Neural network-based method for diagnosis and severity assessment of Graves' orbitopathy using orbital computed tomography.

Computed tomography (CT) has been widely used to diagnose Graves' orbitopathy, and the utility is gradually increasing. To develop a neural network (NN)-based method for diagnosis and severity assessment of Graves' orbitopathy (GO) using orbital CT, a specific type of NN optimized for diagnosing GO was developed and trained using 288 orbital CT scans obtained from patients with mild and moderate-to-severe GO and normal controls. The developed NN was compared with three conventional NNs [GoogleNet Inception v1 (GoogLeNet), 50-layer Deep Residual Learning (ResNet-50), and 16-layer Very Deep Conv

Computer-aided detection of breast cancer on mammograms: a swarm intelligence optimized wavelet neural network approach.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Accurate early detection can effectively reduce the mortality rate caused by breast cancer. Masses and microcalcification clusters are an important early signs of breast cancer. However, it is often difficult to distinguish abnormalities from normal breast tissues because of their subtle appearance and ambiguous margins. Computer aided diagnosis (CAD) helps the radiologist in detecting the abnormalities in an efficient way. This paper investigates a new classification approach for detection of breast abnormalities in digital m

Computer-assisted image interpretation: use of a neural network to differentiate tubular carcinoma from sclerosing adenosis.

Measurement of nuclear and glandular size and shape features was carried out on 18 cases of sclerosing adenosis and 18 cases of tubular carcinoma. Modified Bonferroni analysis showed that glandular surface density and the coefficient of variation of luminal form factor were significant in discriminating between these two lesions. These two histologic features, together with the diagnosis, were used to train a neural network implementing a backpropagation algorithm. Following training, the network correctly classified 33 of the 36 cases in the training set (92%). Furthermore, the network correc

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks Provide Motion Grading for High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography of the Scaphoid.

In vivo high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) studies on bone characteristics are limited, partly due to the lack of standardized and objective techniques to describe motion artifacts responsible for lower-quality images. This study investigates the ability of such deep-learning techniques to assess image quality in HR-pQCT datasets of human scaphoids. In total, 1451 stacks of 482 scaphoid images from 53 patients, each with up to six follow-ups within one year, and each with one non-displaced fractured and one contralateral intact scaphoid, were independently gr

Computational Methods for Continuous Eye-Tracking Perimetry Based on Spatio-Temporal Integration and a Deep Recurrent Neural Network.

The measurement of retinal sensitivity at different visual field locations-perimetry-is a fundamental procedure in ophthalmology. The most common technique for this scope, the Standard Automated Perimetry, suffers from several issues that make it less suitable to test specific clinical populations: it can be tedious, it requires motor manual feedback, and requires from the patient high levels of compliance. Previous studies attempted to create user-friendlier alternatives to Standard Automated Perimetry by employing eye movements reaction times as a substitute for manual responses while keepin

Training and Validating a Deep Convolutional Neural Network for Computer-Aided Detection and Classification of Abnormalities on Frontal Chest Radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are a subtype of artificial neural network that have shown strong performance in computer vision tasks including image classification. To date, there has been limited application of CNNs to chest radiographs, the most frequently performed medical imaging study. We hypothesize CNNs can learn to classify frontal chest radiographs according to common findings from a sufficiently large data set. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our institution's research ethics board approved a single-center retrospective review of 35,038 adult posterior-anterior chest radio

Cascaded cross-attention transformers and convolutional neural networks for multi-organ segmentation in male pelvic computed tomography.

PURPOSE: Segmentation of the prostate and surrounding organs at risk from computed tomography is required for radiation therapy treatment planning. We propose an automatic two-step deep learning-based segmentation pipeline that consists of an initial multi-organ segmentation network for organ localization followed by organ-specific fine segmentation. APPROACH: Initial segmentation of all target organs is performed using a hybrid convolutional-transformer model, axial cross-attention UNet. The output from this model allows for region of interest computation and is used to crop tightly around i

A computational study on the optimization of transcranial temporal interfering stimulation with high-definition electrodes using unsupervised neural networks.

Transcranial temporal interfering stimulation (tTIS) can focally stimulate deep parts of the brain related to specific functions using beats at two high frequencies that do not individually affect the human brain. However, the complexity and nonlinearity of the simulation limit it in terms of calculation time and optimization precision. We propose a method to quickly optimize the interfering current value of high-definition electrodes, which can finely stimulate the deep part of the brain, using an unsupervised neural network (USNN) for tTIS. We linked a network that generates the values of el

Neural Network Optimization of Ligament Stiffnesses for the Enhanced Predictive Ability of a Patient-Specific, Computational Foot/Ankle Model.

Computational models of diarthrodial joints serve to inform the biomechanical function of these structures, and as such, must be supplied appropriate inputs for performance that is representative of actual joint function. Inputs for these models are sourced from both imaging modalities as well as literature. The latter is often the source of mechanical properties for soft tissues, like ligament stiffnesses; however, such data are not always available for all the soft tissues nor is it known for patient-specific work. In the current research, a method to improve the ligament stiffness definitio

Using a speech perception neural network computer simulation to contrast neuroanatomic versus neuromodulatory models of auditory hallucinations.

A number of studies suggest that schizophrenia may arise from overzealous pruning of synapses that are an extension of normal developmental pruning during adolescence. Moreover, there has been a long history of studies suggesting that this disorder arises from alterations in the dopaminergic neuromodulatory systems. In order to further assess and compare these two hypotheses, a computer simulation of some aspects of speech perception was developed utilizing a recurrent, backpropagation model of working memory previously reported by Elman . This system was found to produce spontaneous percepts

An intelligent computational framework combining neural networks with complex Pythagorean fuzzy FUCA for airspace capacity evaluation and traffic forecasting.

The contemporary aviation system demands intelligent airspace capacity assessment and traffic prediction, which are essential towards maximizing operational efficiency, safety, and strategic planning. But there are few studies that combine predictive learning with complex fuzzy decision-making, and all three, which are nonlinear traffic dynamics, complex-valued expert uncertainty, and complex decision-making. To overcome uncertainty, vagueness, and complex expertise evaluations that are part of airspace management, this paper suggests a new hybrid framework that integrates both neural networks
