Comparison of arsenic resistance in Mediterranean woody shrubs used in restoration activities.

Myrtus communis, Arbutus unedo and Retama sphaerocarpa are Mediterranean shrubs widely used in revegetation of semiarid degraded soils. The aim of this work is to study the resistance of these plants to arsenic under controlled conditions, in order to evaluate their potential use in revegetation and/or phytoremediation of As-polluted soils. R. sphaerocarpa showed higher resistance to As than M. communis or A. unedo according to its higher EC50, P status and P/As molar ratio in both, roots and shoots, and the lower increases in lipid peroxidation and decrease of chlorophyll levels in response t

How do Mediterranean shrub species cope with shade? Ecophysiological response to different light intensities.

Under natural conditions, light exposure for Mediterranean shrubs can be highly variable, especially during cloudy days or under a canopy, and can interfere with other environmental factors such as temperature and water availability. With the aim of decoupling the effect of radiation and temperature from water availability, we conducted an experiment where two perennial and three summer semi-deciduous shrub species were subjected to different levels of irradiation. In order to follow plant responses to light exposure, we measured gas exchange, photosystem II photochemical efficiency, photosynt

Assessing the cytotoxic/genotoxic activity and estrogenic/antiestrogenic potential of essential oils from seven aromatic plants.

Alternative therapies with new drugs are needed because the clinical efficacy of conventional chemotherapy is often reduced due to collateral effects. Many natural products of plant origin, including essential oils (EOs) have proved to be effective in prevention and therapy of several diseases such as bacterial infections, chronic diseases and cancer. In the present study, we investigated some biological activities of EOs extracted from seven plants: Rosmarinus officinalis, Salvia somalensis, Thymus vulgaris, Achillea millefolium, Helichrysum italicum, Pistacia lentiscus, Myrtus communis. In p

Repellent activity against Aedes aegypti and metabolomic profiling of Myrica gale L. essential oils from Irish boglands.

Bog myrtle (Myrica gale L.) is an ethnobotanically significant bogland plant with historic use as an insect repellent. Essential oils, hydro-distilled from bog myrtle leaves and fruits collected from four locations in Ireland, were analysed by GC-MS and tested for repellence against Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito. Contact (arm-in-cage) and spatial (Y-tube olfactometer) repellence assays were used. Commercial essential oils from M. gale, Myrtus communis and Syzygium aromaticum (clove oil) were also tested. The most effective bog myrtle essential oil in both assays was a Clevenger-hydr

Oxidative stability of plant hydroalcoholic extracts assessed by EPR spin trapping under forced ageing conditions: A myrtle case study.

The oxidative stability of myrtle hydroalcoholic extracts was measured, over storage time, with the EPR spin trapping method under forced ageing conditions. The extracts were prepared with 150 and 300 g l-1 of berries and extraction media with ethanol ranging from 60 to 90%. Two radicals were detected: the PBN-1-hydroxyethyl adduct and the tert-butyl aminoxyl radical. A dimensionless parameter (Ω) calculated on the basis of the lag time, the rate of formation and concentration of the radical species was used to estimate the extracts' oxidative stability. Ω was strongly influenced by the extrac

Bioactive Potential of Terpenes from Mediterranean Scrub Plants: A Review.

The Mediterranean ecosystem is characterized by marked seasonality; it is composed of species such as shrublands that are subjected to high levels of water and thermal stress, making these species an important source of secondary metabolites of significant chemical and ecological interest. In this work, 21 plants were selected from the Mediterranean scrub. These abundant and characteristic representations of the ecosystem produce a total of 197 terpenes. The majority of these are monoterpenes (46.70%), followed by sesquiterpenes (38.07%), with a minority of diterpenes (5.53%) and triterpenes (
