The vagus nerve supports diverse autonomic functions and behaviors important for health and survival. To understand how specific components of the vagus contribute to behaviors and long-term physiological effects, it is critical to modulate their activity with anatomical specificity in awake, freely behaving conditions using reliable methods. Here, we introduce an organ-specific scalable, multimodal, wireless optoelectronic device for precise and chronic optogenetic manipulations in vivo. When combined with an advanced, coil-antenna system and a multiplexing strategy for powering 8 individual

Penile erection occurs in response to tactile, visual, and imaginative stimuli in humans. In animals olfactory and auditory cues are particularly important. The participation of multiple sites with the brain and spinal cord, and coordination of somatic and autonomic pathways make sexual behavior in general, and erection in particular, vulnerable to neurologic injury and disease. Sites within the brain and spinal cord act in concert to process, coordinate, then distribute the neural inputs necessary for sexual behavior including erection. Activation of neurons in some of these regions either ph

The ossification pathways of both vertebral centra (i.e., vertebral bodies) and neural arches were studied in human embryos and fetuses (CR-length between 38 and 116 mm). A clearing and double-staining method for whole embryo or fetus, using alcian blue and alizarin red S, allowed an easy and precise detection of the morphology of the whole vertebral column and every single vertebra. Both cartilaginous and bony components were clearly visible. Different temporal and topographical patterns of ossification were shown for the centra and arches; the latter were respectively proximal-distal (i.e.,

Emerging evidence links cardiovascular disease (CVD) to organ-to-organ signaling that extends beyond the heart. The spleen is increasingly recognized as an innervated immune organ that rapidly remodels after cardiovascular injury and, in turn, regulates myocardial inflammation, repair, and remodeling. Human studies support clinical relevance through associations between splenic imaging phenotypes and cardiovascular risk or prognosis, while animal studies provide mechanistic support through spleen-targeted perturbations and mapping of immune trafficking and secreted mediators. This review synth

This scoping review aims to synthesize evidence regarding the neural mechanisms and pathways underlying postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). We systematically searched the PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases up to 2024. The findings indicate that PONV is a common complications after surgeries involving anaesthesia and can also lead to severe postoperative discomfort. Various surgical procedures and anaesthesia methods can trigger PONV, and the underlying neural mechanisms and signalling pathways are complex. It is currently assumed that these pathways do not exist independently

The acceptance of oestradiol signalling through receptors found in the cell membrane, as well as, the nucleus, has provided for a re-examination of the timing and location of the actions of oestradiol on neural circuits mediating sexual receptivity (lordosis). Oestradiol membrane signalling involves the transactivation of metabotrophic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) that transduce steroid information through protein kinase C signalling cascades producing rapid activation of lordosis-regulating circuits. It has been known for some time that oestradiol initially produces an inhibition of the media

PURPOSE: It is well established that contrast sensitivity is reduced in glaucoma. This study explored whether such contrast processing abnormalities consist of an absolute threshold level difference or a problem with contrast gain control.
METHODS: Seventeen patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and 17 approximately age-matched control subjects participated. Subjects were tested foveally and midperipherally (12.5 degrees ). Subjects with glaucoma were tested in a peripheral region of relatively normal visual field (neighboring locations required to be within the normal 95% confidence limi

To determine the role played by the giant fiber interneurons (GFs) in coordinating the jumping stages of visually elicited and olfactory-induced fight initiation we have recorded extracellularly from the cervical connective nerve during flight initiation. A spike is recorded from the cervical connective upon brain stimulation that has the same threshold as does activation of the tergotrochanteral muscle (TTM) and dorsal longitudinal muscles (DLMs). A consistent time interval occurs between the spike and activation of the TTM. Thus, the spike probably results from activity in the GFs. The time

Despite very different functions, studies increasingly report that there may be a potential central nervous anatomical connection between the heart and the small intestine. In this study, the central nervous anatomical relationship between the heart and small intestine was studied via a viral tracer. Pseudorabies virus (PRV) syngeneic strains with different fluorescent reporter genes (eGFP or mRFP) were microinjected into the heart walls and small intestinal walls of male C57BL/6J using glass microelectrode. The results showed that the co-labeled nuclei in the brain were lateral periaqueductal

