Are there differential relationships between different types of childhood maltreatment and different types of adult personality pathology?

While considerable data support the relationship between childhood trauma and adult personality pathology in general, there is little resear … relationship between sexual abuse and borderline personality traits nor between emotional abuse and narcissistic personality disorder traits. Additionally, there were three unexpected findings: physical abuse was independently and positively associated with narcissistic and paranoid traits and negatively associated with Cluster C traits. These findings can help refine our understa …

Narcissism at the crossroads: phenotypic description of pathological narcissism across clinical theory, social/personality psychology, and psychiatric diagnosis.

This review documents two themes of emphasis found in phenotypic descriptions of pathological narcissism across clinical theory, social/pers … Vulnerability-Sensitivity-Depletion respectively. However, the majority of psychiatric criteria for narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) emphasize expressions of grandiosity. By placing most of the diagnostic emphasis on overt grandiosity, DSM NPD has been limited by po …

Characteristic interpersonal behavior in dependent and avoidant personality disorder can be observed within very short interaction sequences.

We present a behavior observation study of interpersonal behavior in 96 female subjects, who had been screened for the presence of dependent, avoidant, narcissistic and histrionic personality disorder features. Each subject took part in three short role-plays, taken from assertiveness training. Afterwards, both the subject and her role-play partner judged, how assertive the subject had been. Although observation time was very short, dependent and avoidant subjects could be easily identified from their overly submissive behavior in the role-plays. Histrionic and narcissistic subjects did not sh

Paranoia, experiential avoidance, and narcissism as predictors of outcome in residential treatment of borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has suggested that residential treatment may be effective in reducing symptoms in patients with symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study examined whether paranoia, experiential avoidance, and narcissistic personality features predicted response to residential treatment in a cohort of female patients with symptoms of borderline personality disorder. METHOD: Participants were 87 women with borderline personality disorder symptoms who participated in multimodal residential treatment incorporating elements of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Men

The Alleged Epidemic of Social Narcissism: Implications for Nurse Leaders.

Research indicates that narcissistic personality disorder and subclinical narcissism may be reaching epidemic proportions within American society. It is thus probable that nursing administrators will encounter narcissistic behavior among their staff, supervisors, and/or patients and patient family members. It is therefore crucial that nurse leaders understand the causes of narcissism and how narcissistic behaviors might be addressed within health care settings. An awareness of these issues can help decrease the damage that narcissistic behaviors can have on individuals and institutions.

Pathological narcissism and relationship obsessive-compulsive disorder (ROCD) symptoms: Exploring the role of vulnerable narcissism.

OBJECTIVE: Relationship obsessive-compulsive disorder (ROCD) symptoms, which include obsessive preoccupation, doubts, and compulsive behaviors focusing on the suitability of the relationship and/or partner, have been receiving increasing clinical, theoretical, and empirical attention. This clinical variant of OCD is associated with significant functional, personal, and dyadic consequences. ROCD symptoms have also been linked to several cognitive vulnerability factors, such as maladaptive relationship catastrophization. However, little is known about the connection between ROCD symptoms and spe

Gender bias in assessing narcissistic personality: Exploring the utility of the ICD-11 dimensional model.

OBJECTIVES: Narcissistic personality disorder as captured in categorical diagnostic systems (e.g., DSM-5) emphasizes grandiose features more associated with masculine norms and under-emphasizes vulnerable features more associated with femininity. This poses significant implications in diagnostic outcome and clinical treatment in women with narcissistic preoccupations. Research finds that clinicians using the DSM-5 categorical system tend to diagnose vulnerable narcissism in women as other 'feminized' personality disorders (e.g., borderline), but no research has explored gender differences in n…

Examining the Therapeutic Effect of Ceremonial Ayahuasca on Narcissistic Personality and Antagonistic Externalizing in Adults.

