Toxic effect of Callistemon viminalis essential oil on the ovary of engorged Rhipicephalus microplus female ticks (Acari: Ixodidae).

Rhipicephalus microplus is the main ectoparasite of cattle and its parasitism can reduce weight gain of hosts, in addition to causing anemia, increasing the risk of myiasis, and resulting in the transmission of Babesia bovis and Anaplasma marginale, among other pathogens. The use of synthetic chemicals plays an important role in controlling these ticks. However, its frequent and indiscriminate use has contributed to the selection of resistant strains, resulting in greater interest in the search for natural-origin products. The shrub Callistemon viminalis (Myrtaceae), also known as weeping bott

The relationship between anthocyanin accumulation and photoprotection in young leaves of two dominant tree species in subtropical forests in different seasons.

Increasing amounts of experimental evidence show that anthocyanins provide physiological protection to plants under stress. However, the difference in photoprotection mediated by anthocyanins and other photoprotective substances in different seasons is still uncertain. To determine the relationship between anthocyanin accumulation and the photoprotective effects in different seasons, Castanopsis chinensis and Acmena acuminatissima, whose anthocyanin accumulation patterns differ in different seasons, were used as materials to explain how plants adapt to different seasons; as such, their physiol

Attraction or Repelling Effects of Commercial Plant Essential Oils on the Synanthropic Cheiracanthium mildei (Araneae: Cheiracanthiidae).

The northern yellow sac spider Cheiracanthium mildei L. Koch, is expanding its range to Central Europe, especially to synanthropic habitats. The spiders become unwanted companions because of the unreasonable fear - arachnophobia, and estetic reason - silk retreats in corners, capturing dust. The most commonly used substances against spiders are pesticides, which are, however, toxic. In our work we tested the attraction or repellence of 15 essential oils (EO) from plants representing eight families to C. mildei. Our research has shown a significant repellent effect of EO from three plants, name

Antimalarial silver and gold nanoparticles: Green synthesis, characterization and in vitro study.

In the present study, we are reporting antimalarial potential of silver (AgNPs) and gold (AuNPs) nanoparticles synthesized by leaf and bark extract of Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston (Myrtaceae). AuNPs and AgNPs obtained by both the extracts were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). NMR and FTIR spectra indicate that the saccharides and phenolics present in the S. jambos extracts were the major contributors responsible for the synthesis and stabilization of NPs.

Ability of eugenol to reduce tongue edema induced by Dieffenbachia picta Schott in mice.

Dieffenbachia picta Schott (Araceae), known in Brazil as "comigo-ninguém-pode" is an ornamental plant with toxic properties. Its juice, when chewed, causes a painful edema of the oral mucous membranes, buccal ulcerations and tongue hypertrophy. This acute inflammation sometimes becomes severe enough to produce glottis obstruction, respiratory compromise and death. Eugenol (4-alil-2-metoxiphenol), the essential oil extracted from Caryophyllus aromaticus (Myrtaceae) is widely used in odontology. In this study, our objective was to standardize, in mice, a measurable methodology for the tongue ede

Checklist of the adventive psyllids (Hemiptera, Psylloidea) of the Hawaiian Islands, including new state records, identification key, and description of a new species of Australopsylla.

In recent years, an increase in baseline arthropod surveys and closer scrutiny of specimens from current and past collections have resulted in a rise of adventive psyllid species discoveries in the Hawaiian Islands. In some cases, the new records reported here may have been known for some time but not officially published in the literature. In other cases, specimens remained unidentified for several years. We provide an updated checklist of the 23 adventive psyllid species in the Hawaiian Islands, including six new state records, and at least one new island record. The majority of recent psyll

Optimization of ketoprofen adsorption from aqueous solutions and simulated effluents using H2SO4 activated Campomanesia guazumifolia bark.

This study used the bark of the forest species Campomanesia guazumifolia modified with H2SO4 to absorb the anti-inflammatory ketoprofen from aqueous solutions. FTIR spectra confirmed that the main bands remained after the chemical treatment, with the appearance of two new bands related to the elongation of the carbonyl group present in hemicellulose. Micrographs confirmed that the surface started to contain a new textural shape after acid activation, having new pores and cavities. The drug adsorption's optimum conditions were obtained by response surface methodology (RSM). The adsorption was f

Chemical Composition and Antifungal Evaluation of Essential Oil From Fresh Leaves of Myrcia spectabilis DC Against Candida spp. and Pichia kudriavzevii.

Fungal species of the genus Candida are commensal in immunocompetent individuals but may become pathogenic under immunosuppressive conditions. Likewise, Pichia kudriavzevii has emerged as an opportunistic yeast associated with nosocomial infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. The increasing resistance to conventional antifungal agents has stimulated the search for alternative therapies, including essential oils. This study investigated the chemical composition and antifungal activity of the essential oil from fresh leaves of Myrcia spectabilis (EOFLMS) against Candida spp. and P

A phenolic-rich extract from Ugni molinae berries reduces abnormal protein aggregation in a cellular model of Huntington's disease.

Accumulation of misfolded proteins in the brain is a common hallmark of most age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Previous studies from our group identified the presence of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in leaves derived from the Chilean berry Ugni molinae (murtilla), in addition to show a potent anti-aggregation activity in models of Alzheimer´s disease. However, possible beneficial effects of berry extracts of murtilla was not investigated. Here we evaluated the efficacy of fruit extracts from different genotypes of Chilean-native U. molinae on reducing protein aggregation u
