Nairobi sheep disease (NSD), caused by the viral agent NSD virus (NSDV), is a haemorrhagic fever disease affecting and inducing high mortality in sheep and goat populations. NSDV belongs to the genus Orthonairovirus of the Nairoviridae family from the order Bunyavirales. Other viruses circulating in livestock such as Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and Dugbe virus (DUGV) are members of the same genus and are reported to share antigenic features. There are very few available materials to study NSDV infection both in vitro and in vivo. In the present work, we characterised two mon

Ticks of the genus Ixodes are recognized as important vectors of a wide range of viral pathogens with potential implications for public and veterinary health. Recent advances in metagenomic sequencing have uncovered an unprecedented diversity within tick-associated viromes, yet much of the global tick metavirome remains unexplored, particularly in vast and ecologically diverse regions such as Northwestern Russia. In this study, we present a comprehensive metaviromic and phylogenetic characterization of viruses detected in Ixodes persulcatus and Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from five regions

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne disease caused by Nairovirus, of the family Bunyaviridae. This is the first case report of a confirmed CCHF case without laboratory abnormality. A 36-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic with the complaints of fever, chills, myalgia and vomiting. She was living in a CCHF-endemic region and had received a tick bite ten days previously. Her complaints had started five days after the tick bite, and bleeding of the nose and vagen followed. Under laboratory analysis, serum white blood cell (WBC) was 7300/mm3, haemoglobin (Hb)11.9 gr/dL, p

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral zoonosis caused by a Nairovirus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Despite its wide geographical distribution, the epidemiology of CCHF in northern Africa is incompletely understood and its occurrence in Algeria is virtually unknown. The present survey aimed to determine the prevalence of CCHF antibodies and to identify the potential risk factors associated with CCHFV seropositivity among the one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) in southern Algeria. A total of 269 camels selected randomly from slaughterhouses in three

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an infection caused by a tick-borne virus (genus: Nairovirus, family: Bunyaviridae). The most important vector for CCHF is the ixodid tick. Along with tick bite, direct contact with the virus-affected animal is responsible for its spread. Pakistan witnessed its first case of CCHF in 1976 and has been a major victim of CCHF for years, but spikes in cases are seen after Eid-ul-Adha, an Islamic festival involving the sacrifice of cattle. The disease, in particular, is common among butchers, veterinarians, and livestock workers. From the start of this year

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a vector-borne viral disease, widely distributed in different regions of the world. The fever is caused by the CCHF virus (CCHFV), which belongs to the Nairovirus genus and Bunyaviridae family. The virus is clustered in seven genotypes, which are Africa-1, Africa-2, Africa-3, Europe-1, Europe-2, Asia-1 and Asia-2. The virus is highly pathogenic in nature, easily transmissible and has a high case fatality rate of 10-40%. The reservoir and vector of CCHFV are the ticks of the Hyalomma genus. Therefore, the circulation of this virus depends upon the distr

UNLABELLED: A wide range of bacterial pathogens have been identified in ticks, yet the diversity of viruses in ticks is largely unexplored. In the United States, Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, and Ixodes scapularis are among the principal tick species associated with pathogen transmission. We used high-throughput sequencing to characterize the viromes of these tick species and identified the presence of Powassan virus and eight novel viruses. These included the most divergent nairovirus described to date, two new clades of tick-borne phleboviruses, a mononegavirus, and viruses w

The importance of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis-the main European tick-borne diseases-is steadily growing. This fact is due to many different factors including climate changes. However, across Europe many other human pathogenic viruses, bacteria, and parasites are found in ticks. This article gives an overview of tick-borne human pathogenic viruses present in Europe as well as those considered nonpathogenic. It also deals with the various species of vector-competent ticks. Among these ticks, viruses from 6 families encompassing 8 genera and 35 species are found, whereby the

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a severe form of hemorrhagic fever caused by a virus of the genus Nairovirus. The amplifying hosts are various mammal species that remain asymptomatic. Humans are infected by tick bites or contact with animal blood. CCHF has a broad geographic distribution and is endemic in Africa, Asia (in particular the Middle East) and South East Europe. This area has expanded in recent years with two indigenous cases reported in Spain in 2016 and 2018. The incubation period is short with the onset of symptoms in generally less than a week. The initial symptoms are

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has the most extensive geographic range of the medically significant tick-borne viruses, occurring from western China across southern Asia to eastern Europe and South Africa. The causative agent is a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus in the genus Nairovirus, family Bunyaviridae. In published reports, the case fatality rate has generally ranged from 10% to 50%. Sporadic cases and outbreaks of the disease have increased during the past decade across the endemic region. CCHF was first diagnosed in Turkey in 2002, but since then more than 1100 cases h

