Low-Coordinated Polysulfide Species on Metal Sulfide Enabled Superior Gaseous Mercury Removal from Natural Gas.

The pursuit of efficient natural gas utilization is inherently linked to thorough purification of its contaminants. Traditional purification techniques, while adept at removing sulfur-containing acid gases (e.g., H2S) and hydrocarbons, have overlooked a critical aspect: the efficient management of mercury, leading to storage tank corrosion and significant safety hazards in gas utilization. In this study, we demonstrate that core-shell ZnS@Sx enriched with low-coordinated polysulfide species, prepared by coating the sulfur shell through the in situ conversion of H2S with additional SO2 on the s

Application of chromium catalysis technology to compound-specific hydrogen isotope analysis of natural gas samples.

An easy-to-use and efficient approach for the catalytic pyrolysis of hydrocarbon gas here is proposed and tested, which allowed the precise measurement of δ2H. This method requires the reaction tube filled with twisted chromium wire, establishing a gas chromatography-Chromium wire/high temperature conversion-isotope ratio mass spectrometer (GC‒Cr/HTC‒IRMS) system. The approach described here has many remarkable advantages over other techniques. In comparison to traditional carbon-coating pyrolysis technique, this proposed method greatly reduces the pyrolysis temperature of the hydrocarbon gas,

[Ecological/hygienic and toxicological evaluation of combustion products of aviation kerosene and liquefied natural gas].

Products of kerosene combustion in the present-day aeroengines contain more than 200 compounds of incomplete combustion, partial oxidation, and thermal decomposition of fuel and oil. Most of these are strong toxicants for humans. Increase of temperature in the turbine engine combustion chamber led to production of very toxic nitrogen oxides. In search for the ecologically safe and less toxic alternative attention of fuel engineers was drawn to liquefied natural gas which compares well and even excels kerosene in ecological, economic and many other respects.

Highly Connected Stable Metal-Organic Frameworks With Polyhedral Cage-Like Cavities for Natural Gas Upgrading.

The development of efficient methane (CH4) separation and purification technologies is essential for optimizing the efficiency of natural gas. Compared to conventional cryogenic distillation, adsorptive separation using porous materials offers significant advantages in terms of energy efficiency and operational simplicity. The construction of highly connected cage-like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provides suitable pore volume and functional space to enhance both adsorption capacity and selectivity, although their design and synthesis remain challenging. In this work, four MOFs featuring po

Microbial community structure in deep natural gas-bearing aquifers subjected to sulfate-containing fluid injection.

In the natural gas field located in central Japan, high concentrations of natural gases and iodide ions are dissolved in formation water and commercially produced in deep aquifers. In the iodine recovery process, the produced formation water is amended with sulfate, and this fluid is injected into gas-bearing aquifers, which may lead to infrastructure corrosion by hydrogen sulfide. In this study, we examined the microbial community in aquifers subjected to sulfate-containing fluid injection. Formation water samples were collected from production wells located at different distances from the in

The association between natural gas well activity and specific congenital anomalies in Oklahoma, 1997-2009.

BACKGROUND: Natural gas drilling may pose multiple health risks, including congenital anomalies, through air pollutant emissions and contaminated water. Two recent studies have evaluated the relationship between natural gas activity and congenital anomalies, with both observing a positive relationship. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate whether residence near natural gas wells is associated with critical congenital heart defects (CCHD), neural tube defects (NTD), and oral clefts in Oklahoma, the third highest natural gas producing state in the US. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort s

Gaseous emissions from compressed natural gas buses in urban road and highway tests in China.

The natural gas vehicle market is rapidly developing throughout the world, and the majority of such vehicles operate on compressed natural gas (CNG). However, most studies on the emission characteristics of CNG vehicles rely on laboratory chassis dynamometer measurements, which do not accurately represent actual road driving conditions. To further investigate the emission characteristics of CNG vehicles, two CNG city buses and two CNG coaches were tested on public urban roads and highway sections. Our results show that when speeds of 0-10km/hr were increased to 10-20km/hr, the CO2, CO, nitroge

Estimating the health benefits from natural gas use in transport and heating in Santiago, Chile.

