MALFORMATIONS OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM INDUCED BY NEUROTROPIC DRUGS IN MOUSE EMBRYOS.

Out of a sample of fifteen neurotropic drugs consisting of seven antidepressants and anti-psychotics, two antianxiety drugs, one anticonvulsant, three opiates and two synthetic analgesics, twelve were found to be teratogenic for mouse embryos, causing malformations of the central nervous system. After single injections of the teratogenic dose administered at the very beginning of the ninth day of gestation, four days later, i.e. in 13-day-old embryos, the induced defects appeared to make up a recurring syndrome of malformations which consists of several abnormalities present in various frequen

Hypervitaminosis a in early human pregnancy and malformations of the central nervous system.

A case of malformations of the fetal central nervous system following hypervitaminosis A in early pregnancy is reported. The mother was treated with 150 000 IU vitamin A daily during gestation days 19 to 40. Determination of urinary oestriol carried out in the 42nd week of pregnancy revealed a very low excretion (4.2-6.6) mumol/24 h). Induced delivery resulted in a microcephalic child who died after 18 min. The child had multiple malformations of the central nervous system and very small adrenal glands (1.5 g; normal 11 +/- 4 g). The very low urinary oestriol excretion is well explained by the

Congenital central nervous system malformations in piedmontese calves-part 1. structural brain disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital central nervous system (CNS) malformations in cattle are likely underreported, and their true incidence, clinical spectrum, and etiological factors remain poorly characterized. This study describes the clinical and pathological features of congenital structural brain anomalies in Piedmontese calves. METHODS: In this prospective observational study (2021-2025), Piedmontese calves with suspected congenital CNS anomalies underwent clinical and neurological examinations, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, diagnostic imaging (CT/MRI in selected cases), molecular testing for reg

Cavernous venous malformations in and around the central nervous system. Part 2: Intradural.

Cavernous venous malformations (CavVMs) account for a spectrum of lesions with a shared pathogenesis. Their anatomical location dictates their clinical features and surgical treatment. Extradural and dura-based CavVMs were discussed in Part 1 of this review. In this part, intradural CavVMs are discussed, encompassing malformations growing within the intradural space without direct dural involvement. In addition to classic intra-axial CavVMs, cranial nerve CavVMs, intraventricular CavVMs, and intradural extramedullary spinal CavVMs are discussed in this group, given the similar natural history

The Relationship Between Fetal Central Nervous System Malformations and Modified Myocardial Performance Index.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal ventriculomegaly, the most commonly identified abnormality of the fetal central nervous system (CNS), has been associated with elevated levels of the modified myocardial performance index (mMPI). However, the impact of other CNS pathologies on mMPI has not yet been evaluated. This study aimed to investigate whether there were changes in the myocardial performance index of fetuses with CNS pathologies without congenital heart diseases. METHODS: A total of 126 singleton pregnant women were included in this study. Sixty-three fetuses had fetal CNS abnormalities of acrania, an

Finding the Nidus: Detection and Workup of Non-Central Nervous System Arteriovenous Malformations.

Vascular anomalies are a diverse group of pathologic conditions. They have different manifestations, natural histories, and treatments. Compared with other vascular malformations, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are considered the most symptomatic and difficult to manage. AVMs inherently progress and have a high rate of recurrence after treatment. Imaging helps provide an accurate and early diagnosis, which can then be used to direct appropriate management, with embolization evolving as the primary therapy. Thus, radiology plays a crucial role in the detection, workup, and management of AVM

Risk of recurrence in major central nervous system malformations between 1976 and 2005.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the current publication is to review isolated central nervous system malformations (CSMs) using a database in excess of 75 000 cases, with special regard to the risk of recurrence of these malformations alone or in combination. METHODS: In the period between 1 January 1976 and 31 December 2005, among the 75 320 documented cases, consultations were requested due to earlier isolated CSMs in the patients' histories in 3030 cases (4.2%). Processing the data we only considered disorders of genetic origin, and that was why we excluded the cases due to intrauterine infection.

[Diagnosis of malformations of the central nervous system using foetal magnetic resonance imaging].

INTRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT: Ultrasonography is the preferred diagnostic imaging technique for studying the intrauterine foetus. Yet, occasionally certain circumstances arise where it is necessary to use other techniques in order to achieve a better analysis of the foetal structures. The development of ultra-high speed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has now been applied to the study of the foetus, since it allows images to be obtained in extremely short times and the effects of movements by the mother or the foetus have little influence on the results. It is a type of imaging that does not

Disruption of the mouse L1 gene leads to malformations of the nervous system.

