Disodium cromoglycate nasal spray in the treatment of perennial rhinitis.

In a double-blind crossover trial, 24 patients with perennial rhinitis have been treated with 2% disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) nasal spray. 15 patients preferred DSCG to placebo, 9 patients showed no preference. Analysis of the diary cards showed a significant preference of DSCG in the group which received placebo first for the symptoms blocking, secretion and sneezing (p less than 0.1), while no preference between the treatment periods occured in the group receiving DSCG first. A significantly higher IgG concentration in serum was found in 15 patients with preference for DSCG than with remaind

Hydrogels-based nasal sprays for nose-to-brain delivery: Formulation strategies, composite systems, and performance optimization.

Nose-to-brain drug delivery has been extensively investigated for central nervous system therapy due to its ability to bypass the blood-brain barrier and reduce systemic exposure. Among available intranasal dosage forms, hydrogels-based nasal sprays have emerged as a promising platform due to their ability to prolong nasal residence and enable controlled drug release. This review, from the perspective of formulation-oriented design of hydrogel nasal sprays, focuses on composite systems, spray performance, and drug specific strategies in addition to material selection. Recent advances highlight

Assessing Nasal Epithelial Dynamics: Impact of the Natural Nasal Cycle on Intranasal Spray Deposition.

This study investigated the intricate dynamics of intranasal spray deposition within nasal models, considering variations in head orientation and stages of the nasal cycle. Employing controlled delivery conditions, we compared the deposition patterns of saline nasal sprays in models representing congestion (N1), normal (N0), and decongestion (P1, P2) during one nasal cycle. The results highlighted the impact of the nasal cycle on spray distribution, with congestion leading to confined deposition and decongestion allowing for broader dispersion of spray droplets and increased sedimentation towa

Anatomically realistic nasal replicas capturing the range of nasal spray drug delivery in adults.

To improve the relationships between commonly conducted in vitro studies for locally-acting nasal spray drug products with in vivo regional deposition, this study developed a set of in vitro adult nasal geometries that captured the range of nasal drug delivery to the region posterior to internal nasal valve (INV), also known as posterior delivery (PD), and evaluated their performance with existing in vivo data. The PD of fluticasone propionate (FP) and fluticasone furoate (FF) in 40 nasal cavities was statistically analyzed to identify three airway models representing the low, mean, and high P

Relief of cough and nasal symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis by mometasone furoate nasal spray.

BACKGROUND: Cough commonly occurs as a symptom of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR), an inflammatory condition of the nasal mucous membranes that results in rhinorrhea, nasal stuffiness/congestion, nasal itching, and sneezing. Mometasone furoate nasal spray (MFNS, Nasonex, Schering, Kenilworth, NJ), an anti-inflammatory nasal corticosteroid, has been shown to be safe and effective in reducing the nasal inflammation of SAR. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of MFNS in relieving SAR-associated cough, in addition to nasal symptoms. METHODS: This was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind

Budesonide aqueous nasal spray: an updated review in managing chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a frequent medical condition. Type 2 inflammation signs CRSwNP in western countries. Type 2 inflammation leads to nasal airflow limitation. Budesonide aqueous nasal spray (BANS) is an intranasal corticosteroid (INCS); it has been launched in the early 1980s. BANS is indicated for treating allergic rhinitis, nonallergic rhinitis, and nasal polyps (both as treatment and prevention after surgery). Consolidated evidence documented its efficacy in treating CRSwNP. In addition, BANS is safe with negligible local and systemic side effects. Recent g

Nasal sprayed particle deposition in a human nasal cavity under different inhalation conditions.

Deposition of polydisperse particles representing nasal spray application in a human nasal cavity was performed under transient breathing profiles of sniffing, constant flow, and breath hold. The LES turbulence model was used to describe the fluid phase. Particles were introduced into the flow field with initial spray conditions, including spray cone angle, insertion angle, and initial velocity. Since nasal spray atomizer design determines the particle conditions, fifteen particle size distributions were used, each defined by a log-normal distribution with a different volume mean diameter (Dv5

A comparative trial of flunisolide and sodium cromoglycate nasal sprays in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis.

A trial of flunisolide nasal spray and sodium cromoglycate nasal spray in the treatment of hay fever was carried out during the summer of 1978. Sixty-seven patients all suffering from grass-pollen hay fever were given either flunisolide or sodium cromoglycate nasal sprays for 7 weeks. Patients were seen at 0, 3 and 7 weeks and they also kept a daily record of symptoms. Overall assessment of symptom control and the patients daily records of sneezing showed flunisolide to be significantly superior to sodium cromoglycate. Patients records of symptoms correlated well with daily pollen counts. Side

Adrenaline nasal spray in emergency management: An initial expert opinion.

Adrenaline is the drug of choice for the treatment of anaphylaxis. Up to now, intramuscular administration using an autoinjector has been recommended in national and international guidelines as the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis. Various adrenaline autoinjectors are available on the German market as emergency medication for immediate treatment by medical laypersons and specialists. Recently, a nasally administered adrenaline preparation was introduced for the first time and is available on the market. There are mainly data on healthy control subjects, which show a good adrenaline level a

Development of neffy, an Epinephrine Nasal Spray, for Severe Allergic Reactions.

Epinephrine autoinjectors (EAIs) are used for the treatment of severe allergic reactions in a community setting; however, their utility is limited by low prescription fulfillment rates, failure to carry, and failure to use due to fear of needles. Given that delayed administration of epinephrine is associated with increased morbidity/mortality, there has been a growing interest in developing needle-free, easy-to-use delivery devices. neffy (epinephrine nasal spray) consists of three Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved components: epinephrine, Intravail A3 (absorption enhancer), and a Un

Effect of nasal beclomethasone spray in the treatment of otitis media with effusion.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobials treatment of Otitis media (OM) reduces some complications, but some of chronic complications, and specially otitis media with effusion (OME), seem to increase. Theoretically the usage of nasal corticosteroid sprays may prevent this problem by reducing the local inflammation around the eustachian tube. So, this study aimed to evaluate the role of nasal corticosteroid spray as an adjuvant for the treatment of OME. METHODS: In a randomized, prospective clinical trial, 2 groups of 46 subjects who had OME were recruited. A questionnaire containing patients' characters, h
