Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the cervical spine.

BACKGROUND: Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a malignant neoplasm that generally arises from bone and soft tissues, with predilection for young adults. This neural crest origin tumors share biologic and histologic features with Ewing's sarcoma (ES). CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a 22-year-old woman with history of severe progressive neck pain, without radiation, associated with paresthesia in the right arm, and palpable right posterior cervical mass. Neurological examination showed increased reflexes in all four limbs, bilateral Hoffman's sign, right Babinski's sign, and rig

Peripheral neuroectodermal tumor of the vulva: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral neuroectodermal tumors arising from vulva are extremely rare; only 12 cases have been reported so far. These tumors belong to the Ewing sarcoma family of tumors. They occur in bones and variety of soft tissues of chest wall, pelvis, paravertebral region, and lower extremities. Being aggressive tumors, they have poor prognosis. CASE: We report a case of a 20-year-old woman who presented with a 20 x 15 x 10-cm pedunculated mass arising from the right labium majus. Judicious use of a panel of markers led to diagnosis of peripheral neuroectodermal tumor. The patient died of

Imaging of parotid gland primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

A seven-years-old boy presented with recurrent episodes of right parotid gland swelling that was presumptively being treated as sialoadenitis. Interrogation with ultrasonography, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a heterogeneous mass occupying the right parapharyngeal space, imperceptibly merging with adjoining parotid gland, scalloping the vertical ramus of the mandible and involving the base skull with widening of the foramen ovale. The findings at surgery and histopathology provided a final diagnosis of parotid gland primitive neuroectodermal tumor. This report

Uterine primitive neuroectodermal tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primitive neuroectodermal tumors of uterus (PNET) are extremely rare in tumors of the female genital system and therefore there is no sufficient information about their diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. CASE: The case is a 32-year-old, operated in emergency conditions due to intra-abdominal hemorrhage, and discusses our diagnosis and treatment approaches in the light of literature data. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is first report of uterine PNET that presented with intraabdominal hemorrhage due to uterine rupture. Despite advances in therapy, the prognosis i

Primary primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the urinary tract.

Primary primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the urinary tract is a rare disease with aggressive behavior and poor prognosis. We analyzed 851 cases of urinary tract malignancies in our hospital between 1984 and 2004. Only three (0.035%) cases with PNET of the urinary tract were identified. Presenting symptoms included flank pain and hematuria. The first case was a 44-year-old man with left renal PNET who underwent hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy. There was no recurrent tumor at the 4-year follow-up. The second case was a 75-year-old woman with righ

Precocious puberty because of a pancreatic neuroectodermal tumor.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are uncommon, representing approximately 1% of all sarcomas. Pancreatic PNETs have been reported only 12 times in the literature. This report presents the first case of a patient with a PNET exhibiting precocious puberty. The clinical presentation, surgical management, and pathology of this rare pancreatic PNET found in a 2-year-old girl with precocious puberty are discussed.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor after radiotherapy.

A 41-year-old man had a peripheral neuroectodermal tumor develop at the distal third of the fibula 4 years after radiotherapy for relapsed villonodular synovitis. This type of sarcoma usually is classified into the heterogeneic group of small round-cell bone tumors as a subdivision of Ewing's sarcomas. The immuno-staining positivity of the neoplastic cells for the neuron-specific enolase allowed the authors to make the diagnosis of a tumor with neuroectodermal origin. When the histologic study confirmed the diagnosis, the patient was treated with chemotherapy, surgical excision of the tumor, a

Primary primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the cauda equina.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are aggressive neoplasms composed predominantly of undifferentiated cells that show evidence of neural differentiation. Although their classification has been controversial, PNETs are well recognized primary tumors of both central and peripheral nervous systems. PNETs must be distinguished from other round-cell tumors, including Ewing's sarcoma, lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and small cell carcinoma. Intraspinal PNETs are rare neoplasms that are usually metastatic in origin. We describe the eighth reported primary PNET of the cauda equina that developed i

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of the skull and meninges in infancy.

