How does secondary neoplasm arise from mature teratomas in growing teratoma syndrome of the ovary? A report of two cases.

Development of secondary neoplasm in mature teratomas is a long-term potential risk in growing teratoma syndrome (GTS) of the ovary. The origin or histogenesis of the secondary neoplasm, however, is scarcely understood. We herein report two cases of GTS that began secondary neoplastic change 10 and 22 years after initial presentation. In one case, microscopic carcinoids were scattered over various mature elements derived from three germ cell layers: some were close to the intestinal-type glands or adipose tissue and others lay in the glia. This implies that these carcinoids multicentrically or

Lymphangiomatous Polyp of Tonsil: A Case Report.

Lymphangiomatous polyps of the palatine tonsils are uncommon hamartomatous proliferations that could be clinically misdiagnosed as malignant neoplasms. These polyps consist of dilated lymphatic vessels located inside fibrous and/or adipose tissue. In this paper, a 27-year-old man who presented to the outpatient clinic with a complaint of dysphagia is presented. On physical examination, the patient had a smooth, polypoid mass extending from the posterior section of the right palatine tonsil into the oropharynx. The patient underwent right tonsillectomy. Histopathological examination of the spec

[Intra-oral lipoma at the base of the tongue - Overview and case report].

Lipomas represent a relatively rare finding in the oral cavity. They are classed with soft tissue mesenchymal neoplasms, are benign and normally show a painless slow-growing character. Important is the differential diagnosis toward the liposarcomas, which represent a malignant version of adipose neoplasia and as well show a painless slow-growing character. Therefore, in case of clinical suspicion of a lipoma, a histopathological examination of the excisional biopsy has to be exercised in order to confirm the clinical diagnosis. The aim of the present case report is to present the step-by-step

Lipomatous uterine masses: potential to mimic ovarian dermoids on endovaginal sonography.

Lipomatous uterine masses are uncommon hyperechoic pelvic neoplasms composed partly of adipose tissue. Because of the high level of echogenicity, these uterine masses can produce produce a sonographic appearance strikingly similar to the "dermoid plug" that is considered characteristic of benign cystic teratomas. The key to distinguishing the two tumors is to ascertain the parent organ: the lipomatous uterine mass should clearly originate from the myometrium. In our experience, however, the origin of some echogenic pelvic masses can be difficult to determine, particularly from the endovaginal

[Cancer-associated cachexia: an unresolved disease].

Cachexia is a systemic wasting condition associated to advanced phases of many cancers, which contributes to significant morbidity and mortality. It is mainly characterized by involuntary weight loss due to muscle wasting often associated with loss of adipose tissue, possibly leading to inanition and death, without treatment to date. Symptomatology covers a complex array of disorders (fatigue, inflammation, pain, anorexia, depression) related to multisystemic impairments progressively affecting numerous organs and tissues (muscle, adipose tissue, brain, immune system, gastrointestinal tract).

Common mechanisms of dysfunctional adipose tissue and obesity-related cancers.

The relation between cancer and metabolic disorders was recognized several decades ago, but the underlying mechanisms involved in cancer development and progression remain obscure. In the last years, many groups have been studying systemic adipose tissue markers in cancer patients. However, few consistent results were obtained. On the other hand, several studies revealed many aspects of adipose tissue physiology in obesity. Nowadays, it is recognized that excessive lipid uptake in adipocytes leads to hypertrophy and consequently to metabolic dysregulation, hypoxia, inflammation, impaired adipo

The role of adipose tissue in cancer-associated cachexia.

Adipose tissue (fat) is a heterogeneous organ, both in function and histology, distributed throughout the body. White adipose tissue, responsible for energy storage and more recently found to have endocrine and inflammation-modulatory activities, was historically thought to be the only type of fat present in adult humans. The recent demonstration of functional brown adipose tissue in adults, which is highly metabolic, shifted this paradigm. Additionally, recent studies demonstrate the ability of white adipose tissue to be induced toward the brown adipose phenotype - "beige" or "brite" adipose

Gastric Angiolipoma: A Rare Entity.

Angiolipoma is a benign tumor composed of adipose tissue and proliferating blood vessels that is commonly found in the subcutaneous tissue of the trunk and extremities. Gastric angiolipoma is a rare entity, and to the best of our knowledge, only 4 cases have been reported in the English-language literature thus far. These tumors may present as gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia or with obstructive symptoms. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is challenging because of nonspecific clinical symptoms and lack of specific findings on imaging studies. The correct diagnosis is usually made by histopat

A rare benign parotid gland tumor: angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipomas are benign neoplasms composed of smooth muscle, vasculature, and mature adipose tissue, which most commonly occur in the kidney and located in the head and neck region. A very rare neoplasm, there are only 3 cases of angiomyolipoma in the parotid gland that have been reported to date. Here, we report a case of a 38-year-old man who had a slow-growing mass in the parotid gland for the past 7 years. The results of a physical examination revealed a rubbery mass that was 2.5 cm in diameter in the below superficial lobe of the left parotid gland. A computed tomographic scan showed a

A rare case of sebaceous lymphadenoma: Cytohistological correlation of preoperative cytomorphologic findings.

