively, 14 of the 16 outpatients (87.5%) and 17 of the 19 inpatients (89.5%) were completely healed within 2 weeks. The results of this study indicate that outpatient myringoplasty with a free skin graft is as safe and effective as standard myrin

Myringoplasty: a simple procedure for out-patients.

The standard treatment of tympanic membrane perforation is myringoplasty. We describe a new myringoplasty technique requiring only a partial removal of skin on the ear drum remnant followed by lateral placing of fascia and free skin graft. The overall cure rate in our series is 97 per cent. The hearing gains for the overall cases are 13.9 dB (p < 0.001) for the AC, 13.6 dB (p < 0.001) for the air bone gap closure, 13.1 dB (p < 0.001) for the SRT and 4.2 per cent (p = 0.005) for the SDS. Minor complications are observed in only 14 per cent. Our technique is simple, effective and can be performe

Comparison of the clinical outcome of endoscopic push-through myringoplasty and microscopic overlay myringoplasty: matching co-variated designs.

BACKGROUND: The conventional microscopic overlayer myringoplasty is preferred because it allows a both hands technique, not reducing middle ear space, increasing the blood supply in the repaired area, and providing graft support; however, this technique may be troublesome for the novice surgeon during tympanomeatal flap elevation. Recently, the endoscopic push-through myringoplasty technique has developed. It provides better visualization of the hidden areas and does not require raising tympanomeatal flap. Therefore, the comparison of clinical outcomes between endoscopic push-through myringopl

Myringoplasty: A comparison of inlay and underlay techniques.

PURPOSE: Myringoplasty aims to improve hearing and prevent otorrhea, making graft uptake rates and hearing crucial considerations. This study analyzed the factors associated with unsuccessful graft uptake and hearing improvement to guide the selection of optimal surgical approaches for myringoplasty. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 56 ears with chronic otitis media. All patients were followed up for >6 months after tympanic membrane closure surgery. We compared the underlay method using the transcanal approach with the inlay method using the retroauricular approach for myringoplasty in p

Feasibility and advantages of transcanal endoscopic myringoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: When performing transcanal myringoplasty under a microscope, the total circumference of the perforation can be difficult to confirm in patients where the external ear canal is narrow and/or protruded. In such patients, a retroauricular incision approach is usually used. However, we have developed a transcanal endoscopic myringoplasty procedure, and the microscopic and endoscopic views are compared herein for the first time. The feasibility and advantages of transcanal endoscopic myringoplasty were examined. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective case series. SETTING: Tertiary referral center

Anaesthetic management of an unusual complication of myringoplasty.

A young male patient was undergoing myringoplasty for right ear chronic suppurative otitis media. While drilling in the middle ear cavity, duramater was breached accidentally. Surgeons were, however, allowed to complete the procedure. Keeping the seriousness of such a complication in mind, an urgent neurosurgical intervention was sought and noncontrast computed tomography head scan was done to analyse the extent of the injury. Osteoplastic craniotomy had to be performed subsequently to evacuate the contusional haematoma over the right temporoparietal region. Throughout the procedure, patient's

Myringoplasty results in a district hospital in Botswana.

This was a prospective study to determine the success rate of myringoplasty in a low-resource setting. Myringoplasty was performed on 85 patients and follow-up done for 6 months in order to determine the incidence of closure of the repaired tympanic membrane. The eardrum closure rate at 3 months was 88% and at 6 months 84%. There was a 62% positive change of more than 10 dB in the pure tone averages of air conduction at frequencies 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz and a 24% improvement of less than 10 dB. This compares favourably with results from other studies.

Adipose graft: an original option in myringoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the fat graft as a reconstructive material in myringoplasty. METHOD: In a review of 45 patients conducted between 1993 and 1999, the authors analyzed their patients' outcomes after having myringoplasties with fat graft. Median follow-up was 2.5 years (range, 6 mo-6 yr). RESULTS: We achieved a success rate of 91.1%. Different features of the patient and the tympanic perforation were studied to demonstrate their role in the quality of the surgical closing. A review of the literature was done to compare our results with the results of other series using this type of graft

Myringoplasty in children: anatomical and functional results.

To assess the results of myringoplasty in children and determine the factors influencing post-operative results a retrospective study of the anatomical and functional results of 41 myringoplasties in children was performed, considering only the cases of uncomplicated perforation that did not require ossiculoplasty or mastoidectomy. The overall success rate was 80.5 per cent after a mean follow-up of 39 months. The mean post-operative air conduction threshold significantly improved in the successful cases with a mean audiological improvement of 11 dB (p<0.05). No post-operative sensorineural he

[Myringoplasty in children: a comparison with an adult population].

The indications for myringoplasty in children has always been a controversial subject since many authors feel the high frequency of the phlogistic auricular processes in children constitute an unfavorable prognostic factor to success of the procedure. The authors present the results obtained in 23 patients under 17 years of age who had undergone myringoplasty for simple perforation of the tympanum. In cases of posterior and inferior perforations, surgery was performed using the underlay technique and a transmeatal approach; in all other cases the overlay technique was used with a retroauricula
