Detection of infectious Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and cockles (Cerastoderma edule).

Infective Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts were detected in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and cockles (Cerastoderma edule) from a shellfish-producing region (Gallaecia, northwest Spain, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean) that accounts for the majority of European shellfish production. Shellfish were collected from bay sites with different degrees of organic pollution. Shellfish harboring C. parvum oocysts were recovered only from areas located near the mouths of rivers with a high density of grazing ruminants on their banks. An approximation of the parasite load of shellfish collected in posit

Opioid inhibition of dopamine release from nervous tissue of Mytilus edulis and Octopus bimaculatus.

Morphine and D-Ala2-Met-enkephalin as well as other opioids suppress potassium-stimulated release of 3H-labeled dopamine from neurons tissue of two marine invertebrates, Mytilus edulis and Octopus bimaculatus. Naloxone reverses the inhibitory effects in both species. Potassium-stimulated release of 3H-labeled serotonin is not altered by opioids. It is postulated that opiate receptors and their endogenous effectors play a prominent role in regulation of transmitter release in invertebrates.

Exploring of the immune-related functions of Glucose regulated protein 94 (GRP94) in Mytilus coruscus.

Glucose regulated protein 94 (GRP94) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident member of the heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) family that functions as a molecular chaperone. GRP94 had been identified as an immune-related molecule in bivalves. Nevertheless, the functional role of GRP94 in bivalve immunity remains poorly understood. Here, we identified a novel GRP94 from the mussel Mytilus coruscus, designated McGRP94, which contains a signal peptide and a HSP90 domain. We characterized its sequence features and expression patterns, produced recombinant McGRP94 (rMcGRP94) and a corresponding polycl

Salinity influence on Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to antineoplastic agents: a transcriptomic, biochemical, and histopathological approach.

Nowadays, aquatic species face a variety of environmental risks associated with pharmaceutical consumption. More specifically, the increased number of cancer patients has been accompanied by an increased consumption of antineoplastic drugs, such as ifosfamide (IF) and cyclophosphamide (CP). These drugs have been found in aquatic ecosystems, raising concerns about their impact, especially on estuarine species, as marine waters are the final recipients of continental effluents. Simultaneously, predicted climatic changes, such as salinity shifts, may threaten organisms. Considering this, the pres

Motility of the Labial Palps in Feeding Behavior and its Innervation in the Marine Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis.

The labial palps of bivalves are thought to be involved in suspension feeding. However, the function of their muscular movements and neural regulation are still unclear. In semi-intact preparations of Mytilus, in which one valve was removed, suspended particles were removed from the labial palps following two kinds of compound movements: torsional and rotational. Both of these compound movements are therefore thought to function in rejection during feeding. These movements were observed in reduced preparations of isolated labial palps with intact cerebral ganglia, and were maintained even afte

Changes in metallothionein transcription levels in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to CdTe quantum dots.

Quantum dots (QDs) are a class of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) with several biomedical, industrial and commercial applications. However, their metabolism and detoxification process in aquatic invertebrates and environmental health hazards remain unclear. This study investigate the transcriptional changes of metallothioneins (MTs) isoforms (mt10IIIa and mt20IV) induced by CdTe QDs, in comparison with its dissolved counterpart, in the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Mussels were exposed to CdTe QDs and to the same Cd concentration (10 µg Cd L-1) of dissolved Cd for 14 days and mt tra

Toxicity of copper oxide nanoparticles in the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis: a redox proteomic investigation.

Relatively little is known about the fate and effects of nanomaterials even in relatively simple organisms such as Mytilus edulis. Here, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NP) are shown to induce dose-dependent toxic effects at the biochemical, physiological and tissue levels in the blue mussel. Stable CuO NP suspensions were sized by differential light scattering and nanoparticle tracking analysis to yield average particle diameters of approximately 100 nm. These were administered to M. edulis, at doses of 400, 700 and 1000 ppb. Ingested copper was predominantly located in the gill tissue with s

The effects of organic and inorganic pollutants on intracellular phosphate compounds in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis).