The adhesion molecule L1 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. L1 is involved in various recognition processes in the CNS and PNS, and binding to L1 can activate signal transduction pathways. Mutations in the human L1 gene are associated with a variable phenotype, including mental retardation and anomalous development of the nervous system, referred to as 'CRASH' (corpus callosum hypoplasia, retardation, adducted thumbs, spastic paraplegia, and hydrocephalus). We generated an animal model of these conditions by gene targetting. Mutant mice were smaller than wild-type and were less sen

Significance of a single umbilical artery in fetuses with central nervous system malformations.

To determine whether the presence of a single umbilical artery (SUA) is useful information for evaluating fetuses with known central nervous system (CNS) malformations, the present study reviewed 107 consecutive cases of fetal CNS malformations (hydrocephalus, meningomyelocele, Dandy-Walker malformation, and holoprosencephaly) identified by prenatal sonography. Of the 107 fetuses studied, 20 (18%) had a SUA noted at the time of delivery or autopsy and 87 (81.3%) had two umbilical arteries. Of the 20 fetuses with a SUA, six were prospectively recognized on sonography, six were identified retros

Maternal zinc status: a determination of central nervous system malformation.

Maternal serum zinc concentrations were estimated during 244 normal pregnancies and 15 abnormal pregnancies. The serum zinc concentrations were lower in the anencephalic pregnancies than in the normal control subjects. The serum zinc levels in women whose pregnancies terminated in a spontaneous abortion were normal. There was no variation of serum zinc level with gestational age between 15 to 18 weeks in normal pregnancies.

Central nervous system heterotopia in the lung of a fetus with cranial malformation.

Heterotopic glial tissue was seen within the lungs of a newborn with a cranial malformation and anterior spina bifida. Histological examination of the lung showed solid islands of glial tissue intermingled with pulmonary structures. Well developed bronchioles that were in continuity with the main bronchial tree could be identified within the nodules. The central cystic cavity of the nodules is a bronchial lumen probably dilated by the respiratory movements. Several hypotheses have been elaborated to explain the heterotopic glial tissue in lung. The presence of an anterior spina bifida suggests

Elucidating the pathogenesis behind arteriovenous malformations of the central nervous system: a bibliometric analysis.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are vascular malformations of the central nervous system (CNS) with potential for significant consequences. The exact pathophysiologic mechanism of AVM formation is not fully understood. This study aims to evaluate bibliometric parameters and citations of the literature of AVMs to provide an overview of how the field has evolved. We performed an electronic search on Web of Science to identify the top 100 published and indexed articles with the highest number of citations discussing the pathogenesis of AVMs. This study yielded 1863 articles, of which the top 1

CAMT in a female with developmental delay, facial malformations and central nervous system anomalies.

Congenital amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia (CAMT) is a rare disorder characterized by thrombocytopenia and absence or decline in the number of megakaryocytic precursors in the bone marrow. It is caused by mutations in the thrombopoietin receptor gene, c-mpl, involved in the proliferation and differentiation of megakaryocytes and platelets. The association between CAMT and central nervous system (CNS) anomalies has been reported in the literature, albeit not very frequently. Here we present a unique case where CAMT appeared associated to cerebellum agenesis, hypoplasia of the corpus callosum a

Spina bifida with associated malformations of the central nervous system in Dorper-cross sheep.

CASE HISTORY: In 2008, six lambs within a flock of Dorper-cross sheep were born with musculoskeletal and neurological disease. Clinical signs included hindlimb weakness, and urinary incontinence. CLINICAL FINDINGS: All lambs had focal, inverted areas of alopecic skin over the caudal sacrum, and short, often kinked tails. Four affected lambs were subject to euthanasia, and necropsied. On gross examination, the arches of sacral vertebrae were absent, and spinal nerves and meninges were adherent to the overlying subcutis. Other gross lesions included narrow, elongated skulls, herniation of the o

Molecular genetic and morphologic integration in malformations of the nervous system for etiologic classification.

Molecular genetics has brought new insight into the etiology and pathogenesis of nervous system malformations, and provided a means of precise genetic diagnosis including the prenatal detection of many cerebral dysgeneses. Many cerebral malformations previously thought to be a single disorder are now known to be common end results of many independent genetic mutations. Examples are holoprosencephaly and lissencephaly. Gradients of genetic expression along the axes of the neural tube established at the time of gastrulation may explain many varieties and clinical expressions of cerebral malforma
