Extraosseous chordoma of nasopharynx in paediatric age.

Intracranial chordomas are relatively rare locally aggressive tumours that probably originate from embryonic remnants of the notochord. They typically arise from the sacrum and secondly in the skull base/clivus region. When skull base chordomas occur at an extraosseous location (without lytic bone destruction), they may mimic other lesions of the nasopharynx. We present a case of primarily extraosseous chordoma in paediatric age, involving the nasopharynx, to improve preoperative diagnosis and postoperative management of this rare tumour.

The nasopharynx in infants with cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to use three-dimensional computed tomography data and computer imaging technology to assess the skeletal components of the naso-pharyngeal area in patients with cleft lip and palate and to quantify anatomical variations. METHODS: CT scans were obtained from 29 patients of Malay origin with cleft lip and palate aged between 0 and 12 months and 12 noncleft patients in the same age group, using a GE Lightspeed Plus Scanner housed in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Measurements were obtained using the 'Persona' three-dimensional software package, devel

[An unusual lesion of the nasopharynx: oncocytic metaplasia].

Oncocytic metaplasia of the nasopharynx is an exceptional lesion which exact etiopathogenesis, although largely discussed, still remains controversial. The purpose of this paper is to present the epidemiological characteristics and clinical signs of this lesion and to study its pathogenesis and its therapeutic modalities. We report two cases that occurred respectively in a 53- and 60-year-old woman. The first presented with pharyngeal dysesthesia and otalgia. The endoscopic examination revealed an irregularity of the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. The second patient presented with tinnitus

Bilateral myoepithelioma of the nasopharynx: a case report.

Myoepithelioma is a rare salivary tumour which is usually encountered in the parotid gland. Outside the parotid, myoepithelioma may arise from minor salivary glands of the hard palate and less frequently in bronchi or breast. In this report we describe the unique case of a metachronous bilateral nasopharyngeal myoepithelioma arising from the tubaric regions. Its microscopic features, immunophenotype, and the differential diagnosis together with a review of literature are discussed.

Parasellar epidermoid cyst rupturing into the nasopharynx.

Epidermoid tumours are non-neoplastic inclusion cysts representing up to 1.1 per cent of all intracranial tumours, typically presenting with symptoms related to pressure or intracranial rupture in the fourth or fifth decade of life. The authors present a case of a parasellar epidermoid cyst which has ruptured in to the nasopharynx; to the best of their knowledge, this has not been previously reported. The computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are presented. The pathology and radiological features of epidermoid tumours are discussed, particularly in relation to extracran

Melanin pigmented oncocytic metaplasia of the nasopharynx.

A case of melanin pigmented oncocytic metaplasia is reported. A 62-year-old man presented with a history of discomfort of the ear of a 2 weeks' duration. Nasoscopic examination revealed a black nodule of about 5mm at the left Eustachian opening, and several black spots were discovered around the bilateral torus tubarius. The nodule was biopsied to determine the histology. Microscopically, there were oncocytic cells with abundant pigmented granules showing glandular pattern. Such a pigmented variant of benign oncocytic lesion is very rare.

Teratocarcinosarcoma of the nose, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx.

Teratomas affecting the head and neck are rare tumours of ambiguous origin. The benign form is seen in children and mostly affects the nasopharynx. Malignant tumours in the upper jaw have been reported rarely. They are almost exclusively seen in the adult male. They are highly aggressive tumours that are difficult to diagnose pre-operatively due to the varied histological patterns. Treatment options available are surgery, radiotherapy or a combination of both. Despite intensive treatment, the prognosis is still poor. A rare case of teratocarcinosarcoma of the nose, paranasal sinuses and nasoph

Paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx CT and MRI.

Neoplastic disease of the nose, paranasal sinuses, the nasopharynx and the parapharyngeal space requires thorough assessment of location and extent in order to plan appropriate treatment. CT allows the deep soft tissue planes to be evaluated and provides a complement to the physical examination. It is especially helpful in regions involving thin bony structures (paranasal sinuses, orbita); here CT performs better than MRI. MRI possesses many advantages over other imaging modalities caused by its excellent tissue contrast. In evaluating regions involving predominantly soft tissue structures (ec

The nasopharynx, eustachian tube and otitis media.

