Red Dot Basal Cell Carcinoma: Literature Review of a Unique Clinical Subtype of Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Red dot basal cell carcinoma is a distinctive clinical subtype of basal cell carcinoma. It has been reported in eight individuals with a male to female ratio of 1:1; and the patients' ages ranged from 50 to 74 years. All patients had prior history of actinic keratoses and basal cell carcinoma. In addition, some patients also had prior squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and/or dysplastic nevus. The tumor was usually of recent onset, asymptomatic, and on sun-exposed skin. It was most commonly located on the nose (five patients); other sites were the upper lip, the mid back, or thigh-ea

Clinical and Pathological Characteristics of Skin Cancer Patients at Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing in China, yet large-scale clinical and pathological data from China remain scarce. A retrospective analysis was conducted of 648 histopathologically confirmed skin cancer cases diagnosed at the Dermatology Hospital, Southern Medical University from January 2020 to July 2023. Patient demographics, tumour distribution, histological subtypes, and treatment approaches were evaluated. Squamous cell carcinoma (31.9%) and basal cell carcinoma (31.2%) were the most prevalent, followed by cutaneous lymphomas (13.9%), dendritic cell and histiocytic neoplasms (1

Incidence of invasive cancers following squamous cell skin cancer.

The authors describe the incidence of new primary cancers among 4,639 cases of squamous cell skin cancer (SCC) diagnosed between 1974 and 1994 in the cancer registries of the Swiss cantons of Vaud and Neuchâtel (total person-years at risk = 23,152). Overall, 729 metachronous cancers were observed versus 527.6 expected, corresponding to a standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of 1.4 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.3-1.5). After exclusion of skin cancers, however, 384 second primary neoplasms were observed versus 397.2 expected (SIR = 1.0). Excesses were observed for cancers of the lip (SIR = 3.1)

Scalp basal cell carcinoma: A different entity?

Basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent malignant neoplasm in white-skinned individuals. It develops in different body areas, including in the scalp, which is a unique anatomical region due to the high number of pilosebaceous follicles; the scalp is protected from UV exposure, a main risk factor for basal cell carcinoma development. Moreover, scalp basal cell carcinoma has been described as more aggressive and difficult to treat than other forms of basal cell carcinoma. In this study, we reviewed the clinical and pathological characteristics, risk factors, genetics, and treatment options for

Mohs micrographic surgery of the nail unit and squamous cell carcinoma.

The nail unit can be a challenging anatomic location for surgical removal of neoplasms. Although uncommon, malignancies do affect this specialized epithelial structure. In particular, Bowen's disease and more invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the most common neoplasms to affect the nail unit and surrounding structures. Other neoplasms such as basal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma can also affect the nail unit, but less frequently, and will not be discussed in the scope of this review. Mohs micrographic surgery continues to be the treatment of choice because of the procedure's ti

Cancer arising after pancreas and/or kidney transplantation in a series of 99 diabetic patients.

OBJECTIVE: Recipients of solid organ transplants have an increased risk of developing certain types of malignancies as compared with the general population. The majority of the literature has reported on neoplasms in kidney and heart transplant recipients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We describe 9 neoplasms occurring in 7 out of 73 IDDM patients after simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation. No cases were recorded among 26 IDDM recipients of kidney transplantation. RESULTS: Among the neoplasms found were 2 cases of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD), malignant melan

Checks for chromosomal instability in Gorlin and non-Gorlin basal-cell carcinoma patients.

The naevoid basal-cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder with multiple basal-cell carcinomas, an increased risk for other neoplasms, and various malformations. Chromosome instability has been implicated in the pathogenesis of this syndrome, but these reports are somewhat contradictory. We have investigated five patients, two with confirmed NBCCS and three suspected. No evidence for chromosome instability was found in lymphocytes at three sample times after stimulation using metaphase aberration analysis, sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) in second division cells, or mi

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva in a single lesion.

INTRODUCTION: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) occurrences in the conjunctiva are exceptionally rare. These lesions become exceedingly rarer next to an adjacent area of squamous cell carcinoma. A collision tumor of both basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma is infrequently encountered in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: An elderly male patient was evaluated for concern of ocular surface squamous neoplasia on his left conjunctiva. The lesion appeared as a tan-white elevated lesion with atypical vessels in papillary fronds. The patient underwent surgical excision of the lesion, and the tissue was

Basal cell skin cancer with metastasis to subcutaneous fat-a case report.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a malignant neoplasm of the skin that originates from the cells of the basal layer of the epidermis and is the most common skin cancer worldwide, accounting for more than 75% of all nonmelanoma skin cancers. About 4 million BCCs are diagnosed annually worldwide. Despite being the most common skin tumor, metastasis is rare and occurs in 0.0028%-0.55% of cases. In this case report, we present a rare case of giant basal cell carcinoma with metastasis to the subcutaneous fat in a 69-year-old woman.

