Heligmosomoides polygyrus and Trypanosoma congolense infections in mice: a laboratory model for concurrent gastrointestinal nematode and trypanosome infections.

A murine model using Heligmosomoides polygyrus and Trypanosoma congolense has been developed for studying the effects of concurrent chronic gastrointestinal nematode and trypanosome infections. Female outbred mice were infected either with 500 infective larvae (L3) of H. polygyrus or with 10(4) bloodstream forms of T. congolense or both. In concurrent infections, animals were dosed with both parasites simultaneously or the trypanosomes were injected 5 or 10 days after the mice were infected with the nematode. The course of infection was monitored by routine parasitological and immunological te

Occurrence and control of equine strongyle nematode infections in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Widespread overuse of anthelmintics has produced a growing population of intestinal parasites resistant to control measures. A paradigm shift in equine parasite control is warranted to prevent continued resistance development and maintain equine health. Small strongyles, which are ubiquitous in horses, are currently the most important intestinal parasites of adult horses. Sustainable management programs consider the variation in egg shedding by individual horses, and varied risks associated with age, use, density, climate, and environment. To develop regional recommendations for Prince Edward

Gastrointestinal nematode infections in adult dairy cattle: impact on production, diagnosis and control.

Due to the intensification of dairy herds and the recognition of subclinical infections with a negative impact on production as disease, control of gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes in adult cows is becoming established in an increasing number of dairy herds. The objectives of this paper are to review the aspects related to the impact on production, diagnosis and control of GI nematodes in adult dairy cattle. During the last decade substantial evidence has been generated that GI nematodes can have a negative impact on the performance of adult animals. The milk-yield response to anthelmintic trea

Progress in the molecular biology of malaria and the immunology of nematode infections.

Japan is one of a small number of countries to have successfully controlled or eliminated major parasitic diseases, including malaria, filariasis, schistosomiasis and enteric parasitoses. Of particular importance in this success was a close collaboration between primary research and public health efforts. Many Japanese researchers continue to study malaria, particularly the areas of genetics and immunology, and this should contribute to global parasite eradication strategies. Furthermore, studies of immunoregulation of nematode infection using the interleukin-18 pathway, most of which have bee

Nematode infections of the eye: toxocariasis, onchocerciasis, diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis, and cysticercosis.

Nematode infections of the eye are common in different parts of the world, but some are usually encountered only in developing nations, such as onchocerciasis and cysticercosis. Ocular toxocariasis is a well-known cause of unilateral ocular disease affecting mainly children and young adults, and is usually caused by T canis. Prevention of ocular toxocariasis is based on such measures as appropriate health care for dogs and cats, including regular anthelmintic treatments, preventing contamination of the environment with feces, and promoting responsible pet ownership [1,49-51]. Onchocerciasis is

Immunoepidemiology of intestinal helminthic infections. 1. The global burden of intestinal nematode disease.

Estimates of the world-wide prevalence of intestinal nematode infections indicate that there are more than 1000 million people infected, and several million cases of clinical helminthiases. Recent studies suggest that the morbidity has been underestimated and that moderate intensities of infection may have important developmental consequences, particularly for children of school age.

[Embovin efficacy and tolerance in the treatment of patients with intestinal nematode infections].

The efficacy and tolerance of embovin, a new anthelminthic manufactured in Russia, was studied in 60 patients with nematodiases. The results evidence its high efficacy in ankylostomiasis (100%), enterobiasis (100%), and ascariasis (90 +/- 6.4%). The drug was well tolerated in all the cases. No adverse effects on the liver, pancreas, kidneys, as well as on the peripheral blood and urine composition were detected. This recommends embovin for wide use in medical practice.

Efficacy of dichlorvos, fenbendazole, and ivermectin in swine with induced intestinal nematode infections.

Anthelmintic efficacies of dichlorvos, fenbendazole, and ivermectin were compared in specific-pathogen-free crossbred weanling pigs inoculated with Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis, and Oesophagostomum dentatum. On postinoculation day (PID) 50, 24 pigs in each treatment group were treated orally with 43 mg of dichlorvos/kg of body weight, 3 X 3 mg of fenbendazole/kg, or 300 micrograms of ivermectin/kg, SC. Twenty-four pigs were not treated. On posttreatment day 7 (PID 57), 12 pigs from each treatment group (phase I) were slaughtered, and the anthelmintic efficacy of each treatment was determined.

Epidemiology and treatment of respiratory nematode infections in western European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus).

Respiratory nematodes are common in rescued western European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus), but their epidemiology and treatment in rehabilitation settings remain poorly defined. We investigated respiratory nematode infections in 78 fecal samples of 30 hedgehogs admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation center in southern Portugal and in putative gastropod intermediate hosts. Outcomes after subcutaneous levamisole (10-20 mg/kg) and ivermectin (3 mg/kg) treatments, monitored by the Baermann technique, were compared. Respiratory nematode infections were highly prevalent in rescued hedgehogs and ma

Nematode Infections in Commercially Important Squid Species: Distribution Patterns and Food Safety Issues.

INTRODUCTION: Cephalopods represent a valuable fishery resource worldwide and play a crucial role in the marine food chain both as predators and prey but also as paratenic hosts for the transmission of Ascaridoids, including zoonotic nematodes of the Anisakidae family. This study aimed to assess the presence, tissue distribution and species composition of zoonotic parasites in four squid species marketed in Italy, coming from four different FAO areas. METHODS: A total of 238 squid specimens, Illex sp., I. coindetii, I. illecebrosus and Todaropsis eblanae, were caught across four FAO areas and

Evaluation of Commercially Available Anthelminthics in Laboratory Models of Human Intestinal Nematode Infections.

Drug repurposing from veterinary to human medicine has been the main strategy to develop the four recommended human anthelminthics, albendazole, mebendazole, levamisole, and pyrantel pamoate, for the treatment of soil-transmitted helminthiasis. A systematic, head-to-head comparison of the anthelminthic activity profile of derivatives of these drugs and other anthelminthics developed in succession has not been conducted to date. We studied eight benzimidazoles, five macrocyclic lactones, tribendimidine, levamisole, and pyrantel pamoate in laboratory models of human intestinal nematode infection

Evaluation of emodepside in laboratory models of human intestinal nematode and schistosome infections.

BACKGROUND: Helminthiases are very prevalent worldwide, yet their treatment and control rely on a handful of drugs. Emodepside, a marketed broad-spectrum veterinary anthelminthic with a unique mechanism of action, undergoing development for onchocerciasis is an interesting anthelmintic drug candidate. We tested the in vitro and in vivo activity of emodepside on nematode species that serve as models for human soil-transmitted helminth infection as well as on schistosomes. METHODS: In vitro viability assays were performed over a time course of 72 hours for Trichuris muris, Necator americanus, A
