A retrospective analysis of all primary upper urinary tract tumours (300) filed in the pathology department of a regional hospital in Hong Kong during 1972-87 showed that renal cell carcinoma (143) was the commonest malignant tumour. Transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis (62) was the next most frequent. Fibromas, which occurred as frequently as angiomyolipomas (28) and outnumbered tumours such as squamous cell carcinoma (13) and nephroblastoma (12), were of little clinical significance since they were invariably incidental findings. Nephrectomies were seldom performed for kidneys inv

In an audit of 17,417 necropsies from 1939 to 1989 at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, Victoria, 46 congenital tumors comprising 24 teratomas, 8 vascular tumors, 6 neuroblastomas, three rhabdomyomas, two mesoblastic nephromas, one thyroid adenoma, one hepatic adenoma and one cerebellar medulloblastoma were found. The teratomas were generally large tumors and, because of their size and location, incompatible with extrauterine life. Ten teratomas were associated with polyhydramnios, three with obstructed labour, five of the fetuses were hydropic and four had malformations at sites distant

INTRODUCTION: Non-Wilms renal tumors represent a compelling subset of childhood renal tumors. However, their relative rarity renders accurate diagnosis, and therapy challenging which in some instance is inferred from their adult counterparts.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and analyze the diagnostic challenges, therapies and, outcomes of non-Wilms renal tumors at the largest tertiary cancer centre in India.
METHODS: All patients with histologically confirmed non-Wilms renal tumours diagnosed in the paediatric oncology unit of Tata Memorial Hospital between 2006 and 2019 were included.

Mesenchymal neoplasms of the kidney present challenges because they are uncommon, and because perinephric soft tissue biopsies are sometimes submitted as "kidney" masses, causing diagnostic confusion. Here, the author thoroughly reviews mesenchymal neoplasms of the kidney, including metanephric stromal tumor, classic and cellular congenital mesoblastic nephroma, anaplastic sarcoma and clear cell sarcoma of the kidney, malignant rhabdoid tumor, PEComa/angiomyolipoma, and anastomosing hemangioma. The author also discusses perinephric myxoid pseudotumor of fat, as well as diagnostic pitfalls pres

We report a case of a rare cystic renal tumor previously termed cystic hamartoma of the renal pelvis. A 53-year-old woman presented to her gynecologist with menometorrhagia. She subsequently had a computed tomographic scan that demonstrated an incidental cystic mass in the lower pole of the left kidney. Histologically, the tumor was composed of a mixture of benign mesenchymal and epithelial components. The stroma consisted of spindle cells with monomorphic nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm that resembled smooth muscle and that reacted positively with antibodies to alpha-smooth muscle

Four hypercalcemic infantile renal tumors were shown to secrete glucagon-like peptides. These unusual tumors were histologically classified as rhabdoid tumors of the kidney (3 cases) and a cellular mesoblastic nephroma (1 case). Elevated G-29 and G-37 glucagon levels were detected in the plasma and tumor extracts as well as in the supernatants of cultured tumor explants. Three of these tumors were heterotransplanted into the nude mice and serially passaged from a mouse to another. The glucagon level decreased in the transplanted tumor extracts with the number of passage.

Solid fetal renal masses are a rare finding on antenatal ultrasound, with hydronephrosis and cystic disease of the kidney usually being the most common causes for fetal renal enlargement. Herein we report a case of a solid fetal renal mass which was detected on third trimester antenatal ultrasound scanning. This renal mass was evaluated by MRI in the postnatal period and diagnosis confirmed by histological analysis, after surgical excision. Also discussed are the differential diagnoses and imaging features of other solid fetal renal masses, including congenital mesoblastic nephroma, nephroblas

Fetal abdominal tumors are rare, usually benign, and cause a great deal of anxiety for expectant parents and the physicians counseling them. In this paper the author reviews the most common fetal abdominal tumors in the liver (hemangioma, mesenchymal hamartoma, hepatoblastoma, metastases) and the kidney (congenital mesoblastic nephroma, Wilms tumor, malignant rhabdoid tumor, and clear cell sarcoma), and suprarenal mass lesions (adrenal neuroblastoma, adrenal hemorrhage, and subdiaphragmatic extralobar pulmonary sequestration). The author describes the imaging approach, imaging appearance and d

