Supramolecular Peptide Nanofiber/PLGA Nanocomposites for Enhancing Pulmonary Drug Delivery.

Effective drug delivery to pulmonary sites will benefit from the design and synthesis of novel drug delivery systems that can overcome various tissue and cellular barriers. Cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) have shown promise for intracellular delivery of various imaging probes and therapeutics. Although CPPs improve delivery efficacy to a certain extent, they still lack the scope of engineering to improve the payload capacity and protect the payload from the physiological environment in drug delivery applications. Inspired by recent advances of CPPs and CPP-functionalized nanoparticles, in thi

Tunneling Atomic Force Microscopy Analysis of Supramolecular Self-Responsive Nanocomposites.

A big step forward for composite application in the sector of structural materials is given by the use of Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) functionalized with hydrogen bonding moieties, such as barbiturate and thymine, to activate self-healing mechanisms and integrate additional functionalities. These materials with multiple healing properties at the same damaged site, imparted by hydrogen bonds, will also have the potential to improve material reliability, extend the service life, reduce replacement costs, and improve product safety. This revolutionary approach is obtained by integrating

Multifunctional silica nanocomposites prime tumoricidal immunity for efficient cancer immunotherapy.

The tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) has been demonstrated to be the main cause of cancer immunotherapy failure in various malignant tumors, due to poor immunogenicity and existence of immunosuppressive factors. Thus, establishing effective treatments for hostile TIME remodeling has considerable potential to enhance immune response rates for durable tumor growth retardation. This study aims to develop a novel nanocomposite, polyethyleneimine-modified dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with microRNA-125a (DMSN-PEI@125a) to synergistically enhance immune response and immunosupp

Nanocomposites drug delivery systems for the healing of bone fractures.

The skeletal system is fundamental for the structure and support of the body consisting of bones, cartilage, and connective tissues. Poor fracture healing is a chief clinical problem leading to disability, extended hospital stays and huge financial liability. Even though most fractures are cured using standard clinical methods, about 10% of fractures are delayed or non-union. Despite decades of progress, the bone-targeted delivery system is still restricted due to the distinctive anatomical bone features. Recently, various novel nanocomposite systems have been designed for the cell-specific ta

Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity of bioactive hydroxyapatite/silver nanocomposites.

Biomaterials are often used in orthopedic surgery like cavity fillings. However, related complications often require long-term systemic antibiotics, device removal, and extended rehabilitation. Hydroxyapatite/silver (HA/Ag) composites have been proposed as implantation biomaterials owing to the osteogenic properties of hydroxyapatite and to the antimicrobial efficiency of silver. Nevertheless, higher silver concentrations induce cytotoxic effects. The aim of this study was to synthesize and characterize HA/Ag nanocomposites that will allow us to use lower concentrations of silver nanoparticles

Sub-ppm Formaldehyde Detection by n-n TiO2@SnO2 Nanocomposites.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is an important indicator of indoor air quality and one of the markers for detecting lung cancer. Both medical and air quality applications require the detection of formaldehyde in the sub-ppm range. Nanocomposites SnO2/TiO2 are promising candidates for HCHO detection, both in dark conditions and under UV illumination. Nanocomposites TiO2@SnO2 were synthesized by ALD method using nanocrystalline SnO2 powder as a substrate for TiO2 layer growth. The microstructure and composition of the samples were characterized by ICP-MS, TEM, XRD and Raman spectroscopy methods. The active

TiO2-SnS2 nanocomposites: solar-active photocatalytic materials for water treatment.

The study is aimed at evaluating TiO2-SnS2 composites as effective solar-active photocatalysts for water treatment. Two strategies for the preparation of TiO2-SnS2 composites were examined: (i) in-situ chemical synthesis followed by immobilization on glass plates and (ii) binding of two components (TiO2 and SnS2) within the immobilization step. The as-prepared TiO2-SnS2 composites and their sole components (TiO2 or SnS2) were inspected for composition, crystallinity, and morphology using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD),

Collagen/gold nanoparticle nanocomposites: A potential skin wound healing biomaterial.

In this study, nanocomposite collagen scaffolds incorporating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared for wound healing applications. Initially, dose (<20 ppm) and size (>20 nm) of AuNPs that were not cytotoxic on HaCat keratinocytes and 3T3 fibroblasts were determined. Both collagen sponges and AuNP-incorporated nanocomposites (CS-Au) were cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (CS-X and CS-AuX). Incorporation of AuNPs into cross-linked scaffolds enhanced their stability against enzymatic degradation and increased the tensile strength. Hydrolytic degradation of CS-Au group was also less than CS af

Solution-Processed Gas Sensors Employing SnO2 Quantum Dot/MWCNT Nanocomposites.