It has been classically hypothesized that a mass in the nasopharynx causes an obstacle to air flow through the eustachian tube, thereby creating a negative pressure in the middle ear followed by an effusion. However, examination of the relevant data concerning the supposed obstruction of the eustachian tube by nasopharyngeal carcinomas, choanal polyps and adenoids does not seem to support this cause and effect relationship. Evidence points to other more sophisticated mechanisms which cause negative pressure and an effusion in pathological middle ear conditions. While the hypothesis of a nasoph

The nasopharynx and under-aeration of the middle-ear.

This study compared nasopharyngeal sepsis with under-aeration ear disease. Nasopharyngeal sepsis was assessed by culture taken directly from the surface of removed adenoid tissue. 156 cases were studied; 100 showed varying degrees of middle-ear under-aeration and 56 had no active ear disease or history of it. In addition, an assessment of post-nasal obstruction was made and this too was compared with middle-ear status. The conclusions suggested that, whilst normal ears can exist in the presence of accepted nasal pathogens, diseased ears are rarely seen in the absence of nasal sepsis. The degre

[Haemophilic bacteria of the nasopharynx of healthy persons].

The study of the species composition of hemophilic bacteria inhabiting the nasopharynx of healthy persons has revealed that H. parainfluenzae is the predominant species (82.0 +/- 4.8%) among these bacteria. The isolation of H. influenzae and H. parahaemolyticus has been found to occur considerably more rarely and in lesser numbers (9.0 +/- 1.5% and 3.8 +/- 1.0%, respectively). These data indicate that H. parainfluenzae should be regarded as the ecological dominant in the nasopharyngeal biocenosis, while H. influenzae and H. parahaemolyticus appear to be transitory microorganisms. Among the stu

Radiologic Evaluation of the Nasopharynx: A Comprehensive Review.

The nasopharynx is a critical component of the upper aerodigestive tract and has essential roles in respiration, auditory tube function, and speech resonance. Accurate imaging evaluation of this region allows assessment of deeper structures that cannot be evaluated by clinical examination alone. A thorough understanding of nasopharyngeal anatomy, embryology, and the spectrum of benign and malignant diseases is vital for accurate diagnosis. Key imaging features may be identified across CT and MRI modalities. Although CT effectively delineates local bone and soft-tissue structures, MRI provides

A Rare Case of Neuroglial Heterotopia of Nasopharynx.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroglial heterotopia (NGH), is a displaced mass of mature central neuroepithelial tissue unconnected to the brain proper. NGH presents mostly with respiratory distress, neck mass and feeding difficulties at early age. CASE REPORT: In our case, the nasopharyngeal NGH, a nine years old female child presented with otalgia and reduced hearing of left ear. Otological examination showed secretory otitis media. On nasal endoscopy solitary, smooth, mucosa covered mass on the eustachian tube opening of left side blocking eustachian tube orifice. Imaging showed a well-defined, non-enhan

Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Nasopharynx.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal malignant tumors were relatively rare head and neck tumors with a low global incidence. There were various pathologic types of nasopharyngeal malignant tumors, and small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNEC) was a highly malignant subtype with rapid growth and early metastasis. SCNEC was rare in the nasopharynx, and its clinical presentation and treatment strategy were different from other types of nasopharyngeal malignancies, posing a challenge to clinicians. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of its diagnosis and treatment was essential. CASE PRESENTATIONS: In Fe

Ectopic Olfactory Neuroblastoma Arising in the Nasopharynx.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is an uncommon malignant tumor typically located in the upper nasal cavity. Olfactory neuroblastoma originating in the nasopharynx is extremely rare and tends to be misdiagnosed. The authors describe a rare case of ONB arising ectopically in the nasopharynx. The patient was a 65-year-old woman with recurrent epistaxis and a feeling of fullness in the right ear. After evaluation, endoscopic surgery was performed. The pathological result proved to be ONB. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging showed that the tumor was completely resected. The patient proceeded to