Chilean law requires the assessment of air pollution control strategies for their costs and benefits. Here we employ an online weather and chemical transport model, WRF-Chem, and a gridded population density map, LANDSCAN, to estimate changes in fine particle pollution exposure, health benefits, and economic valuation for two emission reduction strategies based on increasing the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) in Santiago, Chile. The first scenario, switching to a CNG public transportation system, would reduce urban PM2.5 emissions by 229 t/year. The second scenario would reduce wood burni

Impact of oxidation catalysts on exhaust NO2/NOx ratio from lean-burn natural gas engines.

Oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emitted from internal combustion engines are composed primarily of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Exhaust from most combustion sources contains NOx composed primarily of NO. There are two important scenarios specific to lean-burn natural gas engines in which the NO2/NOx ratio can be significant: (1) when the engine is operated at ultralean conditions and (2) when an oxidation catalyst is used. Large NO2/NOx ratios may result in additional uncertainty in NOx emissions measurements because the most common technique (chemiluminescence) was developed for low

Unregulated emissions from compressed natural gas (CNG) transit buses configured with and without oxidation catalyst.

The unregulated emissions from two in-use heavy-duty transit buses fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) and equipped with oxidation catalyst (OxiCat) control were evaluated. We tested emissions from a transit bus powered by a 2001 Cummins Westport C Gas Plus 8.3-L engine (CWest), which meets the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) 2002 optional NOx standard (2.0 g/bhp-hr). In California, this engine is certified only with an OxiCat, so our study did not include emissions testing without it. We also tested a 2000 New Flyer 40-passenger low-floor bus powered by a Detroit Diesel series 50G

Selective monitoring of natural gas sulphur-based odorant mixture of t-butyl mercaptan and methyl ethyl sulphide using an array of microfluidic gas sensors.

A natural gas (NG) odorization system requires continuous monitoring as well as an optimal injection to satisfy the odorization guidelines, minimize over-odorization, and prevent hazardous gas leaks. NG consists of hydrocarbons such as methane, odorants such as tert-butyl mercaptan, and other sulphur-based VOCs such as hydrogen sulphide; therefore, selectivity is paramount for the reliable and accurate monitoring of odorants. In this study, we developed a portable device integrated with an array of five different sensors to detect a mixture of tert-butyl mercaptan and methyl ethyl sulphide for

The Impact of Various Natural Gas Contaminant Exposures on CO2/CH4 Separation by a Polyimide Membrane.

In this study, hollow fibers of commercial polyimide were arranged into membrane modules to test their capacity and performance towards natural gas processing. Particularly, the membranes were characterized for CO2/CH4 separation with and without exposure to some naturally occurring contaminants of natural gases, namely hydrogen sulfide, dodecane, and the mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylene), referred to as BTX. Gas permeation experiments were conducted to assess the changes in the permeability of CO2 and CH4 and related separation selectivity. Compared to the properties

Engineering nitrogen and oxygen functionalities in naturally sourced activated carbon for multicomponent gas adsorption.

Nitrogen doping is a widely adopted strategy to enhance the gas adsorption performance of activated carbon (AC) adsorbents. However, the simultaneous evolution of oxygen and nitrogen functional groups-especially in carbon precursors with high oxygen content-has received limited attention. In this study, coal-derived ACs with high surface areas (up to 940 m2/g) and micropore volumes (0.36 cm3/g) were synthesized via K2CO3-assisted physical activation, followed by nitrogen doping through co-pyrolysis with melamine. By regulating the doping temperature (600-900 °C), the nitrogen content of the re

On the Nature of the Partial Covalent Bond between Noble Gas Elements and Noble Metal Atoms.

This article provides a discussion on the nature of bonding between noble gases (Ng) and noble metals (M) from a quantum chemical perspective by investigating compounds such as NgMY (Y=CN, O, NO3, SO4, CO3), [NgM-(bipy)]+, NgMCCH, and MCCNgH complexes, where M=Cu, Ag, Au and Ng=Kr-Rn, with some complexes containing the lighter noble gas atoms as well. Despite having very low chemical reactivity, noble gases have been observed to form weak bonds with noble metals such as copper, gold, and silver. In this study, we explore the factors that contribute to this unusual bonding behavior, including t

Emissions implications of future natural gas production and use in the U.S. and in the Rocky Mountain region.

Enhanced prospects for natural gas production raise questions about the balance of impacts on air quality, as increased emissions from production activities are considered alongside the reductions expected when natural gas is burned in place of other fossil fuels. This study explores how trends in natural gas production over the coming decades might affect emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) for the United States and its Rocky Mountain region. The MARKAL (MARKet ALlocation) energy system optimization model is used with the U.S. Envir
