Association between enrollment in Medicaid expansion and healthcare utilization and outcomes in people with HIV in Nebraska, U.S.A.

Medicaid expansion in Nebraska allowed us to study the changes in healthcare utlization, adherence barriers and HIV outcomes following Medicaid enrollment. We conducted a prospective observational cohort study involving People with HIV aged 19 years or older who chose to enroll in Medicaid between October 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021. The participants completed a healthcare utilization questionnaire and an Adherence Barrier Questionnaire at baseline and 12-month post-Medicaid enrollment. Viral suppression was measured at baseline and the end of the study period. A total of 101 participants w

Distribution of vector abundance and infection rates in relation to human vector-borne disease cases in Nebraska.

Vector-borne diseases represent a growing public health issue nationwide. Nebraska reports a sustained burden of mosquito-borne diseases and expanding tick-borne disease risk. This study aims to assess retrospective surveillance data for vector abundance, vector infection rates, and human vector-borne disease reports to examine the relationship between vector factors and human risk. Vector abundance and pathogen infection rates were mapped alongside the presence and incidence of key vector-borne diseases. Mosquito surveillance and mosquito-borne disease data were available from 2012 to 2024, w

SARS-CoV-2 surveillance and detection in wild, captive, and domesticated animals in Nebraska: 2021-2023.

Widespread surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 was conducted across wildlife, captive animals in zoological collections, and domestic cats in Nebraska from 2021 to 2023. The goal of this effort was to determine the prevalence, phylogenetic and spatial distribution characteristics of circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants using various diagnostic methodologies that can utilize both antemortem and postmortem samples, which may be required for wildlife such as white-tailed deer. Statewide surveillance testing revealed high variation in SARS-CoV-2 prevalence among species, with white-tailed deer identified as th

Occurrence and seasonal incidence of mosquitoes on Indian reservations in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota during 1983.

A mosquito surveillance program designed to prevent future human cases of Western equine encephalitis or Saint Louis encephalitis was established in 1983 on Indian reservations under the jurisdiction of the Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. Standard New Jersey light traps were operated on all reservations throughout the summer season while CDC miniature and encephalitis virus surveillance traps were employed for shorter periods of time on 4 reservations. Aedes vexans was the most abundant species except on the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Winnebago and Yankton Sio

Multistate Mumps Outbreak Originating from Asymptomatic Transmission at a Nebraska Wedding - Six States, August-October 2019.

In August 2019, 30 attendees at a Nebraska wedding developed mumps after being exposed to one asymptomatic index patient who was fully vaccinated according to Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations (1), resulting in a multistate outbreak. A public health investigation and response revealed epidemiologic links that extended from the index patient through secondary, tertiary, and quaternary patients and culminated in a measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) booster vaccination campaign in the local community where approximately half of the patients resided.

Evidence of Lineage 1 and 3 West Nile Virus in Person with Neuroinvasive Disease, Nebraska, USA, 2023.

West Nile virus (WNV) is the most common cause of human arboviral disease in the contiguous United States, where only lineage 1 (L1) WNV had been found. In 2023, an immunocompetent patient was hospitalized in Nebraska with West Nile neuroinvasive disease and multisystem organ failure. Testing at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated an unusually high viral load and acute antibody response. Upon sequencing of serum and cerebrospinal fluid, we detected lineage 3 (L3) and L1 WNV genomes. L3 WNV had previously only been found in Central Europe in mosquitoes. The identification o

Chromosomal abnormalities in patients with non-cutaneous T-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The Nebraska Lymphoma Study Group.

In contrast to non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) with a B-cell phenotype, almost no data have been reported dealing with correlations between chromosomal abnormalities and characteristics of the disease in patients with T-cell NHL. In a retrospective analysis we studied all patients with a non-cutaneous T-cell NHL and chromosomal abnormalities that were evaluated at our institution; 20 patients could be identified. Numerical abnormalities involving chromosomes 3, 4, 5, 22 and X were observed most frequently. Structural abnormalities involved mainly the breakpoints 1q22-25, 6q23 and 11q13. There ap

Mutation analysis and haplotype correlation for 139 cystic fibrosis patients from the Nebraska Regional Cystic Fibrosis Center.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common autosomal recessive disorder in Caucasian populations with an approximate frequency of one in 2,500 live births and a carrier frequency of one in 25. We studied 400 individuals seen at The Nebraska Regional Cystic Fibrosis Center that included 139 CF patients, 206 parents, and 55 unaffected siblings to determine the frequency of the delta F508, R117H, G542X, S549R/N, G551D, R553X, R560T, and W1282X mutations. In addition, we determined haplotypes on each of these individual's chromosomes using four markers that included XV-2c, KM-19, pMP6d.9, and G2. Res

Human Papillomavirus Vaccination and Pap Smear Rates Among Burmese Refugee Girls in a Healthcare System in Omaha, Nebraska.

