Specimens of the rat hookworm, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nematoda) were recovered from lungs (third- and fourth-stage larvae) and intestine (fourth-stage larvae and adults). The following features were studied in the different stages by scanning electron microscopy: cephalic structures, especially sense organs, synlophe, cervical region, and caudal part. The main differences between the third and fourth stages concerned the lip-like structures around the oral aperture, the appearance of the cephalic space with the presence of a cephalic cap in fourth-stage larvae, the pattern of longitudin

The synergistic relationship between host nutrition and the effects of Nippostrongylus was investigated experimentally in rats fed a diet containing 1% (w/w) protein. Rats were infected with 10 doses of N. brasiliensis varying from 0.35 to 99 larvae/g and their daily food intake and weekly body mass were compared with those uninfected rats fed the same diet for a period of 9 weeks. The deterioration of the uninfected rats observed as a result of protein-energy malnutrition was found to be accelerated in a dose-dependent manner in the rats infected with N. brasiliensis. Analysis of food intake

The infraorder Rhigonematomorpha is a unique group of zooparasitic nematodes commonly occurring in the hindgut of millipedes. Our present knowledge of the composition of the Rhigonematomorpha nematode fauna in China is far from complete. The current genetic data base for Rhigonematomorpha remains very limited, and the molecular phylogeny of Rhigonematomorpha is still in its beginning phase. In the present study, Xystrognathus priscus was redescribed using light microscopy and, for the first time, scanning electron microscopy based on the freshly collected specimens from Litostrophus scaber (Sp

The species Haemonchus contortus occurs in many regions worldwide, mainly parasitising small ruminants and economically impacting animal production. Climate change is considered a driving force for the risk of diseases caused by helminths and can also affect relationships between parasites and their hosts, with the potential to cause losses in both animal production and biodiversity in general. The aim of this study was to model the potential distribution of H. contortus in South America. We used MaxEnt to perform the analyses and describe the contribution of important bioclimatic variables in

BACKGROUND: Anisakis simplex is the only fishery-product associated parasite causing clinical allergic responses in humans so far. However, other anisakids, due to the presence of shared or own allergens, could also lead to allergic reactions after sensitization. The aim of this study was to determine if Pseudoterranova decipiens belonging to the family Anisakidae has allergenic activity and is able to induce sensitization after oral administration in a murine (BALB/c mice) model.
RESULTS: The ingestion of A. pegreffii proteins by BALB/c mice, which had been previously sensitized by intraperi

The surveillance of vectors for arthropod-borne pathogens is nowadays an important tool in surveillance programmes throughout Europe. Whereas many studies have been performed to screen arthropods for viruses or bacterial pathogens, only limited information is available concerning the geographical distribution and vector range of pathogenic filariae in Central Europe. To consider the prevalence of filarial parasites in mosquito vectors, we performed a molecular survey of mosquitoes for filarial DNA. Mosquito collection was conducted at six study sites in the South Moravian region (Czech Republi

Members of the Trichodoridae can cause substantial crop losses directly by feeding on plant roots and indirectly as vectors of tobraviruses; both vector and virus are polyphagous. In April of 2008, soil samples from the rhizosphere of Ulmus minor Mill in a deciduous broadleaf forest at Krivoklat yielded a population of Trichodorus variopapillatus Hooper, 1972. Nematodes were identified by morphological and morphometric characters as well as by molecular analysis. For classical identification, specimens were extracted from soil by a decanting-sieving method, heat killed and fixed in triethanola

Angiostrongylus cantonensis-associated eosinophilic meningitis in humans has been commonly reported worldwide. However parasitologically confirmed cases are not common, as the parasite has been recovered only infrequently from the cerebrospinal fluid of patients. The potential value of immunodiagnosis is therefore self-evident. Immunological tests can also help in the differential diagnosis of parasitic (particularly helminths) infections that cause eosinophilic meningitis. This paper summarizes the state of and advances in the immunological diagnosis of human angiostrongyliasis due to Angiost

Members of the Trichodoridae can cause substantial crop losses directly by feeding on plant roots and indirectly as vectors of tobraviruses; both vector and virus are polyphagous. Although trichodorid nematodes are important pests of agricultural crops, no data are available on the presence or extent of these nematodes in the Czech Republic. In June 2005, three soil samples from the rhizosphere of a Quercus sp. at Cerveny Vrch yielded a population of Trichodorus similis Seinhorst, 1963. Specimens were extracted from soil by a decanting-sieving method, heat killed, and fixed in triethanolamine

Non-type material identified as Seinura winchesi, and deposited in the collection of the Nematology Department, Rothamsted Experimental Station, England, is described. The material was collected from mushroom compost in Leeds, England, in 1957. Females of this population are characterized by a set-off head, knobless stylet (20-21 microm), two rows of oogonia-oocytes, and absence of a postuterine sac. The median bulb is oblong and, at times, is constricted in the middle. The body is 565 to 675 microm long and tapers posteriorly to a pointed terminus. The cuticle is finely annulated, and there a

Parafilaria bovicola was introduced into Sweden and identified for the first time in Swedish cattle in 1978. Since then the parasite has become well established and has been responsible for substantial economic losses in Swedish beef production. Although studies have been undertaken on serodiagnosis, life cycle, vector and geographical distribution within Sweden this is the first full description of P. bovicola from Swedish cattle and the first study to use scanning electron microscopy. P. bulgarica Daskalov, 1944 is regarded as a synonym of P. bovicola Tubangui, 1934. Tooth-like thickenings d

Hysterothylacium petteri sp. n. was recovered from the stomach of Xiphias gladius occurring in the Kuroshio. The morphological difference of H. petteri from all other species of this genus is the extremely long ventricular caecum (two times more than pharynx). The species is very similar to H. corrugatum Deardorff et Overstreet, 1980 from swordfish off the American shores and corresponds to the description of Hysterothylacium sp. by Petter, Maillard, 1987. The third stage larvae of H. petteri sp. n. are probably those larval forms which were described as Contracaecum sp. l. Type IIA in Brunsdo

The accumulated and de novo synthesized antigens expressed by L3, L4 and adult Necator americanus, recognized by both the natural host, man, and the experimental host, the hamster, were identified by immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation analysis. Following infection of neonatal hamsters serum samples were taken on days 17, 35 and 117. Only serum taken 117 days after infection showed significant reactivity in immunoblotting experiments, recognizing adult epitopes of 30,000, 33,000, 48,000 and 69,000 mol. wt thereby suggesting that few accumulated antigens are shared between developmental stag
