The correlation between strength and range of motion of the neck muscles and opium smoking in Iran.

OBJECTIVES: Opium smoking is commonly practiced via traditional and novel routes in Iran. Both smoking methods are practiced in a non-ergonomic position. According to previous studies and our hypothesis, it can be potentially harmful to the cervical spine. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between opium smoking and neck range of motion and neck muscle strength. METHODS: In this cross-sectional and correlational study, the range of motion and strength of the neck muscles of 120 men with drug use disorder were measured by a CROM goniometer and a hand-held dynamometer

Feedforward activity of the cervical flexor muscles during voluntary arm movements is delayed in chronic neck pain.

The objective of this study was to compare onset of deep and superficial cervical flexor muscle activity during rapid, unilateral arm movements between ten patients with chronic neck pain and 12 control subjects. Deep cervical flexor (DCF) electromyographic activity (EMG) was recorded with custom electrodes inserted via the nose and fixed by suction to the posterior mucosa of the oropharynx. Surface electrodes were placed over the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and anterior scalene (AS) muscles. While standing, subjects flexed and extended the right arm in response to a visual stimulus. [Examination of averaged EMG potentials from the neck muscles after vestibular organ activation by acoustic stimulus (VEMPs)].

Electrophysiological examination of the function of perceptive organs, like eye or cochlea, works up more and more interest in scientists to look for an objective method of vestibular end organ investigation. In many papers authors attempt to estimate the efficiency of vestibular organs after using angular or linear acceleration as stimulus, which required special and expensive apparatus. Papers that described vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) seem to be very promising. In this study an attempt was taken to obtain VEMPs with own modification of stimulus and response register. Preli

Optimizing Atlas Counts for MRI-Guided Atlas-Based Autosegmentation of Swallowing Muscles in Head and Neck Radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy-induced dysphagia can significantly impair head and neck (H&N) cancer patients' quality of life. Despite the dose-dependent relationship between radiotherapy and dysphagia, swallowing structures are not routinely contoured due to time and labor demands. We evaluated atlas-based autosegmentation (ABAS) on MRI, identifying the optimal number of atlases required to efficiently and accurately delineate swallowing structures. METHODS: This study included pre-radiotherapy simulation T2-weighted MRIs from 60 H&N cancer patients enrolled in an IRB-approved observational trial. S

Cxcr4 and Sdf-1 are critically involved in the formation of facial and non-somitic neck muscles.

The present study shows that the CXCR4/SDF-1 axis regulates the migration of second branchial arch-derived muscles as well as non-somitic neck muscles. Cxcr4 is expressed by skeletal muscle progenitor cells in the second branchial arch (BA2). Muscles derived from the second branchial arch, but not from the first, fail to form in Cxcr4 mutants at embryonic days E13.5 and E14.5. Cxcr4 is also required for the development of non-somitic neck muscles. In Cxcr4 mutants, non-somitic neck muscle development is severely perturbed. In vivo experiments in chicken by means of loss-of-function approach ba

Effect of cycling on oxygenation of relaxed neck/shoulder muscles in women with and without chronic pain.

Work-related neck/shoulder muscle pain has been associated with increased anaerobic muscle metabolism. Thus, interventions to enhance oxygenation of painful muscles seem relevant. While cycling with relaxed shoulders has been shown to result in acute neck/shoulder muscle pain reduction, the effect on tissue oxygenation remains unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate tissue oxygenation of the passive trapezius muscle during and after cycling in female workers with (MYA) and without (CON) trapezius myalgia. Eligible participants (n = 17 MYA, n = 8 CON) performed 20 min sub-maxim

Cervical extensor muscle activity during neck tasks in individuals with and without neck pain: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In the context of neck pain, neck muscle activity adapts through diverse regional coordination modifications during tasks. Although patterns of cervical flexor muscle impairment are well-documented, patterns in the cervical extensor muscles are less clear, hindering assessment and treatment. Despite studies revealing adaptations in the cervical extensor muscles, outcome measure heterogeneity complicates interpretation, particularly between superficial and deep muscles. To address this, we conducted a systematic review comparing neck extensor muscle activity between symptomatic and

An Unusual Cause of Fever, Neck Pain, and Neck Stiffness: Acute Calcific Tendinitis of the Longus Colli Muscle.

BACKGROUND: Acute calcific tendinitis (ACT) of the longus colli muscle (LCM) is an inflammatory response due to deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals. It is typically correlated with whiplash and overuse injuries. A common presentation of this inflammatory response is acute but progressive neck pain. It is a rare but important cause of neck pain that should be considered on a differential diagnosis when distinguishing between life-threatening conditions and non-life-threatening causes of neck pain. CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED) reporting a

Scapular muscle exercises following neck dissection surgery for head and neck cancer: a comparative electromyographic study.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder pain and dysfunction can occur following neck dissection surgery for cancer. These conditions often are due to accessory nerve injury. Such an injury leads to trapezius muscle weakness, which, in turn, alters scapular biomechanics. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess which strengthening exercises incur the highest dynamic activity of affected trapezius and accessory scapular muscles in patients with accessory nerve dysfunction compared with their unaffected side. DESIGN: A comparative design was utilized for this study. METHODS: The study was conducted in a p