Abdominal masses are frequent in newborn infants, two thirds being renal in origin. After thorough palpation of the abdomen, cystic masses must be differentiated from solid masses by ultrasound examination. The common benign cystic masses include hydronephrosis, multicystic dysplasia, polycystic disease, and adrenal hemorrhage. Solid masses include renal vein thrombosis, a renal ectopic kidney, or horseshoe kidneys. Occasionally, a renal mass may be malignant and correspond to congenital mesoblastic nephroma, Wilms' tumor, or fetal hamartoma. Whatever the nature of the renal mass, early interv

The following combination of findings were established by histological examination of biopsy or autopsy material in an 11-day-old male baby: congenital mesoblastic nephroma, nodular renal blastema, dysgenetic pancreatic cyst, "cytomegaly" of the adrenal cortex, hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the islets of Langerhans, hypoplasia of the thymus and the lymphatic tissue. Since some of these changes constitute the characteristic histological findings in the Wiedemann-Beckwith syndrome and the remainder can be readily reconciled with it, the assignment of this case to this syndrome is discussed. BACKGROUND/AIM: Changes in the expression of neo-angiogenic molecules in the primary tumor and its metastases may significantly affect the efficacy of therapies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the alterations in aminopeptidase N (APN/CD13) and αvβ3 integrin receptor expression in serially transplanted mesoblastic nephroma tumor (Ne/De) metastases using 68Gallium (68Ga)-labeled NOTA-cNGR and NODAGA-RGD radiotracers and preclinical positron emission tomography (PET) imaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Primary and metastatic mesoblastic nephroma (Ne/De) tumors were induced by subrenal capsule

A 25 4/7 week boy was born with a prenatal diagnosis of polyhydramnios and enlarged left kidney. Over the next 2 months serial ultrasounds demonstrated abnormal growth of the kidney, with 28.9% split function. At gestational age 39 4/7, he underwent a left radical nephrectomy. Pathology revealed congenital mesoblastic nephroma with mixed classic and cellular features. This case was puzzling due to prenatally diagnosed renal enlargement in a premature infant and inconclusive post-natal ultrasonographic imaging. Although the patient had paraneoplastic signs of polyhydramnios and hypertension, th

In this review article the benign tumors and tumor-like lesions of the adult kidney are discussed. The incidence of benign renal tumors is low, especially when compared to renal cell carcinomas, as most are detected incidentally or at autopsy. Some of these tumors, as their names imply, are unique to the kidney, e.g., renal adenoma, metanephric adenoma, renal oncocytoma, nephrogenic adenofibroma, mesoblastic nephroma, capsuloma, juxtaglomerular cell tumor, renomedullary interstitial cell tumor (medullary fibroma), cystic nephroma, cystic partially differentiated nephroblastoma, and cystic hama

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Renal tumors are rare in infants less than 6 months of age and may have associated paraneoplastic symptoms. To better define the characteristics of these tumors the authors reviewed their 10-year institutional experience.
METHODS: The authors searched the pathology database to identify all renal tumors resected at their institution since 1992 (after IRB approval and guidelines). The clinical presentation, operative details, pathology, and outcome for all children < or = 6 months of age were reviewed.
RESULTS: Of 101 children who had renal tumors resected during this perio

The clinical and the gross and microscopic features of two multicystic masses in adult female patients are described. These met the Powell and Boggs and Kimelstiel criteria for multilocular renal cyst (MRC). MRC may be the common process and the gross expression of different disease entities with different biological significance which must be distinguished clinically and anatomopathologically. We present the data for differential diagnosis of conditions that may present as MRC: partially differentiated cystic nephroblastoma, mesoblastic congenital cystic nephroma, lymphangioma (more common in
