Cellular schwannoma: a variety of schwannoma sometimes mistaken for a malignant tumor.

Fourteen cellular schwannomas, a variety of peripheral nerve sheath tumor showing a predominantly compact cellular growth, no formed cellular palisades or Verocay bodies, but the ultrastructure of schwannomas, are reported. A presumed nerve of origin was identified in three instances. The tumor had no sex predeliction; the mean age was 48. The neoplasm is usually well encapsulated and most commonly presents in the neck, posterior mediastinum, or pelvis. Because of a variety of confusing histologic features, including dense cell bundles and fascicles, storiform areas, a moderate mitotic activit

[Massive benign pleural schwannoma].

Schwannoma is a neoplasm of the peripheral nerve sheath that develops from schwann's cells. Pleural involvement is uncommon, and typically originates from an intercostal nerve of the posterior-superior mediastinum to then extend along the parietal and mediastinal pleura. We report a case of benign schwannoma of the right hemithorax, which we believe to be the largest ever reported at this time. The clinical presentation, acute respiratory failure, was unusual. The imaging findings of this tumor are described.

Nasal schwannoma.

A 36-year-old man with a nasal septal mass is presented. The diagnosis of a benign neoplasm arising from peripheral nerve Schwann cells was made by excisional biopsy. A benign nerve sheath tumor may be either a schwannoma or neurofibroma. Schwannomas may be distinguished from neurofibroma by clinical and histologic criteria. Malignant degeneration and intracranial extension may complicate the course of a nasal schwannoma. Complete excision is the preferred therapy.

Magnetic resonance appearance of peripheral nerve sheath tumors.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to evaluate 22 histologically proven peripheral nerve sheath tumors, approximately two-thirds of which arose in the lower extremity. The histologic distribution was as follows: 12 schwannomas, 7 neurofibromas, and 3 malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (2 of which occurred in patients with neurofibromatosis). Most lesions demonstrated an intermediate to moderately bright signal on T1-weighted images and were minimally inhomogeneous. All lesions were moderately bright on proton-density-weighted images and bright on T2-weighted images, again with var

Recent Advances in the Diagnosis and Pathogenesis of Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1)-associated Peripheral Nervous System Neoplasms.

The diagnosis of a neurofibroma or a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) often raises the question of whether the patient has the genetic disorder neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) as well as how this will impact the patient's outcome, what their risk is for developing additional neoplasms and whether treatment options differ for NF1-associated and sporadic peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Establishing a diagnosis of NF1 is challenging as this disorder has numerous neoplastic and non-neoplastic manifestations which are variably present in individual patients. Further, other genetic dis

Hybrid peripheral nerve sheath tumors, including a malignant variant in type 1 neurofibromatosis.

The authors report a small case series of hybrid nerve sheath tumors occurring in the setting of type 1 neurofibromatosis. Four lesions were benign and consisted of plexiform neurofibromas with considerable areas of perineuriomatous differentiation in patients with type 1 neurofibromatosis. In these lesions, biphasic (Schwannian and perineuriomatous) differentiation was apparent on immunohistochemistry, with the perineuriomatous areas staining for epithelial membrane antigen, glut-1, and claudin-1 and being negative for S-100 protein. Three patients were members of a single family, with a hist

Localized, plexiform, diffuse, and other variants of neurofibroma in 12 dogs, 2 horses, and a chicken.

In humans, neurofibroma and schwannoma are distinct entities within the group of benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors. In the veterinary literature, these tumors are often classified together simply as benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors, and diagnostic criteria for their subclassification are not well established. We describe peripheral nerve sheath tumors with microscopic, immunohistologic, and ultrastructural features similar to those in subtypes of human neurofibroma in 12 dogs, 2 horses, and 1 chicken. Dogs were of different breeds and were aged 2 months to 15 years. The canine tumors

Ornithine decarboxylase levels in peripheral nerve sheath tumors from NF1 patients.

BACKGROUND: The study was conducted to determine the level of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity in several types of peripheral nerve sheath tumors to assess ODC as a potential target for alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), an irreversible inhibitor of ODC. METHODS: A formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded peripheral nerve sheath tumor tissue microarray was developed in the Department of Anatomic Pathology, MD Anderson Cancer Center. ODC levels were measured using immunofluorescence with a polyclonal antibody to ODC and Alexa-Fluor 647 goat anti-rabbit IgG using previously validated and estab

Primary intracranial malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour responding to chemotherapy.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNST) are a rare variety of soft tissue sarcomas (STS) arising from major peripheral nerve branches and typically located in the lower extremity, chest wall or the retroperitoneum. It is a biologically aggressive neoplasm for which the treatment of choice is surgery, but usually requires a multimodality approach, having been generally labelled as chemoresistant. We present a case of MPNST located intracranially with a good response to chemotherapy.

Low-grade Schwann cell neoplasms with leptomeningeal dissemination: clinicopathologic and autopsy findings.