The prediction of viral zoonosis epidemics has become a major public health issue. A profound understanding of the viral population in key animal species acting as reservoirs represents an important step towards this goal. Bats harbor diverse viruses, some of which are of particular interest because they cause severe human diseases. However, little is known about the diversity of the global population of viruses found in bats (virome). We determined the viral diversity of five different French insectivorous bat species (nine specimens in total) in close contact with humans. Sequence-independen

BACKGROUND: Ticks are the second most significant vector of human pathogens worldwide, with 911 documented species globally and a broad distributed across China. Currently, over 160 tick-borne viruses (TBVs) have been identified, several of which pose substantial threats to human health, such as Dabie bandavirus, Jingmen tick virus, Alongshan virus, Songling virus, Beiji nairovirus, and Langya henipavirus, raising increasing global attention. Despite their significance, the diversity of TBVs in Beijing remains poorly characterized.
METHODS: In this study, we conducted metagenomic sequencing o

The problem of arbovirus infections in Maghreb has been relatively neglected in the pst in spite of a rich diversity of biotopes, the presence of potential reservoirs and vectors, and their position on the flight path of the Palearctic-african bird migration systems, western branch. Moreover, West Nile virus has been isolated from southern Algeria since 1968. From 1979 to 1989, ticks were collected from wild birds, pigeons, bats, rodents, poultry, camels, wild boars, domestic mammals and man, and assayed for viruses. On the whole, 424 ticks were virologically studied from Morocco, 582 from Alg

Tick-borne pathogens are transmitted by tick bites to cause infectious diseases in humans and domestic animals. To anticipate tick-borne disease occurrence, a high resolution understanding of infection risk distribution and its ecological drivers is needed. We aimed to map the spatial distribution of ticks and pathogen-infected ticks in central Hokkaido, Japan. Adult and nymphal ticks were collected with constant effort at 171 sites from 13 May to 26 June 2024, followed by screening tick-borne pathogens and ecological niche modeling. A total of 9,908 ticks were collected and the endemic tick-b

INTRODUCTION: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a serious viral disease caused by a virus of the genus Nairovirus. It is transmitted mainly by ticks and, in some cases, by contact with infected blood or body fluids. CCHF is endemic in several parts of Africa. This study focuses on cases of CCHF in Senegal in 2023, and on the actions implemented to manage the epidemic.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the 2023 CCHF epidemic in Senegal. The Syndrome Sentinel Surveillance Network (4S Network) was used to detect cases. The reference laboratory used ELISA and PCR

Molecular analyses indicate that Turlock virus (TUR, Turlock serogroup) and Boraceia virus (BOR, Anopheles B serogroup) have virion RNA species and polypeptides comparable in size to those of members of the Bunyavirus genus and unlike those of members of the newly defined Phlebovirus, Nairovirus, or Uukuvirus genera (Bunyaviridae). The 11 terminal 3' end nucleotides of the three virion RNA species of both BOR and TUR viruses (HOUCAUCACAUG...) are identical in sequence to the 3' end sequences of the viral RNA species of snowshoe hare (SSH) and La Crosse bunyaviruses (LAC, California serogroup,

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), designated by the WHO as a priority pathogen under its R&D Blueprint for emerging epidemics, poses a major global health threat, yet licensed vaccines or specific antiviral treatments are lacking. As the sole viral enzyme responsible for genome replication and transcription, the CCHFV L protein is a large, multienzymatic protein, but its exceptional size (> 450 kDa) and extensive domain architecture have hindered structural analysis. Here, we present high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy structures of the full-length CCHFV L protein in its apo

Haemaphysalis concinna is a prevalent tick vector in Northeastern China, exhibiting a broad host range and the capacity to transmit over 40 human pathogens. Although numerous virome studies have investigated this tick species in Northeastern China, individual-level viral prevalence, coinfection dynamics, and the host spectra of the harbored pathogenic viruses remain poorly characterized. In this study, we conducted metatranscriptomic sequencing combined with TaqMan-based real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) validation on individual ticks to systematically profile the RNA virome of 112 adult H.

ABSTRACTSeveral nairo-like viruses have been discovered in ticks in recent years, but their relevance to public health remains unknown. Here, we found a patient who had a history of tick bite and suffered from a febrile illness was infected with a previously discovered RNA virus, Beiji nairovirus (BJNV), in the nairo-like virus group of the order Bunyavirales. We isolated the virus by cell culture assay. BJNV could induce cytopathic effects in the baby hamster kidney and human hepatocellular carcinoma cells. Negative-stain electron microscopy revealed enveloped and spherical viral particles, m
