Pleomorphic Adenoma Originating from Heterotopic Salivary Tissue of the Upper Neck: A Diagnostic Pitfall.

Pleomorphic adenoma directly arising in the neck is thought to originate from heterotopic salivary gland tissue. In this article, we present the case of a 55-year-old female patient with a histologically proven pleomorphic adenoma located at the left mandibular angle, anteriorly to the sternocleidomastoid muscle and posteroinferiorly to the submandibular gland. As the patient also had an ipsilateral thyroid nodule with coarse calcifications, clinical and radiological features suggested a possible level II metastatic lymph node. However, ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology and pos

A rare case of granular cell tumor in axillary cavity: an unusual occurrence.

Granular cell tumour (GCT) is a rare soft tissue neoplasm originally thought to arise from skeletal muscle but later recognized as of neural origin. It is most commonly found in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and oral cavity. GCT typically presents as a painless, slow-growing nodule, often asymptomatic, though malignant cases tend to be larger and may present with pain. We present the case of a 48-year-old female that developed a painless subcutaneous swelling in the right axilla, initially suspected to be a sebaceous cyst. In November 2023, the lesion was excised, and histopathology confirmed

Leiomyosarcoma of the tongue with multiple metastases: a case report and review of literature.

Leiomyosarcoma of the tongue is an extremely rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm and only 25 cases have been described in the English-language literature, 22 of which were primary lesions. A case is presented of a 54-year-old female patient diagnosed with primary leiomyosarcoma of the tongue with lung and multiple soft tissue metastases. This case is especially unusual because widespread soft tissue metastases resulted, involving the lung and skeletal muscle in 3 separate sites. Unfortunately, curative treatment was not possible. Chemotherapy using a combination of ifosfamide and doxorubicin w

Alternative therapies in management of leiomyomas.

Leiomyomas are benign soft-tissue neoplasms that arise from smooth muscle. Relief of symptoms (abnormal uterine bleeding, pain, pressure) is the major goal in management of women with significant symptoms. For symptomatic myomas, hysterectomy is a definitive solution; however, there are emerging less-invasive options. Magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasound surgery, cryomyolysis, and temporary occlusion of the uterine arteries are treatment options that are minimally invasive interventions with the benefit of preserving the uterus. This review summarizes procedure techniques, elig

Neuroendocrine tumour metastasis to the orbit.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are tumours that usually arise in the gastrointestinal tract and the bronchopulmonary system. The orbit is a rare anatomical site for their metastases. In the following article we present a case report of a 73-year-old man who was admitted to the Ophthalmology Department because of eye pain and high intraocular pressure in the right eye. There was also eye motility restriction, diplopia, oedema of the eyelid, and subconjunctival haemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumour in the right orbit, probably arising from the inferior rectus muscle. The patient wa

Focal myositis of the tongue presenting as macroglossia.

Focal myositis (FM) is a benign localized inflammatory process of unknown aetiology, which presents as a rapidly enlarging soft-tissue mass that evolves into a localized lesion. It is most often mistaken for a neoplasm. Histologically, it is characterized by marked myopathic changes of the muscle fibres, lymphocytic infiltration and interstitial fibrosis. We describe a case of focal myositis of the tongue and review this rare condition.

[A case of pseudophlebitis of the great saphenous vein: focal nodular myositis of the gracilis muscle].

A case of focal myositis in a healthy 68-year-old woman is described. The patient was admitted for evaluation of a painful soft-tissue mass localised on the medial side of the left thigh, initially misdiagnosed as thrombophlebitis of the v. saphena magna. Laboratory data were normal, in particular sedimentation rate and muscle enzyme levels. After exclusion of venous thrombosis, the mass localised in the left m. gracilis was surgically removed. Histologic examination of the biopsy specimen showed muscle cell necrosis and severe inflammation, with lymphocytic infiltration leading to the diagnos

Low 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT Uptake in Chronic Intramuscular Nodular Fasciitis.

Nodular fasciitis is an uncommon benign mass-forming myofibroblastic proliferation, most frequently found in the upper limbs, with only rare intramuscular cases. We describe herein a case of chronic nodular fasciitis of the left triceps muscle with a low Ga-labeled prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) ligand uptake on PET/CT. Ga-PSMA ligands bind to PSMA-expressing prostate cancer cells, but uptake has also been demonstrated in other solid neoplasms and various benign lesions. Nodular fasciitis should be included in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue lesions with variable Ga-PSMA u

Angiomyolipoma of Uterine Cervix: Report of a Rare Case.

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is classified as perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasm (PEComas) and is commonly seen in the kidney. AML is a solid mesenchymal neoplasm rarely encountered at the extrarenal site. Extrarenal AML is infrequently seen in the female genital tract. Four cases of AML of the cervix have been reported in the literature to our knowledge. We report a case of a 44-year-old female patient who presented with complaints of "lower abdominal pressure" and a history of post-coital bleeding and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A cyst in the uterine cervix was found incidentally on co

[Therapeutic options for aggressive fibromatosis].