1. The effects of sublethal concentrations of organic and inorganic pollutants on intracellular energy-rich phosphates in blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, were investigated by in vivo 31P-NMR. 2. Formaldehyde (30 and 10 mg/l), phenol, pyridine, mercury and cadmium gave marked reductions in phosphoarginine and, in some cases, the ATP amounts. The reduction in high-energy phosphate was accompanied by an increase in inorganic phosphate in all groups. 3. A "phosphorus index", the product of the ratios between phosphoarginine and inorganic phosphate, and ATP and inorganic phosphate, is suggested, whic

Differential impacts of ocean acidification and alkalinization on shell microstructure and molecular responses in Mytilus edulis.

Anthropogenic CO2 emissions are intensifying ocean acidification (OA), disrupting carbonate chemistry and threatening marine calcifiers such as mussels. Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) has been proposed as a marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) strategy that can also mitigate OA, but its ecological safety for aquaculture species remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the short-term (21 days) responses of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis to OA (pH 7.3) and NaOH-based OAE (pH 9.0) using integrated shell microstructure analysis and transcriptomics. The results showed that while survival ra

Exploring the Impact of Polystyrene Microplastic Beads on Male Gonads of the Marine Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Plastic, with its remarkable versatility and numerous applications, has greatly benefited humanity. However, its extreme resistance to natural degradation means it persists in the environment for long periods, causing global environmental problems. Furthermore, the fragmentation of plastic waste leads to the formation of microplastics (MP), which are minuscule particles that can accumulate in aquatic ecosystems. This poses a threat to marine fauna and, indirectly, to humans, as it also endangers the reproductive health of individuals. This study aimed to investigate the effects of microplastic

The effect of different types of microplastic and acute cadmium exposure on the Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819).

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a pressing issue for both environmental health and the safety of human food sources. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the effects of MPs on Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Lamarck 1819), focusing on the food safety risks associated with MP and cadmium (Cd) exposure in these organisms intended for consumption. The retention of different polymer types of MPs in mussels was specifically evaluated, and the influence of Cd on MP retention across these polymers was investigated. Mussels were exposed to polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (P

Assessing cadmium-based quantum dots effect on the gonads of the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

This study assesses the sex-specific effects induced by CdTe QDs, on the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis in comparison to its dissolved counterpart. A 14 days exposure to CdTe QDs and dissolved Cd was conducted (10 μg Cd L-1), analysing Cd accumulation, oxidative stress, biotransformation, metallothionein and oxidative damage in the gonads. Both Cd forms caused significant antioxidant alterations, whereby QDs were more pro-oxidant, leading to oxidative damage, being females more affected. Overall, biochemical impairments on gonads of M. galloprovincialis demonstrate that the reproducti

Protocol standardization for the detection of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis).

Marine bivalve shellfish are of public health interest because they can accumulate pollutants in their tissues. As they are usually consumed raw or lightly cooked, they are considered to be a possible source of foodborne infections, including giardiosis and cryptosporidiosis. Although data indicating contamination of shellfish with Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts have been published, comparing results from different studies is difficult, as there is no standardized protocol for the detection and quantification of these parasites in mussels, and different researchers have used differe

Changes of polyamine pattern in digestive glands of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis under exposure to cadmium.

Polyamines, in particular spermidine and spermine, have been identified as important antioxidants, highly induced by oxidative stress in a variety of organisms. However, little is known about changes in polyamine content of metal-stressed marine organisms. In the present study, mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were experimentally exposed to 25 μg/L Cd(2+) or 100 μg/L Cd(2+) for up to 15 days. Cd(2+) was progressively accumulated in mussel tissues, leading to a characteristic oxidative-stress status. Free putrescine (PUT) production was noticeably induced in response to Cd(2+) at day 5 and t

Distribution of synthetic organotins and total tin levels in Mytilus galloprovincialis along the Portuguese coast.

Despite the huge amount of literature available on butyltins (BuTs), few studies addressed the environmental levels of phenyltins (PhTs), octyltins (OcTs) and total tin (Sn(T)) in environmental samples. In 2006 a mussel watch survey was developed for the Portuguese coast (total of 29 sampling sites) in order to describe the concentrations of BuTs , PhTs, OcTs and Sn(T) in the whole tissues of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819). BuTs were detected in all analyzed samples accounting, in average, for 98.6% of total organotins (Sigma OTs=BuTs+PhTs+OcTs), and presented highest values in the