Current information about pyloric relaxation is not sufficient. For this reason, our study aimed at measuring pyloric relaxation correctly and determining the role of the intrinsic and extrinsic neural pathway in pyloric relaxation. Five groups of dogs were used: five dogs had an intact gastrointestinal tract (control group); five dogs had transection and reanastomosis of the antrum 3 cm proximal to the pylorus (antral transection group); five dogs had extrinsic pyloric denervation (denervation group); five dogs had transection and reanastomosis of the antrum with extrinsic pyloric ring denerv

An inability to process auditory information, especially speech, characterizes many children with learning and attention problems. Our working hypothesis is that these speech-sound perception problems arise, at least in some cases, from faulty representation of the speech signal in central auditory centers. Preconscious neurophysiologic representation of sound structure by central auditory pathway neurons can be reflected by subcortical and cortical aggregate neural responses. These neurophysiologic responses can be modified by perceptual learning. Our research has shown that some children wit

Orthopedic surgeons and neurologists manage many of the same clinical manifestations, including sensory disturbances and muscle weakness in the upper and lower limbs, and gait impairment, and both emphasize anatomical diagnosis. However, their respective diagnostic processes differ. Orthopedic surgeons identify the responsible anatomical structures and interpret symptoms based on physical examination maneuvers and imaging findings. In contrast, neurologists map neurological findings onto neural pathways, proceeding from localization of the lesion to characterization of the clinical pattern and

While posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is known to associate with an elevated risk for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), few studies have examined mechanisms underlying this link. Recent studies have demonstrated that neuro-immune mechanisms, (manifested by heightened stress-associated neural activity (SNA), autonomic nervous system activity, and inflammation), link common stress syndromes to MACE. However, it is unknown if neuro-immune mechanisms similarly link PTSD to MACE. The current study aimed to test the hypothesis that upregulated neuro-immune mechanisms increase MACE ris

Memory formation and sleep regulation are critical for brain functions in animals from invertebrates to humans. Neuropeptides play a pivotal role in regulating physiological behaviors, including memory formation and sleep. However, the detailed mechanisms by which neuropeptides regulate these physiological behaviors remains unclear. Herein, we report that neuropeptide diuretic hormone 31 (DH31) positively regulates memory formation and sleep in Drosophila melanogaster. The expression of DH31 in the dorsal and ventral fan-shaped body (dFB and vFB) neurons of the central complex and ventral late

The topic of human adult neural plasticity and neurogenesis is of great interest for medical and scientific community, but it is also largely debated. In the last years, an increasing interest has been paid to the olfactory system, and particularly to the plasticity of the olfactory bulb (OB). While the molecular/cellular mechanisms underlying OB plasticity remain a matter of debate, measurements of the OB using magnetic resonance imaging clearly indicate that it is a highly plastic structure. In this review, we present results regarding the plasticity of the human adult olfactory system.

Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS) is a condition causing intense pelvic pain and urinary symptoms. While it is thought to affect millions of people and significantly impair quality of life, difficulty with diagnosis and a lack of reliably effective treatment options leave much progress to be made in managing this condition. We describe what is currently known about the immunological and neurological basis of this disease, focusing on the interactions between the immune and nervous system. Evidence for immune involvement in IC/BPS comes from its high co-occurrence with known

BACKGROUND: Earlier work with neurological patients has shown that the visual perception of object size and orientation depends on visual pathways in the cerebral cortex that are separate from those mediating the use of these same object properties in the control of goal-directed grasping. We present evidence suggesting that the same dissociation between perception and action is evident in the visual processing of object shape. In other words, discrimination between objects on the basis of their shape appears to be mediated by visual mechanisms that are functionally and neurally distinct from

Neuronal pathway finding is crucial for structured cellular organization and development of neural circuits within the nervous system. Neuronal pathway finding within the visual system has been extensively studied and therefore is used as a model to review existing knowledge regarding concepts of this developmental process. General principles of neuron pathway finding throughout the nervous system exist. Comprehension of these concepts guides neuroscience nurses in gaining an understanding of the developmental course of action, the implications of different anomalies, as well as the theoretica

BACKGROUND: The brain-heart axis is central to vascular health, yet no imaging biomarkers capture integrated dysfunction across neural and coronary microvascular networks. Although coronary microvascular dysfunction links to cognitive decline, neural correlates connecting cerebral efficiency with coronary physiology remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the Unified Structural and Functional Connectivity (USFC)-a multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) "traffic map" of brain network efficiency-predicts coronary endothelial function and cognition in women with ischemia and no obs