Changes in narcissistic traits (e.g., entitlement) following the ceremonial use of ayahuasca were examined across three timepoints (baseline, postretreat, 3-month follow-up) in a sample of 314 adults using self- and informant-report (N = 110) measures. Following ceremonial use of ayahuasca, self-reported changes in narcissism were observed (i.e., decreases in Narcissistic Personality Inventory [NPI] Entitlement-Exploitativeness, increases in NPI Leadership Authority, decreases in a proxy measure of narcissistic personality disorder [NPD]). However, effect size changes were small, results were …

Developing and Validating the Narcissistic Personality Scale (NPS) among Older Thai Adults Using Rasch Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Being older could be stressful, especially among people with narcissistic personality disorders. Nevertheless, the tool is yet to be available among older Thai individuals. The study aimed to develop a tool to detect symptoms of narcissistic personality, and to validate its psychometric properties among older Thai adults. METHODS: The Narcissistic Personality Scale (NPS) was developed based on nine domain symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), consisting of 80 items. The original scale wa…

The interplay among narcissistic vulnerability, interpersonal sensitivity, and metacognitive integration: A network analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) involves disturbances in self-regulation, interpersonal functioning, and personality organization. Although traditionally characterized by grandiosity, contemporary models suggest that grandiose self-states coexist with vulnerable features such as shame, emotional dysregulation, and hypersensitivity to rejection. Recent evidence indicates that metacognitive impairments may underlie both grandiose and vulnerable narcissistic presentations; however, no study has examined how metacognition interacts with personality traits and interpersonal diff…

Personality disorders in dermatology: A review of patient characteristics, associated dermatologic conditions, and pearls for management.

Personality disorders are characterized by "ego-syntonic" maladaptive behaviors that impair functioning. This contribution outlines the relevant characteristics and approach to patients with personality disorders pertaining to the dermatology setting. For patients with Cluster A personality disorders (paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal), it is crucial to avoid being overly contradictory of eccentric beliefs and to take a straightforward, unemotional approach. Cluster B includes antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic personality disorders. Promoting safety and boundaries is param…

Female Narcissism: Assessment, Aetiology, and Behavioural Manifestations.

Despite putative gender differences in the expression of narcissism, prominent theories have virtually dismissed the role of females in the development and manifestation of narcissism. The contention that narcissism is a pathology of the self that may partly differ in males and females is further evident in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The DSM-5 reports that up to 75% of those diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) are men. Such figures suggest that the representation of narcissism as codified in the DSM-5 may only be marginally applicable …

Narcissism and the DSM-5 alternative model of personality disorder.

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Section III alternative model of personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is assessed via required elevations on 2 of 4 Criterion A domains of personality dysfunction (i.e., self-direction, identity, empathy, intimacy) and 2 personality traits (Criterion B: attention seeking and grandiosity). Evidence to date suggests that these 2 traits successfully account for variance in scores in traditionally (i.e., Section II) assessed NPD and grandiose narcissism but leave substantial variance unaccounted f…

Measurement Invariance of the Pathological Narcissism Inventory and Multimethod Examination of Narcissistic Presentations in Community and Clinical Samples.

The Pathological Narcissism Inventory (PNI) is extensively used in recent empirical literature on pathological narcissism. However, most studies using the PNI are community-based, and no studies have used the PNI to investigate narcissistic presentations in personality disordered patients. This study investigates measurement invariance of the PNI in community participants and patients with personality disorders, and examines differences of narcissistic presentations in these samples through a multimethod approach. Results show that the PNI can be used reliably to measure and compare traits of

Reliability and convergence of three concepts of narcissistic personality.

UNTIL recent years, the personality disorders have been relatively unexplored compared to other psychiatric diagnoses. Over 15 years ago, there was little agreement on the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (Perry and Klerman 1978), but efforts to specify the constructs and respective criteria for the borderline diagnosis spurred a plethora of systematic research. The result is that, next to antisocial personality disorder, borderline has become one of the best-documented and validated personality disorders (Perry and Vaillant 1989). One important shift has been that good descriptive

Sense of Emptiness: The Role of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Preoccupied Attachment, Self-Hate, and Burdening Guilt.

The sense of emptiness is still a poorly defined construct in the literature, yet it is frequently reported in individuals with borderline personality disorder, depressive symptoms, and narcissistic personality disorder. This paper aims to replicate those research studies showing that there are significant correlations between emptiness, insecure attachment styles, maladaptive childhood experiences, shame, impulsivity, depression, and borderline and narcissistic personality features. Additionally, it was hypothesized that a significant correlation would exist between the sense of emptiness and…
