Background and objective Staghorn calculi are big, intricate kidney stones that reside in the calyceal and renal pelvis. They present serious surgical difficulties and a high risk of complications. A less invasive option to standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mini-PCNL) uses smaller tract diameters to minimize bleeding, postoperative pain, and hospitalization while preserving similar stone-free rates (SFR). However, there is still little proof of its effectiveness and safety for staghorn stones, especially in local contexts. This study aimed to asse

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a common procedure for kidney stone removal, involving a small incision in the back and insertion of a nephroscope to extract the stones. Recent advancements include super-mini PCNL, employing smaller instruments for less invasive access to the kidney. However, conventional PCNL often requires tract dilation, which can lead to potential complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report presents the successful application of our surgical technique using the basic principles of PCNL with the aid of a pediatric trocar cystostomy and ultrasoun

The objective is to evaluate clinical indications and safety of tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for the treatment of stones in upper urinary tract. A total of 231 subjects accepted to undergo tubeless PCNL, both micro-channel and standard operation were performed. After PCNL, renal gastrostomy tube was not placed also catheters and double-J stents were subsequently removed 3-5 and 14-28 days, respectively. Primary PCNL resulted in stone clearance of 98.27 %. There were five cases of postoperative hemorrhage with bleeding of about 500 ml, which was stopped by keeping patients in be

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has gained popularity in an attempt to decrease morbidity and accelerate discharge. Recently, ambulatory tubeless PCNL has been reported. There are no data, however, regarding readmission rates of patients who had ambulatory PCNL. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess rates of emergency department (ED) visits and readmissions postambulatory PCNL.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all ambulatory PCNL cases at two institutions between March 2007 and December 2013 was performed. Preoperative, intrao

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the treatment of choice for large kidney calculi, staghorn calculi, and calculi that are multiple or resistant to shock wave lithotripsy. In many centers, PCNL is performed under general anesthesia. However, complications under spinal anesthesia can be less frequent. We evaluated the impact of spinal anesthesia on intra-operative and postoperative outcome in patients undergoing PCNL.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The intra-operative and postoperative anesthetic and surgical outcomes were evaluated in 160 consecutive patients who underwent PCNL und

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSES: In the era of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL), there are still some patients who will require percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Our experience with this procedure is reviewed and discussed.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty five patients with a mean age of 7.9 years (10 months-14 years) underwent 67 PCNL procedures on 62 renal units between September 1997 and April 2001. Of the patients, 13 had previous open renal surgery, 4 had a solitary kidney, 4 were SWL failures, 2 had osteogenesis imperfecta, one had anuria secondary to bilateral calculi, 2 had poorly fu

We evaluated 23 male spinal cord injury patients who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy for the success rate of stone removal and the incidence of operative complications. There were 18 quadriplegic and 5 paraplegic patients, and 5 had bilateral procedures. Of the kidneys 7 had staghorn calculi, 8 had pelvic and caliceal combinations, 6 had large multiple caliceal stones, 4 had large (more than 2.5 cm.) pelvic stones and 3 had pelvic stones less than 2.5 cm. Placement of a nephrostomy tube and stone extraction were performed as a single procedure with the use of general anesthesia in all b

Background: Updated in 2019, the American Urological Association's (AUA) Best Practice Statement on Urologic Procedures and Antimicrobial Prophylaxis outlines prophylaxis for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Recent studies have challenged these recommendations. We hypothesized that endourologists do not routinely follow the AUA's statement on antibiotic use during PCNL and assessed their prescribing patterns. Methods: A 24-question survey was distributed to members of the Endourological Society. The primary outcome was adherence to the AUA's recommendations. Two multiple logistic regressio

Unilateral acquired diaphragmatic paresis is a known complication of thoracic surgeries. Direct mechanical injury to the phrenic nerve during surgery results in this complication. However its occurrence post-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has not been described. We report a 43-year-old man who underwent prone PCNL for endourological management of left complete staghorn calculus. Access via the 10th left intercostal space, under fluoroscopy, was carried out to remove the calculus. Post-operative, the routine chest radiograph revealed left hemidiaphragmatic blunting. Computerized tomography

UNLABELLED: Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the gold standard treatment of large kidney stones that has rare but serious complications such as gallbladder injury. In this article, a 62-year-old woman with a right lower kidney who was scheduled for PCNL was presented. The patient had acute abdomen on the first day after PCNL, so explorative laparotomy and cholecystectomy were done. The patient was discharged five days after surgery in good condition.
SECTION HEADINGS: Endourology/Stone Disease.

Urinothorax is a cause of pleural effusion that is often missed due to its perceived rarity. Here, we present a case of urinothorax secondary to percutaneous nephrolithotomy resulting in lung collapse and death. This case highlights urinothorax as a cause of death, its biochemical profile, and diagnostic features on autopsy. A 39-year-old female presented to the ED with low back pain and dysuria. Abdominal and pelvic CT showed a large staghorn calculus in the right kidney which was then treated with percutaneous nephrolithotomy. On post-operative day (POD) 1, the patient was febrile, had decre

PURPOSE: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) plays an integral role in treatment of renal stones. Creating percutaneous renal access is the most important and challenging step in the procedure. To facilitate this step, we evaluated our novel mobile augmented reality (AR) system for its feasibility of use for PCNL.
METHODS: A tablet computer, such as an iPad[Formula: see text], is positioned above the patient with its camera pointing toward the field of intervention. The images of the tablet camera are registered with the CT image by means of fiducial markers. Structures of interest can be sup

Aim of this study was to investigate the effects of operation time of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) on renal function and hemodynamic response. Thirty-four patients (14 male, 20 female) with normal renal function who underwent unilateral single-tract PCNL between December 2010 and June 2011 were included in the study. The age, sex, stone size, grade of hydronephrosis, operative time, access pole, shock number of lithotripter, complications, stone-free rate, and hemodynamic parameters during operation were recorded. Total blood count and oxidative stress parameters such as paraoxonase 1 (

Three patients underwent laparoscopic assisted percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). A kidneys, ureter and bladder (KUB), and intravenous pyelogram (IVP) of the first patient showed a 3 cm calculus in a right side ectopic pelvic kidney overlying on the sacrum. The second patient had bilateral ectopic kidneys. The right kidney was located in the true pelvis without calculi and the left kidney was located in the iliac cavity with a 2.5 cm calculus in the renal pelvis. The third one had a 4 cm stone in the infundibulum of the upper calyx of the left pelvic ectopic kidney. All of them had a history