We are presenting a case of a 74-year-old female with a parotid gland mass. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the mass demonstrated cohesive groups of epithelial cells with overall bland-appearing nuclei and abundant vacuolated cytoplasm, consistent with sebaceous cells, in a background of polymorphous lymphocytes, scattered histiocytes, and adipose tissue. Immunostains showed that the epithelial cells stain positive for p63, but negative for CD117 and DOG-1. CD3 and CD20 showed a mixture of T- and B-cells. On the PAP-stained slides, there were numerous sac-like structures, consistent with myosp

Incidental superficial soft tissue epithelioid angioleiomyoma.

Epithelioid angioleiomyoma (EALM) is rare in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. To the best of our knowledge, only two previous cases of this tumor have been reported. We document here the case of an 83-year-old woman who underwent complete removal of a squamous cell carcinoma of the retromolar trigone and lymph node dissection of the neck. An incidental EALM was observed in the adipose tissue. The tumor formed a unilocular, poorly demarcated neoplasm measuring 0.3 cm, and showed cavernous angiomatous spaces with villiform growth of large epithelioid cells arranged in clusters. Besides the epi

[Hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma/PEComa and focal nodular hyperplasia in a patient with a previous history of cutaneous melanoma].

Hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms. PEComas concurrent with other hepatic lesions is a very rare occurrence, with only two previously reported cases. We report a primary hepatic PEComa associated with focal nodular hyperplasia in a patient with a previous history of cutaneous melanoma. Diagnostic imaging studies suggested a hepatic adenoma and the patient underwent a segmentectomy. The tumor was mainly composed of epithelioid cells, adipose tissue and smooth muscle fibers intermixed with blood vessels. The neoplastic cells were diffusely i

Laparoscopic management of an ileal lipoma presenting with massive gastrointestinal haemorrhage.

Small bowel lipomas are benign submucosal neoplasm composed mainly of mature adipose tissue. Despite their rare occurrence, lipomas are the second most common benign tumour of the small intestine. These tumours are mostly small in size and remain clinically asymptomatic. However, larger lesions tend to be more symptomatic, presenting with complications such as intussusception, bleeding or obstruction. Definitive surgical or endoscopic intervention is indicated in such symptomatic lipomas. Herein, we describe a rare case of ileal lipoma presenting with ileo-ileal intussusception and a life-thre

Hilar fat invasion is a poorly defined and inconsistently interpreted lung carcinoma staging parameter.

OBJECTIVES: Hilar fat invasion raises the T category of otherwise pT1 lung carcinomas to pT2a. Pathologists were surveyed to better understand their awareness and interpretation of hilar fat invasion. METHODS: Pathologists interested in pulmonary pathology were invited to participate in an online survey of hilar fat invasion assessment. RESULTS: Of 80 respondents, 58% considered hilar fat any fat that is outside the lung but inside the pleural reflection, 32% considered it to be fat inside the pleural reflection near hilar lymph nodes around the main bronchus, and 10% were uncertain or had a

Fat-containing soft-tissue masses in children.

The diagnosis of soft-tissue masses in children can be difficult because of the frequently nonspecific clinical and imaging characteristics of these lesions. However key findings on imaging can aid in diagnosis. The identification of macroscopic fat within a soft-tissue mass narrows the differential diagnosis considerably and suggests a high likelihood of a benign etiology in children. Fat can be difficult to detect with sonography because of the variable appearance of fat using this modality. Fat is easier to recognize using MRI, particularly with the aid of fat-suppression techniques. Althou

Lipomatous salivary gland tumors: a series of 31 cases spanning their morphologic spectrum with emphasis on sialolipoma and oncocytic lipoadenoma.

Lipomatous neoplasms of the salivary glands are rare. Their wide histologic spectrum has not been sufficiently studied. We collected 31 fat-containing salivary gland lesions excluding pleomorphic adenoma and myoepithelioma with lipometaplasia. There were 19 male and 12 female patients aged 7 to 89 years (mean, 53 y). Tumors originated in the parotid (n=29) and the submandibular (n=2) gland. On the basis of the proportion and distribution of adipose tissue and the epithelial type, tumors could be categorized into 3 main groups: ordinary lipoma (n=20) identical to soft tissue lipoma but located

Thymolipoma with sebaceous differentiation: a hitherto unreported variant of thymolipoma.

Thymolipoma is a very rare anterior mediastinal mass of thymic origin, accounting for only 2% to 10% of all thymic neoplasm. Progressive Infiltrative Lipoma of the Masseter Muscle Associated with Unilateral Orofacial Discomfort in a Dog.

Intramuscular lipomas are uncommon benign adipocytic neoplasms characterized by infiltrative growth within skeletal muscle. This report describes the clinical, imaging, surgical, and histopathologic findings of an infiltrative lipoma arising from the masseter muscle in a dog presenting with orofacial discomfort suggestive of neurologic or painful orofacial disorders. Ultrasonography demonstrated heterogeneously hyperechoic adipose tissue within the right masseter muscle. [Tumors of the adipose tissue during 10 years of diagnostic activities (1979-1988)].

Adipose tissue tumors in ten years of diagnostic activity (1979-1988). We have reconsidered our material on tumors of adipose tissue, which were observed for 10 years, from 1979 to 1988, at Istituto di Anatomia Patologica dell'Università degli Studi - Arcispedale S. Anna di Ferrara. The whole collection consists of 772 tumors, 742 lipomas and 30 liposarcomas. We have intended to examine the development of our diagnostic experience through time and compare our data with those of literature. Simple lipomas and fibrolipomas are the most common histological types (78.8%), followed by angiolipomas
