The issue of whether hormones influence malignant melanoma (MM) has been controversial for many years. Although early case reports demonstrated a negative effect of hormones, recent evidence has not supported a potential role for hormones in MM. We address whether exogenous and endogenous hormones influence a woman's risk for MM or affect her prognosis if diagnosed with MM. Multiple epidemiologic studies show the use of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy does not appear to increase a woman's risk for MM. Though meningiomas are benign intracranial tumors, a minor group invades the skull base and the connective tissue of the sinus cavernous inducing neurological deficits. These patients can not be cured by surgical treatment. Therefore, the development of an adjuvant medical therapy has been the goal during the last decade. We report here on different medical concepts which are based on steroids, amines, growth factor antagonists and cytokines. In addition, our data give evidence that the growth of intracranial meningiomas is under multifactorial proliferative control.

A study has been carried out on 116 mammary neoplasias in which the prolactin receptors together with other clinical and hormonal parameters have been determined. A 46.3% frequency of PRLR+ has been obtained as well as a statistically significant correlation between these and blood estradiol (p less than 0.05). PRLR- have greater survival and PRLR may act as a growth factor.

The paper is concerned with the results of radioimmunoassay of the CEA level in the blood serum of 235 patients with breast cancer, 48 patients with fibrous-cystic mastopathies and 51 healthy women. In 100 patients with generalized breast cancer repeated examination of the CEA level was done during drug treatment. The authors showed a possibility to use in practice the results of radioimmunoassay of CEA in patients with breast cancer in early stages as a prognostic test as well as an additional criterion in the evaluation of drug therapeutic efficacy in patients with generalized breast cancer.

Patients treated with tamoxifen (TAM) for primary breast cancer often manifest de novo or acquired resistance, possibly through changes in drug metabolism. Fifty consecutive patients with metastatic carcinoma who underwent cryohypophysectomy were studied. Of these, 26 had breast cancer, 19 had prostatic cancer, one had malignant melanoma, one had cancer of the kidney, and three had metastatic adenocarcinoma from an unknown primary tumour. INTRODUCTION: Leydig cell tumors are sex cord-stromal tumors with sexual steroid production (predominantly testosterone). They account for less than 0.6% of ovarian neoplasms and mostly appear at the age of 28.
HISTOPATHOLOGY: It is a solid yellowish nodular tumor, less than 5 cm in diameter. It consists of polygonal Leydig cells, eosinophillic cytoplasm with lipid vacuole and lipochrome pigments. Nuclei are oval, pleomorphic with rare nucleoli. Hyperthecosis is around the tumor.
