BACKGROUND: Needlestick injuries (NSIs) remain a leading occupational hazard among healthcare workers (HCWs), carrying substantial health and economic burdens. High-throughput procedural settings are particularly vulnerable, yet evidence on setting-specific interventions' effects and durability under healthcare system volatility remains limited. Existing surveillance systems for NSIs struggle to distinguish genuine risk escalation from clinical workload fluctuations. This study aims to characterize the epidemiological and economic burden of NSIs among HCWs, evaluate the effectiveness of safety

We present a case of documented acute hepatitis C that occurred in a health care worker who sustained a needlestick injury while caring for an individual who was infected with both hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). According to the findings of third-generation serological assays performed during a follow-up of >1 year, the health care worker, who was treated with interferon-alpha (during weeks 2-6) and ribavirin (during weeks 5-9), did not develop antibodies against HCV, in spite of documentation of an HCV-specific T cell response.

This article deals with the general recommendations on vaccination and postexposure prophylaxis, which can be utilized for cuts and needlestick injuries. Cuts and needlestick injuries among surgeons are common occupational accidents. These should be interpreted as acute or emergency situations, especially if there was contact with infectious index patients or the danger of infection cannot be excluded. This results in high economic costs but also in the individual confrontation with an infectious disease that is definitely incurable. The aim of this review is to highlight the general and occup

Worldwide the needlestick injuries of health care workers (HCWs) still represent a major health problem. The authors aimed to evaluate the risk of HCW needlestick injuries in a tertiary university hospital in southern Italy in relation to some HCW characteristics (age, sex, professional profile, work department) and the source of infection. All HCWs of the University Hospital "Federico II" in Naples, Italy, attending the Infectious Diseases Unit after potential accidental contact to blood-borne viruses through needlestick injuries were enrolled during a 22-year period. HCWs underwent clinical

The needlestick injuries are the most frequent accidents among hospital staff. The aim of this study is to identify some factors associated with accidents caused by needlestick injuries at hospitals, so as to measure the risk that they present. A case-control study has been made, the subject of which is the nurses working at "Reina Sofía" Hospital in Córdoba and within the period June 30, 1990 and June 30, 1991. A more significant factor in relation to needlestick injuries was the recapping of the needle after being used. The risk of injury being 3.95, 7.68 an 17.85 times higher between those

Studies in which noninfected persons shared households with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected family members and friends, and had substantial though non-sexual contact with them revealed no transmissions of the HIV virus. These results suggest a similar low risk for healthcare workers, particularly those who have little or no contact with blood. However, occupational transmission of HIV, when it does occur, is most commonly caused by needlestick injuries. Nurses make up the largest group--nearly 80%--of hospital workers who contract HIV infection on the job. Generally, the risk ratio

BACKGROUND: More than 30 million needle syringes are distributed per year in Australia as a component of harm-reduction strategies for injecting drug users (IDU). Discarded needle syringes create considerable anxiety within the community, but the extent of needlestick injuries and level of blood-borne virus transmission risk is unclear. We have undertaken a review of studies of blood-borne virus survival as the basis for advice and management of community needlestick injuries.
METHODS: A Medline review of published articles on blood-borne virus survival and outcome from community injuries.

To determine the risk of exposure to blood and body fluids potentially contaminated with infectious organisms, we instituted a prospective study of 100 gynecologic procedures performed at Hospital General Regional of Puebla, México. Accidental exposure to blood occurred during 8 procedures (8%). There were 8 glove tears (8%). Needlestick injuries occurred in 6% of the operations. The frequency of blood contamination, glove tears and percutaneous injuries is high; surgical personnel are at risk of contracting a blood-borne disease such as HIV infection or viral hepatitis. A literature review revealed 33 reports of health care workers who have contracted HIV infection as a result of their work. Four of these were expatriate doctors who had worked in Africa. The commonest mode of transmission was needlestick injury, but several infections acquired through contact or skin or mucous membrane with infected blood have been reported. In this paper we outline how the risk of HIV infection in a health care worker can be estimated for a given number of exposures. The formula is based on the known likelihood of transmission per needlestick, the seroprevalence rate among p

BACKGROUND: Needlestick injuries confer an unnecessary risk of occupational bloodborne infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. After an accidental needlestick injury, procedures for inoculation of liquid culture media for rapid detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and other mycobacteria from blood and bone marrow specimens were reviewed.
AIM: To identify a safer transfer device, which could replace the ordinary syringe in inoculation of liquid culture vials.
METHODS: We identified a transfer device to t

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission by needlestick accidents involving hospital employees has become an important problem. The present report is of a case of acute hepatitis C that developed after a needlestick injury, despite short duration interferon treatment performed just after the accident in a trial effort to prevent HCV transmission. Nosocomial infection of HCV in medical employees is reviewed, and the current prospects for protecting them from HCV transmission after needlestick accident are discussed.

Although occupationally acquired zoonoses of nonhuman primates have been well documented, the epidemiology of work-related injuries associated with occupational exposure to nonhuman primates has not been studied. To investigate such injuries, we retrospectively reviewed injury records at one regional primate research center and distributed a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire to at-risk personnel at two centers. Records of bite, animal-inflicted scratch, needlestick, cut, and mucous membrane exposure injuries were reviewed at one center for the 5-year period 1988 to 1993 to determine i

Needlestick injuries since 2004 to 2006 were evaluated in University healthcare workers that reported an accident by point, sharp or mucosal contamination. During this period, 497 accidents with instruments contamined with biological fluids were reported. The injuries were most frequent between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. (233 accidents). There is no difference during the week (excluding Saturday and Sunday), whereas February, May, June, and July were the months at risk. The most of accidents were during the first four hours of the job. They were identified 423 known sources and compliance with follow-u

Canadian undergraduate medical students sustain needlestick injuries, which have adverse implications, including blood-borne illnesses and personal anxiety. This study sought to determine students' needle handling efficacy and to examine the prevalence of formal training around needlestick safety and reporting procedures both nationally and, specifically, within the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario (U of T). A seven-question survey electronic survey was distributed to 116 undergraduate medical education (UME) leaders practising in high-risk rotations at 13 Canadian universities. Addit

The CDC estimates that there are almost 400,000 needlestick injuries annually among hospital-based healthcare workers. Up to 4% develop acute hepatitis C. But nothing brings home the reality of the disease like this nurse's story.

Workplace injuries, such as musculoskeletal injuries, needlestick injuries, and emotional and physical violence, remain an issue in U.S. hospitals. To develop meaningful safety programs, it is important to identify workplace factors that contribute to injuries. This study explored factors that affect injuries in a sample of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) in Florida. Regressions were run on models in which the dependent variable was the degree to which the respondent had experienced needlesticks, work-related musculoskeletal injuries, cuts or lacerations, contusions, verbal violence,

In order to illustrate frequency of peroperative accidental needle-stick injuries and lacerations among operation theatre staff, the theatre staffs in the Central Hospital in Hillerød (CH), the County Hospital in Roskilde (ASR) and the St. Elisabeth Municipal Hospital in Copenhagen (SE) were requested to complete a questionnaire after every operation in which they had participated. This investigation took place during a period of three months in CH and two months in ASR and SE. A total of 861 questionnaires were completed with a percentage of replies of 54.4. Of these, 355 (41%) were gynaecolo
