Review of EEG-based neurofeedback as a therapeutic intervention to treat depression.

Depression, or major depressive disorder, is a common mental disorder that affects individuals' behavior, mood, and physical health, and its prevalence has increased during the lockdowns implemented to curb the COVID-19 pandemic. There is an urgent need to update the treatment recommendations for mental disorders during such crises. Conventional interventions to treat depression include long-term pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Electroencephalogram-neurofeedback (EEG-NF) training has been suggested as a non-invasive option to treat depression with minimal side effects. In thi

Infra-low frequency neurofeedback and insomnia as a model of CNS dysregulation.

This paper will review what is conventionally known of sleep homeostasis and focus on insomnia as a primary manifestation of brain dysregulation, whether as a solitary symptom or as part of a larger syndrome such as post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD. It will discuss in brief behavioral/mindfulness treatments that have been used to treat neurologic diseases, as this is germane to the phenomenology of neurofeedback (NF). It will explore how neurofeedback may work at the subconscious level and cover the current clinical experience of the effectiveness of this technique in the treatment of inso

For Which Children with ADHD is TBR Neurofeedback Effective? Comorbidity as a Moderator.

We examined psychiatric comorbidities moderation of a 2-site double-blind randomized clinical trial of theta/beta-ratio (TBR) neurofeedback (NF) for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Seven-to-ten-year-olds with ADHD received either NF (n = 84) or Control (n = 58) for 38 treatments. Outcome was change in parent-/teacher-rated inattention from baseline to end-of-treatment (acute effect), and 13-month-follow-up. Seventy percent had at least one comorbidity: oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) (50%), specific phobias (27%), generalized anxiety (23%), separation anxiety (16%). Comorb

Electrical fingerprint of the amygdala guides neurofeedback training for stress resilience.

Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) has revived the translational perspective of neurofeedback (NF)1. Particularly for stress management, targeting deeply located limbic areas involved in stress processing2 has paved new paths for brain-guided interventions. However, the high cost and immobility of fMRI constitute a challenging drawback for the scalability (accessibility and cost-effectiveness) of the approach, particularly for clinical purposes3. The current study aimed to overcome the limited applicability of rt-fMRI by using an electroencephalography (EEG) model endowe

Towards Network-Based Neurofeedback of Visual Areas to Enhance Visual Perception.

α-band-mediated brain network communication underlies visual processing and is disrupted in visual deficits. We aimed to develop and evaluate an EEG-based neurofeedback targeting α-band connectivity of source-reconstructed visual areas with the rest of the brain, to determine whether modulating this network enhances detection of low-contrast visual stimuli. In this randomized, active-controlled study, 28 participants received real-time auditory neurofeedback designed to increase global α-band connectivity between target regions and the rest of the brain. Feedback targeted interactions with the

Modulating complex brain states using MVPA-based neurofeedback: A systematic review.

Multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA)-based fMRI neurofeedback is a promising tool for modulating brain states and influencing cognition and behaviour, yet its effectiveness remains unclear. This systematic review investigates its efficacy across emotion regulation, fear conditioning, associative and perceptual learning, attention, craving, semantic neurofeedback and motor rehabilitation, incorporating a meta-analytic synthesis of neural effects. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, IEEE, and DPBL databases identified 29 studies. Published studies exhibit considerable variability in pr

Successful Single-Session Neural Self-Regulation Through Neurofeedback Varies Between Features.

Neurofeedback (NFB) and Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) research seldom present within-session individual learning dynamics. This is even though a large proportion of NFB and BCI users cannot learn the neural self-regulation required to control the feedback. Understanding the time course and learning dynamics between subjects will enable us to design more effective NFB and BCI protocols that promote the learning of neural self-regulation. In this study, we aimed to analyze individual learning trajectories of self-regulation of four different cortical rhythms, in terms of both frequency and spat

Neural Mechanisms of Feedback Processing and Regulation Recalibration During Neurofeedback Training.

The acquisition of new skills is facilitated by providing individuals with feedback that reflects their performance. This process creates a closed loop that involves feedback processing and regulation recalibration to promote effective training. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based neurofeedback is unique in applying this principle by delivering direct feedback on the self-regulation of brain activity. Understanding how feedback-driven learning occurs requires examining how feedback is evaluated and how regulation adjusts in response to feedback signals. In this pre-registered me

Slow Cortical Potential Neurofeedback in Chronic Tinnitus Therapy: A Case Report.

This study is the first to demonstrate outcomes of slow cortical potential (SCP) Neurofeedback training in chronic tinnitus. A 50-year old male patient with tinnitus participated in three SCP training blocks, separated with 1-month breaks. After the training the patient reported decreased tinnitus loudness and pitch, as well as improved quality of daily life. A quantitative electroencephalography analysis revealed close to normal changes of resting state bioelectrical activity in cortical areas considered to be involved in tinnitus generation. The present case study indicates that SCP Neurofee

Voluntary enhancement of neural signatures of affiliative emotion using FMRI neurofeedback.