While human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccinations and Pap smear screenings are known to improve the survival rates and incidence of cervical cancer, refugee populations have traditionally been disadvantaged within this arena. Due to past and recent political issues in Myanmar, Burmese refugee women in Nebraska may be at particular risk due to their increasing numbers. This study examined 65 female Burmese refugees who were candidates for HPV vaccinations and 106 female Burmese refugees who could have received Pap smear screenings between 2010 and 2020. Of the 65 patients aged 11-26, 49.2% initiat

Clinicopathologic features, management and outcomes of blastoid variant of mantle cell lymphoma: a Nebraska Lymphoma Study Group Experience.

The objective of this retrospective study (N = 169) was to compare the overall survival (OS) of different subtypes of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) treated by the Nebraska Lymphoma Study Group between 1984 and 2012. The overall response rate to various therapies including stem cell transplant (SCT) was similar (p = 0.44) between blastoid, diffuse and nodular subtypes. At 5 years, blastoid and diffuse subtypes had worse OS (overall p = 0.005) compared to nodular subtype. In multivariate analysis, the blastoid and diffuse subtypes had similar risk of death (p = 0.14) whereas the nodular subtype had

Spatial and campaign-scale dynamics of trace elements in lakes and ponds of the Iowa and Nebraska - Missouri River floodplain.

Trace-element contamination in small floodplain water bodies can vary sharply among neighboring catchments, and regional averages may conceal individual hotspots. Water from six lakes and ponds in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska were examined during three site-wide surveys: Summer 2024, Fall 2025, and Spring 2026, yielding 18 site-campaign observations. Eleven trace elements-aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) were retained after data verification, and concentrations were standard

Leveraging Emergency Relief Funding for Behavioral Health Workforce Development: Policy Lessons From Nebraska's Experience.

The authors describe Nebraska's implementation of $25.5 million in State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds of the American Rescue Plan Act through the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, a state-funded workforce center housed in an academic medical center. Funds were allocated across four workforce priorities: training and education, tele-behavioral health, COVID-19 workforce projects, and financial incentives for clinical supervision. Embedded program evaluation, technical assistance, and an equity-focused application review process enabled rapid administration, accountability, and

Geospatial Distribution of Age-Adjusted Incidence of the Three Major Types of Pediatric Cancers and Waterborne Agrichemicals in Nebraska.

This study was conducted to examine, at the county level, the relationship between pediatric cancer incidence rate and atrazine and nitrate mean concentrations in surface and groundwater. A negative binomial regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between central nervous system (CNS) tumors, leukemia, lymphoma, and atrazine and nitrate mean concentrations in groundwater. The age-adjusted brain and other CNS cancer incidence was higher than the national average in 63% of the Nebraska counties. After controlling for the counties socio-economic status and nitrate concentr

Seroprevalence, frequency of leptospiuria, and associated risk factors in horses in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska from 2016-2017.

Leptospirosis is a worldwide veterinary and public health concern, and well recognized infectious disease of horses. Seroprevalence rates vary with geography, but many studies have confirmed a high exposure rate. The correlation between seropositivity and shedding status has not been made in horses, however. The aims of this study were to use semi-nested PCR on urine from apparently healthy horses to determine period prevalence of leptospiral shedding and to correlate these findings with MAT results to establish associations with client based survey data regarding horse management and environm

Use of PCR to identify Leptospira in kidneys of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) in Kansas and Nebraska, USA.

Bats have been implicated as potential carriers of Leptospira as a result of surveys, mostly in Australia and South America. We measured the prevalence of pathogenic leptospires in kidneys of bats from Kansas and Nebraska. From 7 August 2012 to 21 August 2012, we extracted DNA from kidneys of 98 big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) submitted and found negative for rabies. The DNA was processed in a two-step, seminested PCR assay with a dual-labeled Taqman probe specific for pathogenic leptospires. As a negative control, we used a saprophytic leptospire (Leptospira biflexa Patoc) and, as a pathoge

A case-control study of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in eastern Nebraska.

To evaluate the role of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in the development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), we conducted a population-based, case-control study in 66 counties in eastern Nebraska. Telephone interviews were conducted with 201 white men diagnosed with NHL between July 1, 1983, and June 30, 1986, and with 725 controls. There was a 50% excess of NHL among men who mixed or applied 2,4-D (odds ratio [OR] = 1.5; 95% confidence interval = 0.9, 2.5). The risk of NHL increased with the average frequency of use to over threefold for those exposed 20 or more days per y

Helminth community structure in tadpoles of northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) and Woodhouse's toads (Bufo woodhousii) from Nebraska.

Currently, little information is available on helminth community structure in tadpoles, the ephemeral, feeding, non-reproductive larva stages of anurans. We examined the helminth community structure in tadpoles of northern leopard frogs, Rana pipiens, and Woodhouse's toads, Bufo woodhousii, from a first-order stream in Western Nebraska. Specifically, we were interested in how species-specific difference in size, time to metamorphosis, and habitat partitioning among larval anurans affect their helminth community structure. From June-July 2009, we collected 30 tadpoles of northern leopard frogs,