Three cases of melanotic neuroectodermal tumors of infancy are presented. Two were localized on the midline, involving the skull and extending subdurally. One was located on the inner aspect of the dura and developed intracranially. Two had a benign course following gross total removal. One had a malignant course, recurring locally and spreading within the brain. The difficulties of removing these tumors when they are implanted on the midline are stressed. Histological features of prognostic value are pointed out. Further support for neural crest origin of these tumors is given.

Malignant peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the uterus.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PPNET) is rare, occurring most often in young adults. Approximately 50 cases have been reported, with only four cases involving the female genital tract. We report the fifth patient. The term "PPNET" should be used only for tumors with neuroectodermal elements exclusively that occur at sites outside the central and sympathetic nervous system. The pathologic differential diagnoses include rhabdomyosarcoma, immature malignant teratoma, small cell carcinoma of the cervix, and ganglioneuroma. Therapy for this tumor has varied, and no effective regimen ha

Malignant Gastrointestinal Neuroectodermal Tumors: Challenging Tumors With Diverse Morphology and Different Considerations for Differential Diagnosis.

Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumors (MGNET) are extremely rare malignant mesenchymal tumors derived from ectodermal neural cells of the gastrointestinal tract that most commonly arise in the small intestine. Preoperative diagnosis is challenging owing to the lack of well-established imaging characteristics. However, MGNET exhibits distinctive histopathological features, immunohistochemical profiles, molecular genetic characteristics, and ultrastructural manifestations under electron microscopy. Due to its aggressive clinical course, early diagnosis and intervention are crucial fo

Rare Presentation of Supratentorial Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors Mimicking Bifocal Germ Cell Tumors: 2 Case Reports.

Bifocal pineal and suprasellar tumors have only been described in the context of germ cell tumors in the pediatric age group. We report 2 patients with radiologic findings of bifocal pineal and suprasellar lesions, with a histologic diagnosis of supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor. The absence of diabetes insipidus and other endocrine abnormalities was noteworthy in both cases. This observation challenges previous reports on the pathognomonic value of this clinico-radiologic entity.

Gangliosides with O-acetylated sialic acids in tumors of neuroectodermal origin.

Gangliosides, carrying an O-acetylated sialic acid in their carbohydrate moiety, are often found in growing and developing tissues, especially of neuro-ectodermal origin. The most prominent one is 9-O-Ac-GD3, which is considered as an oncofetal marker in animal and human tumors like neuronal tumors, melanoma, basalioma or breast cancer, as well as in psoriatic lesions. Also other gangliosides like GD2 or GT3 were found to be O-acetylated in their terminal sialic acid. In this review we are summarising the occurrence of such gangliosides in normal and transformed tissues and delineate a more ge

Isochromosome 17q in primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the central nervous system.

We have prepared karyotypes from 22 primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) from pediatric patients ranging in age from 10 months to 16 years. Twenty-one cases were newly diagnosed, primary, posterior fossa tumors. One case was a recurrent tumor in a patient previously treated with radiation. Cytogenetic results were obtained from direct preparations and/or short-term (1-10 day) culture. Three tumors had apparently normal karyotypes. Nineteen tumors demonstrated numerical and/or structural abnormalities. The most frequent structural chromosomal changes were deletions and nonreciprocal translo

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors: a Canadian pediatric brain tumor consortium report.

INTRODUCTION: Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (SPNET) are rare tumors accounting for only 2.5% of childhood brain tumors. The purpose of this study was to describe the range of treatment regimens used to treat pediatric SPNET in Canada and to identify prognostic factors for overall survival in this population. METHODS: This study was a retrospective clinical analysis of SPNET patients treated over the last 10 years in Canada. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to all institutions in Canada who treat pediatric patients. Data were collected for patients <19 years of a

Primary neuroectodermal tumors of the ovary. A report of 25 cases.

Twenty-five primary ovarian neuroectodermal tumors occurred in females from 6 to 69 (average, 23) years of age; they had the usual presenting symptoms of abdominal swelling or pain. The tumors, which varied from cystic to solid, ranged from 4 to 20 cm (average, 14 cm) in diameter. Microscopic examination revealed three histologic categories--differentiated, primitive, and anaplastic--with the tumors in the first group having a better prognosis than those in the other two groups. Five of the six differentiated gliomas were pure ependymomas, and one was an ependymoma with an astrocytoma componen