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive fibromatosis, e.g., desmoid tumour, is a rare neoplasm of the connective tissue with local infiltrative growth. Because of the high recurrence rates and destruction of the surrounding tissue, these tumours are classified as semi-malignant. However, desmoid tumors tend not to metastasise. Arising from deep musculoaponeurotic structures, a monoclonal proliferation of fibroblasts occurs. Radical surgical treatment with tumour excision accompanied by radiotherapy is the current standard therapy that can be supplemented by pharmacological treatment in a few cases. PATIENTS

Histopathology of the minor duodenal papilla.

The minor duodenal papilla, which is the orifice of the accessory, or dorsal, pancreatic duct/Santorini duct, mostly accompanied by pancreatic tissue, is situated about 2 cm ventroproximal to the major duodenal papilla. The patency of the terminal accessory pancreatic duct (APD) is recognized in about half or more of cases, and is related to the degree of fibrosis. The APD is lined with simple columnar epithelium and encircled by a smooth muscle layer. It is still controversial whether or not these muscle tissues comprise a sphincter muscle. Pancreatic tissue was found in about 80% of cases in

Coexisting angiomyolipoma and renal cell carcinoma in a kidney of an elderly woman: case report and review of the literature.

Angiomyolipoma is a well described but relatively uncommon benign renal neoplasm composed of varying admixtures of mature adipose tissue, smooth muscle, and thick-walled blood vessels. The incidence of angiomyolipoma is about 0.3% overall. It frequently occurs in patients with tuberous sclerosis. Even more uncommon is the simultaneous occurrence of angiomyolipoma and renal cell cancer in the same kidney in a patient without tuberous sclerosis.

Late-onset acquired generalized lipodystrophy with muscle involvement.

Acquired generalized lipodystrophy (ALG) is a rare disorder characterized by the loss of adipose tissue and often found in association with metabolic disorders. Its onset is extremely rare in patients over 65 years, with only 1 case reported to date. Furthermore, there have been no reports of associated muscle involvement in ALG. We present the case of a 78-year-old woman who experienced almost complete loss of subcutaneous adipose tissue over 6 years. During this period, she was also successively diagnosed with hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, hypothyroidism, hepatic steatosis, and diabete

Fine needle aspiration of poorly differentiated rhabdomyosarcoma presenting with quadriparesis. A case report.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of metastatic poorly differentiated rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in lymph node specimens by fine needle aspiration presents a difficult problem since it is virtually indistinguishable from other small round cell neoplasms. CASE: Fine needle aspiration was performed under radiologic guidance on an extradural, space-occupying lesion of unknown etiology in the region of the C-6 and C-7 vertebrae in a 20-year-old male who was hospitalized with quadriparesis. Cytologic examination suggested a metastatic tumor consistent with the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. A subsequent searc

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the lung: immunohistochemical and ultrastructural observations and review of the literature.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm that most commonly occurs in the parotid gland but can also arise in minor salivary glands. We report a case of a primary epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the lung. The patient is a 55-year-old black woman who presented with increasing shortness of breath and productive cough of at least 3 months duration. A left lower lobe endobronchial lesion was identified radiographically. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed, obtaining a circumscribed, nonencapsulated 3.9 cm tan mass which was attached

Osteoma in medial pterygoid muscle: an unusual case.

Soft tissues osteoma is an execeedingly rare tumour. It is a benign often asymptomatic neoplasm. The exact etiology and pathogenesis of osteomas are unclear. This paper report a case of peripheral osteoma located in the middle part of the medial pterygoid muscle of the right infratemporal region in a 60-year-old woman. Clinical examination did not reveal any extraoral swelling, facial asymmetry or difficulty in mouth opening, and the regional lymph nodes were non-palpable. Panoramic radiograph show a round well-circumscribed free/independent radiopaque mass located in the middle part of the ri

First Case Report of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma Diagnosed After Transcervical Fibroid Ablation.

Background: Uterine fibroids are benign monoclonal neoplasms of the myometrium, representing the most common female pelvic neoplasms globally. Treatments may be invasive, such as hysterectomy and myomectomy, non-invasive, such as medical therapy or focused ultrasound, or minimally invasive, such as transcervical radiofrequency ablation (TFA). To date, more than 12,000 women have been treated worldwide using TFA with the Sonata® System. Case Presentation: We present the first case report of TFA on a presumptive fibroid that was initially reclassified as a STUMP (smooth muscle tumor of uncertain

Multiple cutaneous plexiform schwannomas. Report of a case and review of the literature with particular reference to the association with types 1 and 2 neurofibromatosis and schwannomatosis.

Plexiform schwannomas are relatively rare, benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors, which usually arise in either the dermis or subcutaneous tissue, although rare cases originate in skeletal muscle or other deep somatic soft tissue sites. These tumors may occur singly or as multiple lesions and may be localized to one anatomic site or diffusely distributed. Rare cases have been associated with "schwannomatosis" as well as type 1 neurofibromatosis (von Recklinghausen's disease). We report an unusual case of multiple cutaneous plexiform schwannomas associated with bilateral acoustic neuromas as we