Solution-processed SnO2 colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have emerged as an important new class of gas-sensing materials due to their potential for low-cost and high-throughput fabrication. Here we employed the design strategy based on the synergetic effect from highly sensitive SnO2 CQDs and excellent conductive properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to overcome the transport barrier in CQD gas sensors. The attachment and coverage of SnO2 CQDs on the MWCNT surfaces were achieved by simply mixing the presynthesized SnO2 CQDs and MWCNTs at room temperature. Compared to the pristine Sn

Folic acid modified clay/polymer nanocomposites for selective cell adhesion.

A folic acid (FA) modified poly(epsilon-caprolactone)/clay nanocomposite (PCL/MMT-(CH2CH2OH)2-FA) resulting in selective cell adhesion and proliferation was synthesized and characterized as a cell culture and biosensing platform. For this purpose, first the FA modified clay (MMT-(CH2CH2OH)2-FA) was prepared by treating the organo-modified clay, Cloisite 30B [MMT-(CH2CH2OH)2] with FA in chloroform at 60 °C. Subsequent ring opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone in the presence of tin octoate (Sn(Oct)2) using MMT-(CH2CH2OH)2-FA at 110 °C resulted in the formation of MMT-(CH2CH2OH)2-FA with an

Ceria-based nanocomposites for the enrichment and identification of phosphopeptides.

Nanocomposites are given preference over the individual materials due to the combined properties of the components involved. Ceria has a high efficiency in phosphopeptide enrichment as well as in dephosphorylation. Iron oxide and tin oxide are chosen as counter metal oxides to synthesize the ceria nanocomposites using a co-precipitation method. The nanocomposites are characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Tryptic β-casein digest shows the feasibility of phosphopeptide enrichment by the two nanocomposites. Selectivity studies sho

Magnetoresistive polyaniline/multi-walled carbon nanotube nanocomposites with negative permittivity.

Contrary to the observed positive giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in as-received multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), pure polyaniline (PANI) synthesized with Cr(vi) as oxidant and MWNTs/PANI nanocomposites with ammonium persulfate (APS) as oxidant, a room temperature negative GMR of around -2% was reported in MWNTs/PANI nanocomposites with Cr(vi) as oxidant. Different from a frequency switch of permittivity from negative to positive in MWNTs/PANI nanocomposites with APS as oxidant, unique negative permittivity was observed in MWNTs/PANI nanocomposites with Cr(vi) as oxidant within the measure

Biodegradable shape memory nanocomposites with thermal and magnetic field responsiveness.

Thermal and magnetic field responsive biodegradable shape memory polymer nanocomposite was prepared with Fe3O4 nanoparticles and poly(L-lactides) (PLLA). The magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles with an average size of 9 nm were initially synthesized by co-precipitation method and then followed by surface modification using oleic acid. The TEM and SEM results show that the surface modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles can evenly disperse in chloroform and PLLA polymer matrix. The tensile test results show that the addition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles to a PLLA matrix greatly improved the elastic modulus, tensile st

Cadmium sulfide quantum dot/chitosan nanocomposites for latent fingermark detection.

The detection of latent fingermarks is a challenging task in forensic science. Here we present work using highly photoluminescent cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs) encapsulated in an inexpensive biopolymeric chitosan matrix for latent fingermark detection. Cadmium ions were chelated within the chitosan matrix followed by the rapid addition of sodium sulfide to produce a CdS/chitosan nanocomposite. The average QD size was investigated as a function of precursor concentrations using ultra-violet-vis (UV-vis) spectrophotometry and the QDs were imaged with transmission electron microscopy (

Photo degradation of methyl orange by attapulgite-SnO2-TiO2 nanocomposites.

Photocatalytic removal of methyl orange under ultraviolet radiation has been studied using attapulgite (ATT) composites, which were synthesized by depositing SnO(2)-TiO(2) hybrid oxides on the surface of ATT to form a composite photocatalyst (denoted ATT-SnO(2)-TiO(2)) using an in situ sol-gel technique. Results showed that SnO(2)-TiO(2) nanocomposite particles with average size of about 10nm were loaded successfully on to the surface of ATT fibers and were widely dispersed. Correspondingly, the photocatalytic activity of ATT was improved significantly by loading SnO(2)-TiO(2). The photoactivi

Bioactive M2 exosome hybrid nanocomposites for immune therapy of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disease characterized by persistent oxidative stress and sustained inflammation, affecting approximately 1-8% of the global population, with no curative therapy has been well-established to date. To address this, we developed a bioactive hybrid nanocomposite (Exo-Ce) by chemically conjugating M2 macrophage-derived exosomes with cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNP), which was applied for synergistic and immunomodulatory therapy of psoriasis. This nanohybrid system effectively integrates the natural immunomodulatory properties of exosomes with the reliable ant
