Oleandrin Promotes Apoptosis in an Autophagy-Dependent Manner in Gastric Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The medicinal phytochemical oleandrin (Ole) is obtained from the Nerium oleander plant. The exact relationship between Ole-induced apoptosis and autophagy in gastric cancer (GC) is unclear despite the fact that it has outstanding anti-tumor capabilities. This research aimed to demonstrate how autophagy and Ole-induced apoptosis interact in GC. METHODS: The Cell Counting Kit (CCK)-8 assay and colony formation assays were employed to evaluate cell proliferation. Cellular apoptosis was evaluated with Calcein/Propidium Iodide (PI) assays and flow cytometry. Confocal and electron micro

Applicability of different woody plant species to vertical flow constructed wetland.

The plant species used in constructed wetlands are mainly aquatic herbaceous, most of which tend to die during winter in subtropical areas. At present, very few studies have examined the performance of woody plants in constructed wetlands. In order to increase plant diversity and improve purification ability of vertical-flow constructed wetland during winter, 10 woody plant species were tested by establishing the microcosms simulating vertical-flow constructed wetlands. Their applicability was integrally evaluated, on basis of their adaptability, rhizospheric enzyme activity, and rhizospheric

Dual activities of the anti-cancer drug candidate PBI-05204 provide neuroprotection in brain slice models for neurodegenerative diseases and stroke.

We previously reported neuroprotective activity of the botanical anti-cancer drug candidate PBI-05204, a supercritical CO2 extract of Nerium oleander, in brain slice and in vivo models of ischemic stroke. We showed that one component of this neuroprotective activity is mediated through its principal cardiac glycoside constituent, oleandrin, via induction of the potent neurotrophic factor brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). However, we also noted that the concentration-relation for PBI-05204 in the brain slice oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) model is considerably broader than that for ol

Toxic Plants Potentially Impacting the Health Status of Livestock in St. Kitts-A Surveillance Study.

Tropical regions are characterized by exceptional biodiversity, including extremely diverse flora. Many plants produce chemical compounds that function as defense mechanisms, some of which are toxic to mammals, including livestock species. However, documentation of toxic plants in the Caribbean region remains limited. The present study aimed to identify toxic and potentially toxic plant species affecting livestock on the island of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) through surveys of a representative number of farms across all nine parishes. An extensive literature review was performed in order to

Higher plants as bioindicators of sulphur dioxide emissions in urban environments.

The evaluation of certain vascular plants that grow in the city of Madrid as biomonitors of SO(2) air pollution in urban environments has been carried out. Total concentration of sulphur in leaves of the chosen higher plants as well as other parameters in close relation to this contaminant (visible injury symptoms, chlorophyll a- and b-content and peroxidase activity) have been determined in order to study the spatial distribution and temporal changes in SO(2) deposition. Results obtained show that coniferous species such as Pinus pinea, were more sensitive to SO(2) atmospheric concentration t

Unveiling the Pharmacognosy of an Aerial Parasite: Scurrula cordifolia and the Transfer of Medicinal Potential from Host to Mistletoe.

Mistletoes are obligate hemi-parasitic angiosperms that establish complex ecological and physiological relationships with their forest hosts through specialized haustorial systems. To maintain nutrient flux, these parasites withstand more negative water potentials than their hosts, utilizing succulent leaves for strategic rehydration. Although root parasites have been extensively studied, the absorptive structures and host-parasite dynamics of the Loranthaceae family, the largest group of mistletoes, remain under-investigated. This study explores the genus Scurrula, specifically the less-studi

Accumulation of Cr, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn by plants in tanning sludge storage sites: opportunities for contamination bioindication and phytoremediation.

Tanning sludge enriched with high concentrations of Cr and other metals has adverse effects on the environment. Plants growing in the metalliferous soils may have the ability to cope with high metal concentrations. This study focuses on potentials of using native plants for bioindication and/or phytoremediation of Cr-contaminated sites. In the study, we characterized plants and soils from six tanning sludge storage sites. Soil in these sites exhibited toxic levels of Cr (averaged 16,492 mg kg-1) and other metals (e.g., 48.3 mg Cu kg-1, 2370 mg Zn kg-1, 44.9 mg Pb kg-1, and 0.59 mg Cd kg-1). Di

Advances in Synergistic Combinations of Chinese Herbal Medicine for the Treatment of Cancer.

The complex pathology of cancer development requires correspondingly complex treatments. The traditional application of individual single-target drugs fails to sufficiently treat cancer with durable therapeutic effects and tolerable adverse events. Therefore, synergistic combinations of drugs represent a promising way to enhance efficacy, overcome toxicity and optimize safety. Chinese Herbal Medicines (CHMs) have long been used as such synergistic combinations. Therefore, we summarized the synergistic combinations of CHMs used in the treatment of cancer and their roles in chemotherapy in terms