Vulvar basal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Vulvar basal cell carcinoma is a rare neoplasm that often displays aggressive biologic behavior. Recurrence after simple excision is common, and metastases have been reported. Early diagnosis is essential and rests upon histopathologic examination of biopsy specimens, since the clinical appearance of these neoplasms may be deceptively innocent. CASE: A 65-year-old woman was seen with a nonhealing skin lesion on the right vulva. Physical examination revealed a 0.3 X 0.3 cm crusted papule on the right labium majus. A saucerization biopsy was performed. Histopathologic examination of

Acantholytic Nodular Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Acantholysis is a microscopic finding describing the breakdown of desmosomes of keratinocytes and the formation of intraepithelial clefts after the loss of cohesion of keratinocytes. It can be observed in keratinocytic neoplasms, typically actinic keratoses and squamous cell carcinomas, and defines the acantholytic variants of these entities. Acantholysis has so far been reported in only 4 cases of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), mainly of the superficial type. A case of an otherwise typical nodular BCC showing features of acantholysis is presented here. Because BCCs are keratinocytic neoplasms,

Leishmania scar: a risk factor for the development of basal cell carcinomas.

Basal cell carcinoma is a malignant epithelial neoplasm of skin that usually arises in areas of chronic sun exposure. It rarely originates from smallpox vaccination scars, chickenpox scars, previous surgical scars, or burn scars. We present a case of basal cell carcinoma arising on a leishmania scar on the nasal dorsum 30 years after the primary lesion.

Basal Cell Adenoma and Basal Cell Adenocarcinoma.

Basal cell adenoma (BCA) and basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC) are uncommon biphasic salivary gland tumors having morphologic similarities to other biphasic salivary gland neoplasms having differentiation toward the intercalated ducts of the salivary gland. Both tumors show mixtures of trabecular, tubular, solid, and membranous solid patterns. BCAC is separated from BCA primarily by the presence of invasion in the former. The diagnosis of BCA and BCAC is best carried out with hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections and careful attention to detail of tumors in the differential diagnosis, includin

Basal cell adenoma of palatal glands.

Salivary gland neoplasms represent less than 3% of all tumors in the general population of which benign adenomas account for 65.5%. Basal cell adenoma which is classified as a subtype of monomorphic adenomas accounts for 1-2% of all salivary gland epithelial tumors, and more than 80% of them arise in the major salivary glands, mostly the parotid gland and has female predominance reporting mostly in the elderly age groups. We here report a case of basal cell adenoma of trabecular type in a male patient of age 45 years in the minor salivary glands of left posterior palatal region.

Periocular basal cell carcinoma in a donkey: case report.

In horses, basal cell neoplasms are uncommon benign tumors with slow growth mostly reported in the skin and eyelid. Malignant presentation is even more uncommon. This report describes a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in the periocular region of a 10-year-old donkey. The animal presented good body condition and a neoformation in the right eye, noted 3 months prior to hospital admission. At the ophthalmological examination, the mass was identified above and adhered to the cornea, measuring 3.0 × 2.5 × 1.5 cm. Cytology revealed a suspicion of a malignant epithelial neoplasm, characterized by groups o

Basal cell carcinosarcoma: a systematic review and reappraisal of its challenges and the role of Mohs surgery.

Basal cell carcinosarcoma (BCCS) is a rare malignant biphasic tumor of the skin, composed of epithelial and mesenchymal components, and may be underdiagnosed. We sought to summarize the current understanding of BCCS including its reported history, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment. We also reappraise and present our recommendations of histological interpretation for its diagnosis and treatment. A systematic review of PubMed and EMBASE, from inception of databases to December 1, 2022, identified all reported cases of basal cell carcinosarcoma. A total of 34 reports containing 54 p

Gorlin syndrome associated with midline nasal dermoid cyst.

Gorlin syndrome is an autosomal dominant multisystem disorder characterised by multiple basal cell naevi, cysts of the jaw, pits of the palms and soles, skeletal anomalies, and various other defects. Patients with Gorlin syndrome have a predisposition to basal cell carcinomas and other neoplasms. This is the first report to describe the coexistence of Gorlin syndrome and a nasal dermoid cyst. A 4 year old girl was diagnosed with medulloblastoma and treated with surgery and radiation therapy. A genetic evaluation was sought because of the brain tumour, multiple small naevi localised mostly on t

Morphology of hyperplastic and neoplastic lesions in the clitoral and preputial gland of the F344 rat.

We reviewed 359 neoplasms of the preputial and clitoral glands of F344 rats to classify the different types of tumors, in relation to the normal anatomy and histology of the glands. Most tumors originated from the acinar or ductal cells; only one tumor originated from mesenchymal tissue. They were classified as adenomas, adenocarcinomas, squamous cell or basal cell carcinomas, and mixed cell carcinomas. Only one tumor metastasized to the lung.

[Impact of the HIV infection on skin cancers].

A series of skin cancers are more frequent or show a worse course and outcome in HIV-treated patients. The leading neoplasms correspond to basal and squamous cell carcinomas, some primary cutaneous lymphomas and malignant melanomas. In these patients, early diagnosis and radical treatment on sight should be considered.
