RATIONALE: A solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon soft tissue tumor that was first discovered in the pleura. Although SFTs have been documented in other extra-pleural sites, an SFT in the thyroid gland is highly unusual. An SFT of the thyroid gland can be difficult to diagnose, and there is little information about their Underlying biological behavior.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of a 63-year-old man with a progressively growing left-neck mass detected 1 month ago, which was pathologically confirmed to be a benign SFT of the thyroid gland.
DIAGNOSIS: Postoperative pathological

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle-cell neoplasm more commonly involving the pleura, but recognized also in other tissues. Nineteen patients with SFT arising from the thyroid gland have been reported in the literature. The present report reviews these cases and discusses epidemiology, etio-pathogenesis, clinical-pathologic characteristics, differential diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of thyroid SFT.

Penile soft tissue tumors comprise 5% of tumors at this site and most have been reported as isolated case reports. The purpose of this review is to aid the practicing surgical pathologist in distinguishing penile soft tissue tumors, such as sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinoma, from other prognostically and therapeutically important entities in the differential diagnosis. Clinical presentation, management, prognosis and factors influencing behavior are reviewed. The immunohistochemical profiles and salient morphologic clues that may help distinguish penile spindle cell tumors from sarcomatoid c

In a 2-year rat carcinogenicity study, pegvisomant injected subcutaneously on a daily basis at doses of 0, 2, 8, or 20 mg/kg/day produced malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFHs) at the injection sites of 3 male rats (5%) given 8 mg/kg/day and 5 males (8%) given 20 mg/kg/day. MFH was characterized by unencapsulated dermal and subcutaneous sheets of fusiform and spindle-shaped cells sometimes with areas of round and/or irregular, pleomorphic cells and variable numbers of large multinucleated giant cells. Some regions of MFH had a fibroblastic appearance with streaming cells forming storiform patt

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are relatively rare neoplasms thought to originate from the submesothelial connective tissue. SFTs have been described in a variety of sites, including the pleura, orbit, lower respiratory tract, peritoneal cavity and heart. These neoplasms are usually benign, though locally aggressive, and metastatic behaviour has been observed in some cases. We describe a case of a 61-year-old man presenting with weight loss, poor appetite, malaise, worsening dyspnoea on exertion and lower extremity oedema, who was found to have a gigantic-21×21 cm-tumour occupying the entire

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is rare mesenchymal neoplasm that has been originally and most often documented in the pleura. Recently, the ubiquitous nature of the SFT has been recognized with reports of involvement of numerous sites all over the body, i.e, upper respiratory tract, breast, somatic tissue, mediastinum, head, and neck, etc. The diagnosis of SFT still remains an enigma in our field. Furthermore, malignant SFT is extremely rare and only two cases have been reported in the oral cavity till date. Here, we present a rare case report of an aggressive solitary fibrous tumor which presen

Several cases of elastofibromatous lesion affecting the oral mucosa have been reported. Clinically, these lesions may appear as small exophytic lesions or less often as white lesions. Therefore, fibrous hyperplasia and leukoplakia are not uncommonly considered in clinical differential diagnosis. Microscopically, elastic and fibrous connective tissue deposition is seen. Rarely, elastofibromatous changes can be detected when assessing intraoral lesions, including cysts, salivary gland neoplasms, and epithelial dysplasia. Here we report two oral lesions showing elastofibromatous changes, expandin

Perivascular soft tissue tumors are relatively uncommon neoplasms of unclear lineage of differentiation, although most are presumed to originate from or differentiate to pericytes or a modified perivascular cell. Among these, glomus tumor, myopericytoma, and angioleiomyoma share a spectrum of histologic findings and a perivascular growth pattern. In contrast, solitary fibrous tumor was once hypothesized to have pericytic differentiation--although little bona fide evidence of pericytic differentiation exists. Likewise the perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) family shares a perivascular

Dermatofibroma/fibrous histiocytoma is a common tumor of the dermis, composed of myofibroblasts, dendrocytes, and macrophages with characteristic entrapment of dermal collagen fibers at the periphery of the tumor. Various subtypes of dermatofibroma, including cellular, aneurysmal, and atypical dermatofibroma, are associated with an increased risk of recurrence, especially with incomplete excision. Two cases of benign fibrous histiocytoma with recurrence and metastasis are described. Patient 1 had a cellular fibrous histiocytoma with KIRREL1::PRKCD fusion presenting as a superficial and deep so

