Training and equipment to prevent athletic head and neck injuries.

Due to the potential for catastrophic neurotraumas and cervical spine injuries in sport, the sports health care professional must take proper measures to prevent such injuries. Strength training of the cervical spine, teaching of proper sporting techniques, and use of protective sports equipment are three primary means of attempting to prevent neurotraumas and cervical spine injuries in sports. There are other avenues to assist in preventing these injuries, such as flexibility programs. The sports health care professional, therefore, must be knowledgeable of the needs of each individual athlet

Assault-related anoxia and neck injuries in US emergency departments.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of non-fatal strangulation in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV) is crucial due to its severe physical and psychological consequences for the individual experiencing it. This study investigates the under-reported and underestimated burden of IPV-related non-fatal strangulation by analysing assault-related injuries leading to anoxia and neck injuries. METHODS: An IRB-exempt, retrospective review of prospectively collected data were performed using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System All Injury Programme data from 2005 to 2019 for all

Management of Head and Neck Injuries by the Sideline Physician.

Although rare, sport-related injuries to the head and neck can be life threatening; therefore, timely and appropriate treatment is critical. Preparation is key for the sideline physician and begins well before arriving on the sideline. Knowing the athletic trainer and support staff, establishing a chain of command and emergency action plan, and having all the appropriate equipment readily available are important for game or practice preparedness. At the athletic event, physicians should have a clear line of sight to the field of play and easy access to reach the field when necessary. When perf

Head and neck injuries after leopard attack: Presentation and management.

Leopard attacks on humans are reported most often from the Indian subcontinent. The bite wounds are complex injuries infected with polymicrobial inoculum and may present as punctures, abrasions, lacerations or avulsions. The presentation and acceptable treatment of these injuries vary according to the wound. We hereby describe the clinical presentation and treatment of a male victim with leopard bite injuries on the head and neck region. As bite injuries are commonly found on and around the face, maxillofacial surgeons should be familiar with the therapy. Through thorough clinical and radiolog

CT Findings of Firework Injuries to the Head and Neck.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to review the CT imaging findings of injuries in the head and neck caused by fireworks through a case series. METHODS: The imaging database from the University of Chicago Medicine was searched with "fireworks," "firecrackers," and "mortar" as keywords and CT as the imaging modality. Cases without acute CT findings or initial CT scans were excluded. RESULTS: Eighteen cases with acute CT findings of head and neck firework injuries were identified and included. The associated injuries included skull fractures (5, 28%), ocular injuries (7, 39%), soft tiss

Fatal head and neck injuries in military underbody blast casualties.

INTRODUCTION: Death as a consequence of underbody blast (UBB) can most commonly be attributed to central nervous system injury. UBB may be considered a form of tertiary blast injury but is at a higher rate and somewhat more predictable than injury caused by more classical forms of tertiary injury. Recent studies have focused on the transmission of axial load through the cervical spine with clinically relevant injury caused by resultant compression and flexion. This paper seeks to clarify the pattern of head and neck injuries in fatal UBB incidents using a pragmatic anatomical classification.

[ENT emergency treatment and alcohol related head and neck injuries].

The spectrum of ENT-diseases can differ widely among emergency departments (ED) of different geographic regions. Especially in terms of head and neck trauma a higher number of injuries can be expected in large cities due to alcohol related violence. The ED of a large hospital situated in the center of Hamburg Germany was analysed for ENT-emergency treatments in 2011 retrospectively. Beside usual patient statistics, the study focused on alcohol related injuries with an ENT-surgeon involved. All data were compared to reports by other EDs in Germany and alcohol related costs were approximated for

Biomechanics of sports-induced axial-compression injuries of the neck.

CONTEXT: Head-first sports-induced impacts cause cervical fractures and dislocations and spinal cord lesions. In previous biomechanical studies, researchers have vertically dropped human cadavers, head-neck specimens, or surrogate models in inverted postures. OBJECTIVE: To develop a cadaveric neck model to simulate horizontally aligned, head-first impacts with a straightened neck and to use the model to investigate biomechanical responses and failure mechanisms. DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. SETTING: Biomechanics research laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Five human cadav

Spectrum of imaging findings in hyperextension injuries of the neck.