In Ridley Scott's film "Blade Runner", empathy-detection devices are employed to measure affiliative emotions. Despite recent neurocomputational advances, it is unknown whether brain signatures of affiliative emotions, such as tenderness/affection, can be decoded and voluntarily modulated. Here, we employed multivariate voxel pattern analysis and real-time fMRI to address this question. We found that participants were able to use visual feedback based on decoded fMRI patterns as a neurofeedback signal to increase brain activation characteristic of tenderness/affection relative to pride, an equ

The Lack of Neurofeedback Training Regulation Guidance and Process Evaluation May be a Source of Controversy in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder-Neurofeedback Research: A Systematic Review and Statistical Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Neurofeedback (NF) based on brain-computer interface (BCI) is an important direction in adjunctive interventions for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, existing research lacks comprehensive methodologies and experimental designs. There are concerns in the field regarding the effectiveness and mechanistic interpretability of NF, prompting this study to conduct a systematic analysis of primary NF techniques and research outcomes in PTSD modulation. The study aims to explore reasons behind these concerns and propose directions for addressing them. METHODS: A search condu

Volitional modulation of beta-band EMG coherence through frequency-specific neurofeedback.

Electromyography (EMG) feedback, which records and visually presents muscle activity, has been widely employed to enhance motor control and support rehabilitation. While its effectiveness has been demonstrated across various conditions, most EMG feedback protocols have focused on modulating activity in individual muscles, with limited emphasis on promoting coordinated neuromuscular control. This study investigated the feasibility of enhancing neuromuscular coordination through feedback training designed to increase beta band (15-35 Hz) intramuscular coherence. Twenty-two healthy participants w

Spontaneous Modulation of Alpha Power During a Neurofeedback Session Without Instructions.

Electroencephalographic neurofeedback (EEG-NF) enables individuals to self-regulate specific EEG features with real-time sensory feedback. Despite clinical and cognitive-enhancement applications, the mechanisms underlying the EEG modulation remain poorly understood. Particularly, alpha activity (8-12 Hz) upregulation may occur independently of the participants' volitional control. We previously reported spontaneous increases in alpha power during a passive neurofeedback-like task using pre-recorded EEG feedback. In the present study, we replicated this protocol while implementing an EEG-NF pro

Task-Based EEG Neurofeedback Enhances Training Effects in Dynamic Visual Search.

Dynamic visual search is essential for efficient performance in high-demand perceptual and operational environments. However, effectively improving such a higher-order cognitive ability remains challenging. Although conventional training approaches based on repeated practice can enhance visual search performance, their effectiveness tends to reach a ceiling, thereby constraining further development. To address this limitation, the present study developed a task-based EEG neurofeedback (NF) paradigm by integrating parietal beta upregulation training into the moving object discrimination (MOD) p

Neurofeedback and Brain-Computer Interface-Based Methods for Post-stroke Rehabilitation.

Stroke has been identified as a major public health concern and one of the leading causes contributing to long-term neurological disability. People suffering from stroke often present with upper limb paralysis impacting their quality of life and ability to work. Motor impairments in the upper limb represent the most prevalent symptoms in stroke sufferers. There is a need to develop novel intervention strategies that can be used as stand-alone techniques or combined with current gold standard post-stroke rehabilitation procedures. There was reported evidence about the utility of rehabilitation

Improving interference control without conflict exposure: prefrontal fNIRS-decoded neurofeedback training.

SIGNIFICANCE: Traditional exposure therapy or cognitive training requires repeated presentation of unwanted stimuli, whereas localizationist neuromodulation overlooks individual variation. We propose a closed-loop neuromodulation approach termed functional near-infrared spectroscopy-decoded neurofeedback training, designed to modify prefrontal hemoglobin dynamics and neural activity patterns. AIM: We aim to enhance interference control without interfering stimuli using a data-driven, individualized, time-resolved decoded neurofeedback, potentially offering a balanced compromise and an alterna

A Novel Approach to Improve SSVEP-BCI Performance Through Neurofeedback Training.

Brain-Computer interface (BCI), which translates neural activities into commands for external devices, holds significant promise for clinical rehabilitation and assisted movement for individuals with motor disabilities. Among various BCI paradigms, the steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based BCI garnered considerable attention due to its relatively stable and high-speed communication capabilities. However, a notable portion of the population, referred to as BCI illiteracy, struggles to effectively control BCI systems due to their inability to generate or modulate the neural patterns