Leptomeningeal dissemination of low-grade Schwann cell neoplasms is an exceptionally rare occurrence and has not been well documented in the literature. We encountered 2 cases of leptomeningeal dissemination of low-grade Schwann cell neoplasms. Patient 1 was a 63-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 and a progressive low-grade malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor developing from a diffuse/plexiform orbital neurofibroma that arose in childhood. The neoplasm demonstrated local and leptomeningeal dissemination intracranially leading to the patient's death. There was partial loss of H3K

Rare adrenal schwannoma treated with robotic-assisted adrenalectomy: A case report.

Schwannomas are benign neoplasms that arise from peripheral nerve sheaths. Typically found in peripheral nerves of the head, neck, and extremities, these tumors seldom arise in the retroperitoneum. We report the case of a 50-year-old male with a 5 cm right adrenal mass removed via robotic-assisted laparoscopic approach due to concerns for adrenocortical carcinoma, which surgical pathology revealed to be a rare adrenal schwannoma. This is the reported case.

Neoplasms with neural differentiation: a review. Part II: Malignant neoplasms.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) encompass a wide and unusual group of neoplasms with features of neural differentiation. They most commonly present as spindle cell neoplasms and it can be difficult to differentiate them from other spindle cell neoplasms such as leiomyosarcomas, fibrosarcomas and synovial sarcomas. Strict criteria need to be applied in order to make the diagnosis of MPNSTs. Helpful features include contiguity with a nerve or an association with von Recklinghausen disease. The use of immunohistochemical stains may also help to confirm the diagnosis. Markers suc

Diagnostically Challenging Spindle Cell Neoplasms of the Retroperitoneum.

The diagnostic spectrum of spindle cell neoplasms arising in the retroperitoneum is wide and, in the presence of commonly shared morphologic features, it may be challenging to establish a correct diagnosis in certain cases. Beyond seemingly undifferentiated spindle cell morphology, most neoplasms may reveal distinctive adipocytic, smooth muscle or myofibroblastic or nerve sheath differentiation and show additional diagnostic clues or characteristic molecular abnormalities. Obtaining sufficient and representative biopsy material, a thorough work-up, and extensive sampling of gross specimens fol

[Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with perineural differentiation (malignant perineurinoma) of the cervix uteri].

The paper describes a case of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with perineural differentiation and at the rare site of the cervix uteri in a 57-year-old patient. The diagnosis was established on the basis of extensive immunohistochemical examination, by excluding the similar neoplasms and detecting an immunophenotype characteristic of perineural differentiation. There are data available in the literature on the morphological and immunophenotypical characteristics of this tumor.

[Malignant tumors of the peripheral nerve sheath (MPNST) after irradiation].

A case of relapsed malignant tumor of the brachial plexus and its nervous roots (MPNST) was observed in a patient treated with radiotherapy for Hodgkin's disease 24 years previously. A known risk of radiation therapy is the induction of secondary neoplasms, less commonly malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). The clinico-pathological features of this rare tumor are presented and the possible relationship between radiotherapy and MPNST is discussed.

Von Recklinghausen's disease associated with malignant peripheral nerve sheath thmor presenting with constipation and urinary retention: a case report and review of the literature.

A malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a rare neoplasm arising from peripheral nerve sheaths. We herein report the first case of MPNST originating from the left gluteal muscle region, diffusely extending into the adjacent small pelvis and perineum. The patient was a 25-year-old man who presented with symptoms of progressive constipation and urinary retention associated with weight loss. The patient had a family history of neurofibromatosis type 1. Physical examination showed numerous cafe-au-lait spots and sessile cutaneous neurofibromas. A computed tomography scan revealed a gia

Reexcision Perineural Invasion and Epithelial Sheath Neuroma Possibly on a Spectrum of Postinjury Reactive Hyperplasia Mediated by IL-6.

Epithelial sheath neuroma is a rarely recognized but established entity in the medical literature. First described in 2000 by Requena et al, there have only been 7 published cases to date, mostly in female patients and presenting as symptomatic solitary lesions on the back without a known history of trauma. In 2006, Beer et al described and reviewed a dozen cases in which epithelial sheath neuroma-like features were seen in the advent of a surgical procedure, which was termed "re-excision perineural invasion" and attributed to possible eccrine duct implantation during surgery. Our case is a 66

Management of an incidental malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour in the parapharyngeal space.

BACKGROUND: Parapharyngeal space tumours are uncommon and represent 0.5-1 per cent of all head and neck neoplasms; 20-30 per cent of these are malignant. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours are rare and mostly encountered in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1. Only four cases of parapharyngeal space tumours have been reported in the English language in patients without neurofibromatosis type 1. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 64-year-old man with no stigmata of neurofibromatosis type 1, in whom a mass in the left pre-styloid region of the parapharyngeal space was an incidental
