Central nervous system complications in AIDS patients are common and often the cause of severe morbidity and mortality. Most symptomatic central nervous system complications in AIDS patients involve the brain, principally in the form of HIV encephalitis, various other forms of infection, or development of neoplasms. The imaging findings are important to recognize because in many instances the underlying brain lesions are responsive to medical therapy.

We present a murine model of trilateral retinoblastoma. Ocular retinoblastoma and central nervous system tumors are observed in a line of mice formed by the transgenic expression of SV40 T-antigen. An oncogenic protein known to bind to the retinoblastoma gene product (p105-Rb) is specifically expressed within retinal cells in this model. All animals that carry this genetic alteration develop multifocal retinal tumors. Midbrain tumors are observed in 15% of ocular tumor-bearing animals, and these arise ventral to the cerebral aqueduct at the level of the pineal gland. Both ocular and central ne

Schwannomas are common peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Cavernous hemangiomas are vascular tumors that can affect any organ system. The coexistence of cavernous hemangioma with peripheral nervous system neoplasms is a rare occurrence. So far, 37 cases have been documented, and they have been divided into two categories: conjoined association (neoplasms discovered within the tumor tissue) and discrete association (neoplasms discovered outside the tumor tissue, thus placing neoplasms and tumors in close proximity but in different locations). Schwannomas and neurofibromas are the most prevalent tu

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is related to higher mortality but it is not entirely evident which causes of death explain this. The objective of this study was to assess the causes of death in a nationwide cohort of clinically verified AD cases and compare the causes to a matched comparison cohort without AD.
METHODS: Cohort of all community-dwellers with clinically verified AD residing in Finland on 31 December 2005 (n = 27,948) and a matched comparison cohort without AD (n = 27,948). Mortality (2006-2012, n = 30,641, 54.8%) and causes of death were obtained from register. Cause of de

Neuro-oncology is a rapidly evolving subspecialty that involves the management of patients with primary or metastatic central and peripheral nervous system neoplasms, as well as any other disorders or complications affecting the nervous system that result either directly or indirectly from central nervous system or systemic malignancies and related treatment. Neurologists serve a critical role in the multidisciplinary management of these complex patients. As leaders of the Child Neurology Society Special Interest Group in NeuroOncology, we propose ways to provide sufficient exposure, minimize

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are aggressive neoplasms composed predominantly of undifferentiated cells that show evidence of neural differentiation. Although their classification has been controversial, PNETs are well recognized primary tumors of both central and peripheral nervous systems. PNETs must be distinguished from other round-cell tumors, including Ewing's sarcoma, lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and small cell carcinoma. Intraspinal PNETs are rare neoplasms that are usually metastatic in origin. We describe the eighth reported primary PNET of the cauda equina that developed i

In patients with neoplasms located outside the central nervous system can appear degenerative changes within nervous tissue. Neuropathological investigations have been done on 101 cases with acute Non-Lymphoblastic Leukaemias (ANLL) and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas (NHL). Cerebellar degenerative changes especially granular layer rarefaction or atrophy appear more frequently in ANLL than in NHL.

The MRI appearance of intraventricular neoplasms is often nonspecific, however knowledge of patient age and tumor location facilitates the formulation of a differential diagnosis. Imaging and pertinent clinical features of the following intraventricular neoplasms are reviewed: ependymoma, subependymoma, central neurocytoma, subependymal giant cell tumor, choroid plexus tumors, medulloblastoma, meningioma, chordoid glioma, rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor, central nervous system lymphoma, and metastasis.

UNLABELLED: Central diabetes insipidus (DI) is a rare clinical entity characterized by low circulating levels of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) presenting with polyuria and volume depletion. Pituitary surgery is the most common cause of central DI in adults. Pituitary and hypothalamic disease, particularly invasive neoplasms, rarely cause DI, being idiopathic cases responsible for the majority of non-surgical cases. HIV patients, especially those with poor virulogical control, are prone to the development of CNS neoplasms, particularly lymphomas. These neoplasms usually become manifest with mass e

Chronic forms of the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) occur infrequently in childhood. We describe three pediatric patients with chronic SIADH. In two patients the persistent SIADH was associated with neoplasms of the central nervous system while in the third patient it was due to congenital anomalies of the central nervous system. We describe the clinical course and management of each patient, including the long-term use of furosemide taken orally once a day.

BACKGROUND: While DNA methylation signatures are distinct across nervous system neoplasms, it has not been comprehensively demonstrated whether transcriptomic signatures exhibit similar uniqueness. Additionally, no large-scale dataset for comparative gene expression analyses exists. This study addresses these knowledge and resource gaps.
METHODS: We compiled and harmonized raw transcriptomic and clinical data for neoplastic (n = 5,402) and nonneoplastic (n = 1,973) nervous system samples from publicly available sources, all profiled on the same microarray platform. After adjusting for surroga

BACKGROUND: Prolactin (PRL) is a hormone synthesized in both the pituitary gland and extrapituitary sites. It has been associated with the occurrence of neoplasms and, more recently, with central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms. The aim of this study was to evaluate prolactin expression in primary central nervous system tumors through quantitative real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry (IH).
RESULTS: Patient mean age was 49.1 years (SD 15.43), and females accounted for 70% of the sample. The most frequent subtype of histological tumor was meningioma (61.5%), followed by glioblastoma (22.9%). T

In rats of the first generation subjected to transplacental DMBA action with subsequent (at the age of 3 months) induction of persistent estrus, the incidence of tumours significantly increased, particularly, those of the nervous system and the mammary gland. Rats of the second generation with induced persistent estrus and not exposed to DMBA developed neoplasms of the nervous system and kidneys which were not observed in the intact control animals. This fact suggests persistence of DMBA transplacental carcinogenic effect in a series of generations.

Little is known about specific clinical conditions that lead to hospitalization of nursing home patients. To explore this, the authors examined the hospitalizations of 128 nursing home residents and compared them with hospitalizations of 320 patients from the outpatient clinic. Hospitalized nursing home patients were older, were admitted to medical services more frequently, and had more nonspecific complaints on admission. Nursing home patients were hospitalized most frequently for diseases of the circulatory system (16 per cent), respiratory system (14 per cent), and genitourinary system (12

Germ cell tumours of the central nervous system and tumours of the sellar region represent a diverse group of neoplasms. These tumours affect both paediatric and adult patients and represent some of the most common central nervous system tumours as well as rare entities. Diagnosis frequently relies on tissue sampling, and intraoperative consultation is often needed to guide surgical management. The focus of this article is to provide a reference for the intraoperative cytology of these entities. The cytological features of these tumours as well as their differential diagnoses are described.

Neurologic disease occurs frequently in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and a large body of literature now exists detailing the various infections, neoplasms, and other conditions that can affect the central nervous system (CNS) or the peripheral nervous system in children and adults with AIDS, persistent generalized lymphadenopathy, or (in some cases) only serologic evidence of retroviral infection. Although certain opportunistic infections (toxoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, and herpesviral infections) and CNS lymphomas o

Choroid plexus neoplasms are rare epithelial tumors of the central nervous system. A carcinoma of the choroid plexus occurred in a child from a family with the breast cancer-sarcoma syndrome (Li-Fraumeni or SBLA syndrome), an inherited condition characterized by the development of diverse neoplasms (sarcoma, breast cancer, brain tumors, leukemia, adrenal cortical carcinoma, and others). Choroid plexus carcinomas were identified in two kindreds previously reported with the syndrome. The literature contains reports of choroid plexus neoplasms occurring in families and in individuals with multipl