Nonphysiologic hyperextension and lateral forces acting on the cervical spine and soft-tissue structures of the neck can result in a wide spectrum of injury patterns. Multiple factors (eg, patient age; the underlying morphologic features of the cervical spine; the magnitude, vector, and maximal focus of the force) all influence the observed patterns and the severity of injury. A review of the 5-year trauma database in two trauma centers revealed various injury patterns that were frequently recognized in patients with clinical evidence or historical documentation of a predominant hyperextension

Assessment of ocular trauma associated with head and neck injuries.

We reviewed the real and potential ocular problems in all head and neck injuries at a tertiary care and regional trauma center from April of 1994 to March of 1995. Through a retrospective study, 127 charts were reviewed, specifically looking at the mechanism of injury, types of injury, whether there was any ocular trauma noted in the chart, and whether there was a consultation to the ophthalmology department. Forty-one of these patients were seen by an ophthalmologist as the initial consultant for ocular and orbital injuries recognized by the emergency staff. In the 86 remaining patients, sign

Are head, neck and facial injuries markers of domestic violence?

Few data exist regarding the relationship between the location of injuries and the presence of domestic violence. This study of 127 people at an inner-city hospital emergency department found that most patients had head, neck and facial injuries. Although only 23 percent of patients with such injuries were victims of domestic violence, 94.4 percent of victims of domestic violence had head, neck and facial injuries. The study results indicate that head, neck and facial injuries could be markers of domestic violence.

Reflex mechanisms of death in missile injuries of the neck.

Three cases of missile injury to the neck are reported, two homicides and one suicide. In two fatalities, the autopsy revealed contusion of the spinal cord due to direct missile injury of the cervical spine but without laceration of the spinal dura. It was concluded that the temporary cavity following penetration of the bullet caused contusion of the spinal cord with subsequent reflex cardiac arrest. In the suicide case, the entrance wound was in the mouth, the bullet track traversed the pharynx and the cervical spine with complete transection of the cord, and the bullet lodged in the right sc

Injury-Reduction Programs Containing Neuromuscular Neck Exercises and the Incidence of Soccer-Related Head and Neck Injuries.

CONTEXT: Concern is growing among soccer players, coaches, and parents regarding head and neck injuries, including concussion, particularly from heading a ball. Thus, we need to explore soccer-specific head injury risk-reduction initiatives. One such initiative is to condition the neck musculature of young players by adding neuromuscular neck exercises to existing injury-reduction exercise programs. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of neuromuscular neck exercises completed as part of an injury risk-reduction exercise program on the incidence of soccer-related head and neck injuries in ado

Osteoid Osteoma of the Femoral Neck in Athletes: Two Case Reports Differentiating From Femoral Neck Stress Injuries.

The diagnosis of an intra-articular osteoid osteoma can be a challenging and lengthy process, with reports of delayed diagnosis of greater than 2 years. In the young, athletic patient with an atraumatic onset of groin pain, an overuse injury or muscle strain is the most likely etiology. However, an overuse injury of femoral neck stress fracture must be identified because of the potentially disastrous outcome of fracture completion. The similar clinical presentation of a femoral neck stress fracture and intra-articular osteoid osteoma of the femoral neck can further delay the diagnosis of the o

Injuries to neck structures in deaths due to constriction of neck, with a special reference to hanging.

This prospective study aimed at examining various injuries to the neck structures in deaths due to constriction of neck. Neck dissection technique, as advocated by Prinsloo and Gordon was undertaken to study the injuries to the thyro-hyoid complex, strap muscles, carotid vessels, etc. Of the 1746 medico-legal autopsies, conducted during the study period, 5% were deaths due asphyxia of which 82% were those of constriction of neck. The 21-30 years age group accounted for the maximum number of cases (57%). Male:female ratio was 2:1. Hanging (69%) outnumbered other asphyxial deaths--ligature and/o
