Disentangling the relationship between child maltreatment and violent delinquency: using a nationally representative sample.

This study uses the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescents (Add Health) data, a nationally representative sample of adolescents, to disentangle the relationship between child maltreatment and violent delinquency. Also examined are potential moderating effects of gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and religiosity on the association between child maltreatment and violent delinquency. Contrary to prior research findings, the current analyses reveal that physical abuse is not associated with future violent delinquency, whereas sexual abuse and neglect predict violent delinquency significantly

Adapting to the Disconnection: An Examination of School Alienation and Adolescent Gun Carrying.

OBJECTIVE: As school shootings and youth gun violence continue to rise in the United States, it is imperative to identify risk factors linked to gun carrying among adolescents. This study examines the relationship between perceived school alienation and the likelihood of adolescents carrying a gun to school. Specifically, it tests whether school alienation increases adolescent inclination to carry a gun to school. METHODS: This study used an all-male sample from waves I (1994-1995) and II (1996) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) with a final analyti

A prospective longitudinal study of multidomain resilience among youths with and without maltreatment histories.

The majority of children with maltreatment histories do not go on to develop depression in their adolescent and adult years. These individuals are often identified as being "resilient", but this characterization may conceal difficulties that individuals with maltreatment histories might face in their interpersonal relationships, substance use, physical health, and/or socioeconomic outcomes in their later lives. This study examined how adolescents with maltreatment histories who exhibit low levels of depression function in other domains during their adult years. Longitudinal trajectories of dep

Father Involvement, Dating Violence, and Sexual Risk Behaviors Among a National Sample of Adolescent Females.

This study explored the relationship between the involvement of biological fathers and the sexual risk behaviors and dating violence/victimization and/or perpetration of adolescent girls. The data used in this cross-sectional analysis were drawn from the second wave of the public release of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Only adolescents who reported their biological sex as female, reported a history of being sexually active, and reported having a romantic partner in the previous 18 months were selected (N = 879). This study focused on overall positive sexual behaviors a

Who Benefits and How: Five Dimensions of Adolescent Psychological Well-Being and Their Relative Impact on Cardiometabolic Health in Adulthood.

PURPOSE: Positive dimensions of psychological well-being in adolescence may help youth preserve cardiometabolic health (CMH) as they age, but little is known about which aspects of well-being matter most and for whom. This study examines the differential impact of five dimensions of adolescent psychological well-being on CMH maintenance in adulthood and considers social patterning in both their distribution and respective health benefits. METHODS: Data were from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N = 3,464), five dimensions of psychological well-being were identified at bas

Adolescent loneliness and precarious employment in young adulthood: The moderating role of school attachment.

Young adults are increasingly exposed to precarious employment, yet little is known about how early-life social experiences relate to labor-market outcomes in adulthood. Drawing on life-course perspectives, this study examines whether adolescent loneliness is associated with precarious employment in young adulthood and whether school and neighborhood attachment moderate this association. We used longitudinal data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Adolescent loneliness was measured in Wave I, and precarious employment was assessed in young adulthood (Wave IV).

The pathway from childhood maltreatment to adulthood obesity: The role of mediation by adolescent depressive symptoms and BMI.

to examine associations between childhood maltreatment and adulthood obesity, and mediating effects of adolescent depressive symptoms and BMI, using the U.S. National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (n = 10,894). Individuals who reported sexual maltreatment were 27% more likely to be obese (BMI≥30; AOR = 1.27, 95% CI: 0.98-1.63) and 72% more likely to be extremely obese (BMI≥40) in adulthood (AOR = 1.72, 1.18-2.51) than those who did not. Individuals who reported physical maltreatment were 37% more likely to be extremely obese than those who did not (AOR = 1.37, 1.11-1.70). Th

Depressogenic friendship networks in adolescence: longitudinal associations with mental health into adulthood.

PURPOSE: To examine whether adolescents' friends' depressed mood in-school is longitudinally associated with their own mental health from adolescence into adulthood. METHODS: We used data from Waves I-V of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Participants included 10,769 individuals (Mage = 15.6 [SD = 1.7] years at Wave I, 37.6 years [SD = 1.8] at Wave V; 52% girls; 56% Non-Hispanic White). At Wave I, adolescents nominated friends within their school and reported depressed mood frequency. Friends' depressed mood was the average depressed mood score across adolescents

Adolescent Antecedents of Young Adult Homelessness: a Cross-national Path Analysis.

Adolescent and young adult health, development, and behavior lay a foundation for future population health. Increasing rates of young adult homelessness mean there is a need for research which generates evidence to support a stronger focus on population-level prevention. Using longitudinal data from a population-based sample of young adults participating in the cross-nationally matched International Youth Development Study, we examined adolescent antecedents of young adult homelessness in Washington State in the USA and in Victoria, Australia. Participants were surveyed using a modified versio

Adolescent obesity and future substance use: Incorporating the psychosocial context.

A growing body of work has shown that obese adolescents are at risk of engaging in problematic substance use, but mixed findings highlight the complexity of the relationship. Incorporating the psychosocial context into this research may inform past discrepancies. The current study assessed whether obese adolescents had a higher likelihood of experiencing a psychosocial context that predicted problematic substance use in young adulthood. Latent class analysis on 10,637 adolescents from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) identified four psychosocial classe

Correlates of Incarceration of Fathers, Socioeconomic Influences, and Mental Illness.

The United States leads globally in incarceration. Incarceration can disrupt families in both immediate and long-term ways, including finances and mental illness. We examined the relationship between father incarceration during adolescence and the development of mental illness in adulthood as well as the relationship of household assets and debts in relation to the mental illness outcomes. Wave IV data of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were used with a final analytic sample of 2129 participants. Data were analyzed using MANOVA in Stata 13.1. The findings indicate

Men's sexual orientation and suicide: evidence for U.S. adolescent-specific risk.

There is strong consensus in the research literature that adolescent and adult men who report same-sex sexual orientations, identities, and behaviors are at higher risk for suicide. Recent studies of general adolescent suicide risk have identified developmental trajectories that peak during the teenage years. Because the adolescent years are characterized by the development and heightened awareness of gender roles and sexual scripts closely tied to dominant cultural ideals of masculinity and heterosexuality, an adolescent-focused developmental trajectory for suicide risk might be particularly

The COVID-19 pandemic's impact on psychotropic medication prescriptions for children and adolescents: a scoping review of quantitative longitudinal studies.

Global evidence shows a deterioration in the mental health of children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising questions about how mental health care, including psychotropic medication prescriptions, has adapted. However, it remains unclear how this deterioration affected prescription trends. This scoping review examined quantitative longitudinal studies comparing psychotropic drug prescriptions before and during the pandemic. A search of five databases, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO, yielded 14 studies from 11 OECD countries (Austria, Australia, Canada, De

Sleep and delinquency: does the amount of sleep matter?

Sleep, a key indicator of health, has been linked to a variety of indicators of well-being such that people who get an adequate amount generally experience greater well-being. Further, a lack of sleep has been linked to a wide range of negative developmental outcomes, yet sleep has been largely overlooked among researchers interested in adolescent delinquency. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between hours of sleep and delinquent behavior among adolescents by using data from Wave 1 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n = 14,382; 50.2% female, 63.5%
