One hundred and sixty one jaundiced newborns were investigated for the usefulness of perspex icterometer as a screening tool for neonatal jaundice. Along with serum bilirubin estimation, icterometer score was simultaneously obtained in all the cases. The correlation between serum bilirubin and icterometer score was high (r = 0.99). The icterometer was useful in various subgroups. A high sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value was seen in all the groups. A possible role of icterometer in India for screening newborns with jaundice at peripheral level is highlighted.

Screening for rare diseases first began more than 50 years ago with neonatal bloodspot screening (NBS) for phenylketonuria, and carrier screening for Tay-Sachs disease, sickle cell anaemia and β-thalassaemia. NBS's primary aim is health gain for children, while carrier screening enables autonomous reproductive choice. While screening can be beneficial, it also has the potential to cause harm and thus decisions are needed on whether a specific screening is worthwhile. These decisions are usually based on screening principles and criteria. Technological developments, both treatment driven and te

We report the clinical and laboratory findings, and molecular analysis of a Brazilian patient with resistance to thyroid hormone syndrome (RTH) detected by neonatal screening. The index case was born at term by normal delivery with 2,920 g and 45 cm. TSH of the neonatal screening test performed on the 5(th) day of life was of 13.1 µU/mL (cut-off = 10 µU/mL). In a confirmatory test, serum TSH level was 4.3 µU/mL, total T4 was 19 µg/dL (confirmed in another sample, Total T4 = > 24.0 µg/dL), free T4 was 3.7 ηg/dL, and free T3 was 6.7 pg/mL. Direct sequencing of the beta thyroid hormone receptor g

OBJECTIVE: Examination of neonatal hearing screening practices around the world suggests that more attention is placed on infants who fail bilaterally on their hearing screen than infants who refer (fail) in one ear. Some programmes only report bilateral failures as positive hearing screens. This study investigates how limitations of the screening techniques demand continued audiologic evaluations in unilateral referrals.
SETTING: The study sample consisted of all infants born at a single academic paediatric hospital between February 1998 and February 2002.
METHODS: There were 16,007 infants

BACKGROUND: As a result of population growth in African-Caribbean regions of overseas France, and now immigration essentially from North and sub-Saharan Africa to mainland France, neonatal screening for sickle cell disease (SCD) has been performed in France since 1985 in Guadalupe and dependencies, as a universal test. After several pilot studies, screening was gradually extended to mainland France in 1996. Since 2000, the test has been performed at national level for all newborns defined as being "at risk" for SCD based on ethnic origin.
METHODS: A dry blood sample is obtained by heel stick

OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to detect the incidence of erythrocytic Glucose-6 -Phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency, to compare the incidence of hyperbilirubinemia in G-6-PD deficient neonates as compared to G-6-PD normal neonates and to asses the usefulness of neonatal screening for G-6-PD deficiency.
METHOD: In a retrospective hospital based study 2,479 male and female neonates consecutively born at Indraprastha Apollo hospital between July 1998 to June 2003 who were screened for G-6-PD levels were evaluated for the incidence of G-6-PD deficiency.
RESULTS: Incidence of G-6

A screening programme which was already established to detect phenylketonuria in the newborn period in South Australia was extended to include screening for galactosaemia, homocystinuria, hereditary tyrosinaemia, histidinaemia, maple syrup urine disease and severe alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency for a trial period. Later, screening for hypothyroidism was introduced. Results suggest that screening for galactosaemia and hypothyroidism are useful additions to the programme. Screening for trrosinaemia and alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency produced a high number of requests for repeat samples, causing

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal inherited neuromuscular genetic disease caused, in 95% of cases, by homozygous deletions involving the SMN1 gene exon 7. It remains the leading cause of death in children under 2 years of age. New treatments have been developed and adopted for use in many countries, including the UK. Success of these treatments depends on early diagnosis and intervention in newborn babies, and many countries have implemented a newborn screening (NBS) or pilot NBS program to detect SMN1 exon 7 deletions on dried blood spots. In the UK, there is no current NBS progra

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is an important disorder affecting newborns admitted to NICU. A national hearing screening program using otoacoustic emission testing is an essential tool to identify hearing loss early in neonates, enabling early intervention to avoid further challenges of pediatric deafness. On the other hand, a delay of the auditory pathway maturation in preterm babies compared to term newborns has already been suggested in the literature. Taking this information into account, in this paper, we aim to identify the best time to perform NICU infant hearing screening tests.

OBJECTIVE: To determine pass and refer rates, and identify risk factors relating to refer responses, in neonates screened using distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 435 neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the Philippine General Hospital between May and October 2000 were screened using DPOAEs within 48 h of admission.
RESULTS: The male:female ratio in the sample was 1.05. In total, 56% of neonates were born preterm, the mean birthweight was 2,428.39 +/- 710.39 g and 8.9% weighed < 1,500 g. In total, 47.9% were delivere

The neoSCB app is a smartphone app in development that can screen newborn babies for "significant jaundice", defined as total serum bilirubin (TSB)> 250 μmol/L, which is the screening threshold for newborn babies older than 24 hours as recommended by the NICE Clinical Guidelines (No. 98). Babies with significant jaundice should be referred for a confirmatory blood test to determine if treatment is necessary. In this work, we investigated whether the neoSCB app could also be applied to screen newborn babies with lower screening thresholds, which may be applicable to those younger than 24 hours.

The screening of newborn babies for congenital hypothyroidism has changed the natural history of this abnormality. We describe here a case of a female patient with congenital hypothyroidism that was missed by primary neonatal thyroid screening (using thyroid-stimulating hormone) at two days of age; it was detected only after the development and persistence of jaundice during the first three weeks of life. A normal neonatal screening result does not preclude the development of hypothyroidism later in infancy. Clinical vigilance must be maintained by practitioners. A second screening between two

Introduction Universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) has been widely and strongly advocated as an early detection strategy for hearing loss in children. This intervention aims to prevent delays in speech and language development, which, in turn, has long-term beneficial effects on the social and emotional development and quality of life of individuals. However, the implementation of UNHS programs is circumstantial in different settings, for different reasons. Objectives The present systematic review aimed to identify whether the implementation of UNHS programs are cost-effective, as well

INTRODUCTION: Neonates undergo neonatal hearing screening to detect congenital hearing loss at an early stage. Once confirmed, it is necessary to perform an etiological workup to start appropriate treatment. The study objective was to assess the different etiologies, risk factors, and hearing results of infants with permanent hearing loss and to evaluate the efficacy and consequences of the different screening devices over the last 21 years.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort analysis for all neonatal hearing screening program referrals and performed an etiological wor

Neonatal genetic disease is currently screened mainly based on metabolite biochemical technology. The false positive rate of biochemical screening technology is relatively high, and there are certain false negatives, and only few types of diseases can be screened. The genetic techniques have been gradually used for neonatal genetic disease screening in recent years. Gene detection technology includes quantitative PCR (qPCR) and high-throughput sequencing. High-throughput sequencing includes gene panel sequencing, whole-exome sequencing and whole-genome sequencing. At present, qPCR and gene pan