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors are rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. They are often of low malignant potential and rarely metastasize. They frequently arise from the pleura and can occur at any soft tissue site in the body. However, these tumors rarely develop in the mesentery, peritoneal cavity or peritoneum.
CASE SUMMARY: We report on a scarce case of solitary fibrous tumor of the rectal mesentery showing sarcomatosis about 4 years after previous tumor resection. This 69-year-old male had no clinical symptoms but was transferred to our hospital because of a suspected tumor recurren

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are generally benign, well-circumscribed soft-tissue tumors of mesenchymal origin. CD34 antigen expression is characteristic for this tumor. A rare subgroup shows malignant histological patterns with aggressive behavior. The common site of occurrence is the pleura, but various other sites, including the head and neck, have been described. We present a 56-year-old, white, female patient with a solitary fibrous tumor developing in the right submandibular salivary gland. The tumor was surgically removed, and no recurrence or metastases have occurred during the 43 mon

Organizing hematomas occur in many locations and simulate neoplasms. They all have similar structure, with a central mass of blood, a wall of granulation tissue, and dense, fibrous tissue at the periphery. There have been sporadic reports of organizing hematoma not only in soft tissue but also in brain, adrenal gland, lung and maxillary sinus. We report a case of nontraumatic head and neck organizing hematoma---one that occurred in the parapharyngeal space (PPS), a site that has not been previously reported. By doing so, since idiopathic organizing hematoma may occur, we hope to promote awaren

A woman in her 70s presented with a small subcutaneous retrosacrococcygeal mass and a history of elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate present for several years. It was misdiagnosed as an inflammatory process of unclear origin. She underwent further investigation with the appearance of weight loss and weakness. A sacrococcygeal mass was noted on CT scan. A core needle biopsy was inconclusive for chordoma versus myoepithelioma. Wide surgical resection of the tumour including the coccygeal bone was performed. Following surgery, all the systemic symptoms resolved with normalisation of inflammat

Desmoid tumors are fibrous neoplasms that are infiltrative and locally aggressive. Although they are histologically benign with negligible metastatic potential, recurrence after surgical resection is common. Pharmacotherapy and radiation treatment have been utilized when surgery has been considered unsuitable. Since April 2003, we have used radiofrequency ablation to treat five desmoid tumors in four patients. Complications were seen in two patients; one patient had cellulitis and another had soft tissue necrosis. Clinical follow-up was available for all four patients and ranged from 4-68 mont

Two patients are reported with pleomorphic lipoma, a benign subcutaneous fatty tumor showing atypia in which histologic diagnosis may be difficult. The tumors are well circumscribed lesions, most commonly occurring in the neck and shoulder of middle aged men. An important histologic criteria is the presence of floret-like multinucleated giant cells embedded in a myxoid stroma. Pleomorphic lipoma may be confused with several malignant soft-tissue neoplasms, including myxoid malignant fibrous histiocytoma and variants of liposarcoma. It is important to establish the correct diagnosis to avoid un

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is a rare and usually benign primary neoplasm arising from mesenchymal cells of the submesothelial tissue. We present here the case of a patient diagnosed with CD34-positive advanced malignant solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura whose disease failed to respond to combination cytotoxic chemotherapy agents, but demonstrated a prompt near-complete response to checkpoint blockade treatment using the anti-programmed death (PD)-1 monoclonal antibody pembrolizumab, based on tumor molecular profiling revealing tumoral expression positivity for both programmed deat

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are sub epithelial soft tissue neoplasms in the gastrointestinal tract. Extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (E-GISTs) are rare, comprising 5%-7% of GISTs. A case of a 65-year-old female with abdominal bloating, heaviness, and constipation is reported. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass in the ischioanal region, initially thought to be a solitary fibrous tumor. The mass was completely excised, and pathological examination confirmed it as a C-Kit Negative E-GIST. This case highlights the rarity and uniqueness of the ischioanal mass detected through

The clinical and pathologic features of 25 inflammatory pseudotumors of the small intestine are reported. These rare lesions, which clinically may simulate neoplasms, consist of localized, frequently polypoid masses composed of inflamed fibrous and granulation tissue. Inflammatory pseudotumors may produce intussusception and small-bowel obstruction. Some are found at laparotomy performed for other reasons. The diagnosis of inflammatory pseudotumor usually can not be made until the lesion is examined histogically. Their etiology remains unknown, but their relationship to intestinal ulceration i
